UC researchers find new anti-mosquito weapon

I found this inspirational list on MamaVision’s blog
Found this list on Facebook written by Sarah and wanted to share. This just struck me as a really cool idea…add thoughts as they come about and read through them to reinforce positive reality. See list in process here

-Move forward eagerly, while embracing the now.

-I am free to choose to live as I wish and to give priority to my desires.

-Remember that your body only is not you. The sum of who you are is more important than your body.

-I’ll definitely remember who Stephen Hawking is – but not who won Miss Universe’s last contest.

-I am thankful for all the parts of my body that function correctly

-I appreciate all the movements that my body let me perform

-I am thankful for being able to touch, see, smell, hear and taste

-“I don’t ask for more: the sky above me and the path under my feet.”Robert Louis Stevenson

-Our physical body is a key part of our existence.

-I listen to my intuition.

She’s a marathon runner (on and off mostly since she’s in school now) and usually runs San Diego’s Rock n Roll Marathon, but couldn’t this year due to school. And we were saying how we should get my dad to run it next year since he’s lost like 15 pounds now since he stopped drinking. Then I said I would run it, the half marathon at least. And at first I was just kinda joking around and saying it, but now I think I should really stick with this goal. I want to start training and maybe I could actually run/walk the half marathon next year. I’m gonna have to really train though because right now I can only run/walk like half a mile to a mile, and a half marathon is 13.1 miles. But I have until next summer. So I’m going to try my hardest to get there! If any of you are training for races or marathons, tips would be very much appreciated on how to get started training and where I should be running wise at certain points in the year I have to train.

Help?

Today was the first day of my new, and hopefully permanent, lifestyle change. Well, almost. I’ve already been working on eating healthier, but I haven’t been as committed to exercise. So today, I woke up at 7:30 and got my fitness on!

Goal: Healthy, Happy, Beautiful. I want to be in my best physical condition; I want to have a flat sexy tummy before Micah comes home in approx. 3 months.

HEALTH - Tabloid Sores (Nosaj Thing Rmx)

Being on a low-carb diet means that your protein sources have to be as low in carbs as anything else you eat. If you eat meat, for example, you can only eat it breaded and fried if the breading is low-carb. The same goes for meatloaf, which typically has many more carbs than you would suspect. Not all meat is carb-free by itself, either. Read on to learn how to choose the protein sources you need without the carbs you don’t.

-If you eat meat, most cuts of beef, pork, poultry and lamb have less than a carb per serving. How you cook or prepare them can change that, however. Avoid any kind of liver or any internal organs, like chicken giblets. With the exception of ricotta, cottage cheese and Gjetost (or Brunost, as this brown Norwegian cheese is also called), cheese is also a good low-carb source of protein.

-If you eat fish and seafood, fish has no carbs. Seafood can, however. Oysters, mussles, clams and abalone can have the most. Still, the carb content for a modest serving is low. For example, 3 oz. of cooked Pacific oysters has 8.4 carbs.

-If you do not eat meat, fish, or seafood, try seitan. It has the highest amount of protein of the vegetarian meat substitutes. Plus, it is a good source of iron and has little fat and no cholesterol. You can make seitan at home; but you can also buy it at a natural foods store. Use it as you would beef. You can buy a chicken-flavored seitan, as well. Another good source of protein is tofu.

-Drink soy milk for extra protein. Choose one without sweetening so that you can have the benefits of soy protein without unnecessary carbs.

-Don’t forget to eat your vegetables. They have protein, too. Beans and peas have as much protein as the same amount of tofu. Broccoli and asparagus have half as much protein as the same amount of tofu.

While the Congressional Budget Office has said that only 7 percent of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) will have to switch to subsidized-exchange policies in 2014, a McKinsey survey which included more than 1,300 employers found that about 30 percent of employers will definitely or probably stop offering ESI after 2014, when Affordable Care Act will come into effect. The survey also found that at least 30 percent of employers would gain financially if they did not offer ESI benefits, and more than 85 percent of employees would remain at their jobs even if their employer stopped offering ESI, although about 60 percent would expect increased compensation.

Mosquitoes are responsible for killing about a million people, mostly children, every year. Malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus are just a sampling of the lethal packages the six-legged creatures are capable of delivering.

But researchers at UC Riverside and the National Institutes of Health have identified an odor that can confuse mosquitoes and camouflage their prey. Find out more.

I slept in today, which is unusual for me. I feel really good - partially from working out hard yesterday! I’m going to the gym today, but I’m not sure what I should do… any ideas? I already ran some laps today. :)

How’s everyone’s day going so far? What is everyone doing to be fit today?

I’m planning on starting a Progress Blog where I’ll post pictures and some reviews on my work outs and things I eat and some ongoing measurements and whatnot now that I’m almost ready to start my P90X training.

It’s going to be password protected so my“”half-naked”“ self won’t be at too much of a public-display.

[I will also be posting a link in a few minutes to my new fitness blog]

But it is a FITSPO-type blog, so if you’re interested in getting healthy or toned[like I’m gunning for] or just wanna show me some support [which I will GREATLY appreciate] just send me a message in my ask box and I’ll inbox you the password :)

I start p90x as soon as I can get a pair of resistance bands, just so you know. Which could be as soon as this weekend.

Here’s a link to my ask:http://andtheworldwaswell.tumblr.com/ask

and if you know of anyone that is a fitness blog or that likes following fitness blogs let them know about me, or let me know about them.

Thanks you guys, I love you all :)

Tips to help me not eat off my schedule…

NOTE: I do not intend these to be substitutes for not eating; these are simply things that help me NOT to cheat on my meal plan (eating between breakfast and my AM snack).

  • Paint your nails. If your nails are freshly painted and wet, you’re not going to want to mess them up by eating
  • Brush your teeth. A lot of food tastes gross when you have the minty toothpaste taste in your mouth.
  • Wear lip gloss. If you’ve got something sticky on your lips, you will be super conscious of what you put in your mouth
  • Drink water-it fills up your stomach. However, don’t drink too much at once, because it’s not healthy.
  • Chew on ice cubes. This helps me a lot because my mouth is tricked into thinking that chewing = food, plus you’re getting water.
  • Chew sugarfree gum. Once again, this is a chewing thing, plus it tastes yummy. If it’s mint (peppermint or spearmint-spearmint is my favorite, though) it serves the same purpose as toothpaste
  • Have a cough drop. Once again, these leave a strong taste in your mouth that will turn you off from food. Just make sure you get the sugarfree ones. Also, my dentist told me that sucking on cough drops increases saliva flow in your mouth, which reduces bad breath!

Full of sickness and pain/ trying to erase the stains on my memory/ leaving me to falter through the misery you’ve caused/ see through sickness and health I promised to be there/ but I broke that vow months ago/ only to chase the happiness I had/ leaving the past ills in the past they perpetuated/ ad grew into things unseen/ and some days I just want to spill it all but my pride wont let me/ see my health is just one of my problems/ and to e healthy is a goal/ but to be healthy is to be happy/ and the outside things glisten/ my insides can be dark/ and now it is my time to embark on this journey of life/ to gain happiness & health.

Fast Food + Coffee = Worst Combination for Our Health

I am finally at a stable healthy weight.  I’m proud to say that I look healthy and fit, and work hard at it.  It took a long time to get better… and my body is finally working on my side recently.  Even in sickness there is always the seed of health.  Don’t fight to destroy the sickness, but strengthen the seed.  Nurture it and feed it and keep it well.  It will grow and the sickness will diminish.  The sickness will become the seed that can, but won’t, because the environment doesn’t permit it.

For a week I will be doing a low-carb diet.

Hopefully it gets me to my 1 gw. If not then oh well… I want to be healthy & I’m only willing to do this for a week every once in a while.

If you want me to post my meals for this diet just leave me a message so i know.  :)

I will update my weight as it changes!

Song of the Week

Pelvic Pain

Shop Now!

So, it’s been about a week since I started over.  I actually didn’t start hardcore exercising/’dieting’ until the 5th. And with the exception of chinese takeout last night for dinner, I’ve been doing SO well.

I’m eating right, and my stomach is finally getting over the constantly starving stage that happens you’re not as eating as much as you used to. I’m usually pretty hungry in the late morning, but I have a schedule for eating that helps me stay on track. I get hungry again in the afternoon, but it usually goes away after I exercise. Half the time after a workout I’m not even hungry anymore! (I still eat though… gotta keep the metabolism going and NOT push myself into starvation mode).

I had a REALLY good workout today. I’ve been doing comcast OnDemand ten minute workouts.. one for abs/back and one for legs. So I did that, and 30 minutes of jogging/walking, and 10 minutes of yoga to stretch after my run.

I weighed myself this morning, which I shouldn’t have done, and saw that I’ve gained two pounds. I should not be so hung up by a number on a scale. I should be focusing on how my body is changing. It’s only been 4 days and I’m already noticing changes. I have more muscle definition in my thighs and upper arms… the little flabby bits on my body are getting tighter/disappearing… my slight double chin is much much smaller, and I just feel better in general, until I remember that damn number. I wish I could get over the weight and focus on the good things.

So.. good things. I’m doing awesome at eating, exercising is going well and I think I’m starting to really look forward to pushing myself, it’s nice enough to run outside (which means a tan!!), and my flabby bits are disappearing!

Time keeps on ticking...

As much as I would love to believe it, there is probably no way I lost 2.2 pounds yesterday, because I ate french fries and a lot of other garbage.  I still think I probably did lose weight, but overall, my weight loss has been a little high all around, because I think I’m eating fairly healthy, I haven’t felt sick at all.

Anyways.  I think I might trade that yoga mat in for a scale.  BUT! I do feel skinnier today!

I had forgotten how much I love this dress. Even though one of the straps is broken and janky in the back (just a tiny bit), paired with some nude wedges, I think it should look pretty good. No bra…again…Today will be an excellent day. Fasting. I’m feeling inspirational.

LUNCH!!!

Multiseed deli roll (yes the top half was not in the picture!)

Deli ham, spinach, cucumber.

grapes, strawberries, apple and blueberries :)

Anything is possible

Anything can be.

-Words of Wisdom

I have OCD in regards to numbers. Say for example, i’m on an exercise machine, the calories/kms/time all have to be multiples of 5 (100, 345, 450 etc) before I get off. Same goes for music volume in the car and on the television.

Which is why today, June the 5th, is a perfect day to start. So my healthy eating and regular running starts today. Well when I wake up, considering it’s 1am at the moment. I’ll be eating to fix my iron and allergies and running to fix my weak back.

And incase you were wondering, the goal is perfectly flat and toned abs (24/7).

  • Find Motivation! Surround yourself with people who support healthy eating!
  • Relate exercise with relaxation and stress relief. Music helps immensely, so fill up your iPod with all of your favorites!
  • Go with sugar free or fat free ALMOST always - check labels and compare nutritional content! Just because it says *FAT FREE!* or has other healthy words on the packaging doesn’t always mean it’s better for you.
  • MOST of your daily carbs and calories should come from fruits and vegetables.
  • Protein Source: egg whites and white fish (Absolutely no red meat.)
  • When cooking with oil, try to “keep it fresh, keep it clean” as much as possible, but remember both olive oil and coconut oil are proven weight loss aides in addition to other great health benefits!
  • Stay within 1000 to 1200 calories per day and also shift your intake amount from day to day, too, to keep your body guessing. Use a weight loss calculator online to figure out how many calories you need to consume per day and subtract 550 calories. Sparkspeople, caloriecount, bodybuilding.com are great tools.
  • To help with bloating, don’t exceed 800mg of sodium a day.
  • Stick with skim milk or unsweetened Almond Breeze.
  • Alternate Greek yogurt with traditional yogurt to receive the maximal calcium and protein benefits from this extraordinary nutritional source.
  • Stay away from dried fruits and remember that sometimes even starchy vegetables can wreck a diet.
  • Following a balanced diet high in fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein might leave room for some cheese depending on your weight loss goals and any existing health conditions, but generally try to steer clear of it.
  • ALWAYS eat breakfast and make it the largest meal of the day. “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.” Think about it.  Why would you need a huge meal at the end of the day when you’re getting ready to relax and go to bed?  You need energy at the beginning of the day.
  • Stay busy! Keep your mind occupied all day. Be productive. You’ll spend less time wondering what else there is to eat and ultimately burn more calories anyway.
  • To stay full throughout the day by drinking lots of water, plus black coffee and tea. Don’t ever drink your calories, unless you are doing a meal replacement or something.
  • NO FAST FOOD! None. There is no such thing as healthy fast food - even the lighter choices have so many preservatives it’s just not worth it.
  • Hold the sauce and skip the salt - condiments, creamers, etc.. the secret calories they add sneak up on you quicker than you may realize.
  • When grocery shopping, if it comes from a box it should probably stay there.
  • Tip: When you are having a horrible sweet tooth and you feel like you are going to binge try “Nestle fat free hot coco” its only 20 calories.
  • Another tip: Keep Sugar free Gum with you at all times.
  • ALWAYS track what you put in your mouth, you’ll be surprised what foods are preventing you from losing weight.
  • Shooting for a loss of 20lbs at a time is a great way to get discouraged.  Baby steps.  Aim for a pound or two at a time and just take it a week at a time.  And then keep at it.
  • Weigh yourself every other day, not 50 times a day.
  • Don’t deprive yourself give your self a treat once a week (whether its your favorite candy bar or a slice of pizza this might even cause you to lose more weight because you will be giving your metabolism something new to break down causing it to work harder and faster. BUT if you are going to eat something bad make sure it stays within your calorie intake for that day!
  • If it’s past 6pm or you have already reached your calorie count for the day and you are absolutely hungry, safe foods to have during those times would be 2 cups of Original Air popped pop corn or any of the following: Strawberries, Cucumber, Green Beans, Celery, Sugar Free/Fat Free Jello, Lettuce, Green Pepper, Blueberries, Radishes, Broccoli, Egg whites.

Next time you feel the urge to binge remember to binge on SMART food. These are all negative calorie foods:

apples ~ apricots ~ artichokes ~ asparagus ~ beet greens ~ beets ~ blackberries ~ blueberries ~ broccoli ~ Brussels sprouts ~ buffalo fish ~ cabbage ~ cantaloupe ~ carrots ~ cauliflower  ~ Chinese cabbage ~ chives ~ clams ~ cod ~ cranberries ~ cucumbers ~  Damson plum ~ dandelion greens ~ eggplant ~ endive ~flounder ~ frogs legs ~ garlic ~ grapefruit ~ grapes ~ green beans ~ honeydew ~  lemons ~ lettuce ~ limes ~ loganberries ~ mangoes ~ mushrooms ~ muskmelons ~ mussels ~ mustard greens ~ nectarines ~ okra ~ onions ~ oranges  ~ parsley leaves ~ parsnips ~ peaches ~ pears ~ peas ~ peppers ~ pineapple ~ pomegranates ~ prunes ~ pumpkin ~ quince ~ radishes ~ raspberries ~ red cabbage ~ rhubarb ~ rutabagas ~ spinach ~ squash ~ strawberries ~ string beans ~ tangerines ~ terrapin ~ tomato ~ turnips ~ watercress ~ watermelon

*Disclaimer: Original text by undressedskeleton - edited a bit by me because there were a couple of things I just didn’t agree with.

i ate like a shit tonnnnn. hahaha

I can’t believe the first week of the summer semester is over already.  So far, my classes aren’t so bad and have been really fun.  My math class is kind of odd as the instructor reminds me of Prof. Trelawney from Harry Potter.  It’s all ok though.  I only have three more weeks in that class before I’m done with math.  Which is good.  I don’t think I could stand to take this particular course in a 16 week semester.

On the subject of school, I found an interesting article this morning.  It lists the top grossing majors and the lowest money makers.  I’m ok with the thought of not making a ton of cash as long as I do something I love, but it is still intriguing to see where the “real” money is made.  You can find the article HERE.

Completely off the topic of school, I’m down another 2 pounds!  I’ve lost nearly 60 pounds from my heaviest and can’t wait to see the finished product when I get down to my ultimate goal!  If you are heavy and want to lose weight but don’t think you can, just remember that the only person holding you back is yourself.  I had to get out of my own way before this change and I couldn’t be happier about it.  Next to going back to school, dropping my fat card is the best decision I’ve ever made!

The Simpsons on Your Conscience

On 11/6/11..my maid fell from steelless stain strais.Just in my head i know i’ll be the one who in charge to cook,to clean everything at the kitchen. But i like doing this work. Dishes, cook, clean all the table and everything as people know.To me it’s also an exercise, since i’m a diabetic.I prefer doing things like this than jogging.

The reason why is cause i feel tired fast than normal people does..so it’s no problem to me to do something healthy for myself,by doing this work. Moreover i faced a serious problem with myself..like eating disorder, bulimia and pre-anorexia (i call this cause ever face it nearly a month!).My body just like a stick..from my friends and family viewed. But i never think like that.

So..i don’t mind what work that involve sweating,i’ll be doing it with happy feeling, work hard feeling..haha.And it’s also for myself,my diabetes.Well, replacing my maid position is not bad at all,right..? I love it ;)

Stop in here for while..healthy thing..my sleeping time still worst!

Practicing forearm stands in my hallway before I go to the gym.

I know I don’t look like some of the pictures I post, but I’m a work in progress, and I’m pretty happy with how things are going!

last night i ran 3 miles and walked 1 mile.  it felt good! my local trail kinda sucks because it’s so hilly.  but i guess it’ll only help me for xc!

i’m putting an honest effort into trying to eat healthier.  i’ve been trying to add whole grains and fruits and veggies where i can and avoiding processed foods and sodas.  plus eating in moderation; i tend to over eat…

i have the thinnest arms, so i really want to work on upper-body strength.  i’ll do that along with some more plyo.

  • 15 push-ups
  • 2 x 25 sit-ups
  • 3 x my plyo routine
  • weights… (i need to get some heavier ones!)

I’ve always been the chubby kid.

Growing up I had to get clothes in the “husky” section.

I never liked sports or sweating for that matter.

Although I’m heavy, I really don’t eat terribly… I tend to eat very healthy, I don’t binge or over-indulge. I hate chocolate and don’t have sweets or junk food in my house.

I think most of my weight issues stem from the fact that I live a very sedentary life. I work in front of a computer 8-10 hours per day. Even though I don’t own a car most of my life revolves around a small 4-5 mile radius of downtown Chicago that I usually bus, train, or taxi around. I’ll walk if it’s not too far.

I’ve had gym memberships. My first was when I was 22 or 23. It took me about a year to work up the courage to go and join but I finally did it. I went in, took the tour, signed the contract, and got my membership card. A year later I had spent about $700 for a membership I never used once.

Every once in awhile I dieted. I did South Beach for awhile. Then there was the time I only ate chicken and potatoes. Thankfully, the idea of Jenny Craig or Nutri-System never seemed to pique my interest.

I moved to Chicago in 2007 and decided it was time to get serious. So, I joined another gym. This membership did get some moderate use. I signed up for some personal training sessions and met a great trainer. I saw some results but quickly the cost of keeping a trainer [and motivation] fizzled.

A year later, I decided to get serious… again. This time, I joined a gym that was less than a block from where I worked and I again hired a trainer. Over the course of a few months I lost about 30 pounds, went down 2 pant sizes, 1 shirt size and began to really feel good about myself and the routine I got myself into. However, some life circumstances cast a shadow over the progress and a few months later I was gaining the weight back.

The following year I did manage to get ANOTHER gym membership. This gym was embarrassingly close to my house, like less than 500 feet. However, my low sense of self-esteem and lack of courage and determination only got me to that gym twice. Again, another year’s gym membership down the drain.

Then, in the past year, I’ve made some dramatic changes in my life. I’ve changed jobs, moved to a different neighborhood, having a much better living situation, and personally I’ve made some choices and decisions that have helped me become a healthier person, emotionally and spiritually.

I knew the only thing missing at this point was my physical health.

Last October I got sick with mono, but it wasn’t just one of those cases that lasts a few weeks and is gone — this one stuck with me. I lost energy, was fatigued, and with the grey and dark winter days grew depressed.

My eating habits started to go downhill… living in the middle of a neighborhood filled with restaurants with fast and convenient delivery, I soon rarely left the house for anything.

Then, in May of this year, I got very sick. I was having persistent fevers and night sweats along with chills. Repeated visits to the doctor and countless tests yielded no results and after a couple of weeks I was admitted to the hospital. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Words like “cancer” and other serious illnesses were being discussed as possible culprits. Thankfully, it was nothing serious… just a bad combo of a viral infection and mono. Other than that, I was given a clean bill of health. My heart, blood pressure, and other vital signs were all normal.

Those few days and that entire experience really got me thinking about my life and my health.

For the greater part of my life I’ve been overweight and unhappy with myself. I’ve lacked the confidence and will-power to do something to change it. I’ve had moments where there’s been a spark of motivation but it’s quickly faded. I’ve taken some steps to better myself but they’ve not led anywhere.

And here I sit, 28 years old and nearing my last year of my 20s. I’ve had an experience that almost made me think my life was over… [I literally wrote an “if anything happens to me…” email] and now I know it’s not. I’ve been given another chance and an opportunity to do something.

So I’m going to.

My goal is to spend these last days of 28 preparing to live the last year of my 20s in good health, in good shape, and to be a healthier, happy person. I want to lose weight but more than that, gain confidence and the willpower to be active and be healthy.

Being raised in a Christian home I know that our bodies are a gift and a dwelling place of God’s Spirit. I want to take care of mine and be the best I can be, stewarding the gift God has given me of good health.

So, the day after being discharged from the hospital I knew I needed to make some changes and thus, this journey began.

After being discharged from the hospital, I knew I needed to make some dramatic changes in my life for the betterment of myself and my health. I knew a diet wouldn’t work. This needed to be a lifestyle change.

I spent most of my first day home reading articles online about weight loss, getting fit, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I decided I needed to make commitments to myself and so I wrote up my health commitments. I posted a copy of these on my refrigerator and keep a copy in my wallet. I read and review them nearly every day as a reminder to myself of the changes I’m committing to embrace.

Here they are…

1 - Eat 3 healthy meals per day no later than 7:30 PM.

  • I never eat breakfast, which I know is terrible. So this commitment was huge to get me in the habit of eating 3 meals per day.
  • Living a chaotic life in the city, my dinnertime hours can range anywhere from 7-9:30 PM. That has to change. I need not eat big meals so late and so close to bedtime. This one will be hard but necessary.

2 - Eat healthy foods and maintain and online food journal.

  • I’ve made a commitment to not eat any processed foods or foods with white flour, sugar, or any starches.
  • I want to mainly eat fresh [and if available, organic] fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.
  • Keeping an online journal, for me, has been very helpful. I love MyFoodDiary.com.

3 - Drink at least 64 oz of water per day.

  • Most days I would drink very little water. I’d start the day with Starbucks, have a diet Coke at lunch, and maybe have water before dinner while waiting for a diet Coke or cocktail to arrive.
  • Now, I’m committing to becoming a water-drinking fool. No sports drinks, very little coffee, and if I need a boost drinking green tea.
  • I got a Camelback water bottle and LOVE it.

4 - Limit going out to eat and alcohol consumption.

  • This is huge for me. Most of my meals up to this point have been from eating out. Chiptole [which isn’t awful for you if you make the right decisions], Chinese take-out, you name it. I never cooked at home. That has to chane.
  • If I go out, I will commit to trying to keeping that for the weekends only and will commit to making the healthiest decisions possible.
  • Alcohol-wise, I want to avoid it altogether for the first 90 days of this process. After that [or if I break down between now and then], I only want to drink on weekends and keep it to lite beers and cocktails like vodka sodas. No dark beers or sugary cocktails.

5 - Exercise at least 1 hour per day, 6 times per week.

  • Again, a big commitment.
  • I do have a gym membership now but without a trainer I only feel equipped enough to do cardio. But, I know if I want to lose weight I need to build muscle. Muscle burns fat.
  • After seeing the informercials and seeing some of my friends’ crazy results, I’ve purchased the Power90 in-home training program. It’s the step below P90X for beginners. I’m committing to doing the program for the next 90 days.
  • In addition to focused exercise, since it’s summer, I will commit to walking as much as possible to the various destinations that are a part of my weekly routine, trying to limit the amount of public transportation and taxis I take.

6 - Get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

  • Admittedly, I’m a night owl and with distractions like technology and Netflix, I’m often prone to having a very late bedtime. That has to change. I know that in order to lose weight you need to get adequate amounts of sleep.
  • So, my goal is to be in bed by 10:30 PM on weekdays and 12 AM on weekends, giving myself at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

7 - Give myself one “free day” per week.

  • With all of these dramatic changes, I know I’ll need a break.
  • I’m going to commit to having one free day per week where I cut loose and don’t freak out over what food I eat.
  • I won’t go buck wild but I will treat myself appropriately trying to make healthy choice and decisions.

I’m choosing to make these commitments to myself so I can reach my goal weight by my 29th birthday, November 25, and live the last year of my 20s as the healthiest year of my life so far.

Month 2, Day 1

trying to get out of the 260’s has been the hardest part of this journey so far.  I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong.  maybe i’m not paying attention to my meals as much, or maybe my exercise routine is becoming stale and my body is getting bored, or even i’ve just been doing to many toning things, cause i feel like i lost more weight but there is a good chance it could all be muscle building.  I can’t wait for my birthday when i FINALLY get Zumba for the Wii! i need to shake it up a bit and attack my belly fat cause it’s basically the main problem for me.  although i only lost another 2 pounds this week i have officially lost overall 33LBS!!!! and that i am happy about. I’m staying strong though, i have no real reason to stop and waist all this work. I just need more advice and determination.

If any of you have any tips or have hit the same part in everything i have lemme know give some tips i’m open to any thing!

I was 6 days into my diet, and I caved and cheated in the best way I could have cheated. There was a ton of re-make’s and leftover pizza’s at work, and my shrimp and asparagus didn’t get me as full as I had hoped, so I ate, and ate, and ate pizza until I thought I would die. I didn’t feel any guilt, or disappointment because I know that I’m only HUMAN. Besides, who the fuck was I kidding when saying that I wasn’t going to have any of my Mom’s barbecue?! Hahaha! Now that the family gathering is behind me, and the new week has begun, I know that I need to get back on track and really put my best foot forward in hopes of losing more weight and getting healthy.

I drink about 7 cups of soda a day. And no water. Maybe some juice if I’m feeling frisky. But mostly soda.

I’ve also been snacking a lot at work.

This has led to a 9 lb weight gain after an overall 32 lb loss over a year.

So for the last TWO DAYS I cut back on snacking and drank between 2-4 bottles of water and no soda.

I’ve lost 5 lbs.

For your daily dose of “things that make Athena really angry”.

I woke up this morning pretty sure I was finally going to drop below 123.0, but the food baby from last night (the Giant-est Salad In The World) means I was actually 124 instead :(

And do you know when this plateau started?  When I started chew/spitting again.  I really should give it up, but it’s just so hard to do.

I’m supposed to get my period on either Thursday night or Friday morning which means I’m going to be gaining weight which means I need to workout harder

Wow. 4:30 in the morning and Aaron is definitely not going back to sleep. Outside the birds are just waking up. A lonely car makes the short down our one way street. My husband comes back to bed from the couch where he retreated around 1, or was it 2:00, when Aaron wouldn’t go to sleep the third time. “I’m going to sleep for another ½ an hour” he tells me. “Okay.” I scoop Aaron up. In the kitchen we make a quick bottle and then head into the living room where there is just enough space for two to work out with relative comfort. This morning I’m on my own. I turn on the tv and the PS3 we bought mostly for the Bluray features. It’s the thrum that gets me. The Beachbody, bad music, could be a porn but it’s not, that sets my blood pounding.

Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps is pretty crazy. Not because the exercises are nuts or the reps are out there, but just for sheer body fatigue. It makes me work. And sweat. And you know? I kind of like it. Aaron sits on his play mat (he’s not crawling yet, but he’s moving. He’s at a point where, even though he’s not crawling, if he wants something, he can get halfway across the room to get your phone)! He laughs at me through most of the work out. There are some exercises (like tri extensions) where he’s looking at me wide eyed and I can hear the thoughts “Really Mom? Really? That?” It’s pretty great to have an audience, even one who can’t talk. And when I fall doing push ups that require me to clap … and I fall … well, maybe I’m glad my audience can’t speak yet!

Then there’s Ab Ripper X. I get through ALL of the exercises except for Mason twists, Oblique, and Leg Grabbers, at 100%. And when I’m done I’m feeling it. This, on top of the 5k this weekend – I’m feeling it – but I’m feeling GOOD.

It’s six in the morning, I’ve worked out, and I’m ready to take on the day. Bring it, Bring it … On to diapers and work and clients and school. On to finding out what the rest of the world holds. Taking all of that on seems so much easier once I know I can take on all of this.

Hope your Monday is going well. And hey – if you want to join me, or you’re interested in trying anything out, just let me know. I’m happy to answer questions or get you a sample of Shakeology, or whatever I can do. I know I feel great – I want you to as well.

 Thanks for reading!

Comparing MyPlate to farm subsidies
If the USDA says that vegetables and fruits should make up half of our diets, why does less than 1 percent of its food subsidies go to farmers who grow produce?

Drink 1/8 lemon and water every morning.

Why? Drinking lemon water helps you maintain a higher metabolism, fights hunger cravings, helps you lose weight faster and boosts your immune system, to name just a few benefits!

PS. It is recommended to drink the lemon water hot.

A Deficiency of Vitamins Can Actually Have Serious Health Consequences.: Symptoms of deficiency of...

My last name happens to be Popp, so you’d think I would drink alot of that carmel colored goodness that lurks in every vending machine, and food joint across America.  I do drink pop (or soda for some of you folks), I enjoy it from time to time but its has become more of a “reward” than being a regular staple in my diet.  Soft-drinks have been under much scrutiny over the last few years by many health officials because these drinks are seen as excess calories, especially amongst kids.  Really, they are.  Most sugar sweetened beverages contain around 150 kcals per serving, and if consumed in excess over an entire year can lead to around 10-12 lbs of weight gain just from these drinks alone!

In a recent study in adult males, the consumption of sugar-sweetened (or non-diet) beverages was highly correlated with an increased risk for the development of type-2 diabetes.  Type-2 diabetes is a very serious disease, and one that is preventable!  Type-2 diabetes results in your body pretty much becoming insulin resistant, that is to say that the insulin you produced has NO EFFECT on lowering your blood sugar levels (insulin is released after a meal to decrease your blood glucose levels).  The result: you have very high glucose levels that can lead to a whole cohort of issues.

So, sugar-sweetened beverages are correlated with risk for developing type-2 diabetes, anything else?  Yes, the study also found an inverse relationship between coffee drinkers and type-2 diabetes.  Coffee is low in sugar so it would make sense that they are inversely related.  They also found that artificially sweetened drinks—those lower in calories and sugar—were not associated with an increase risk for type 2 diabetes.  This would also make sense because a lower sugar, lower calorie drink would not have that great of an effect on insulin secretion, similar to coffee. But, they happened to analyze another group of studies on beverage consumption and type-2 diabetes.  These studies found a positive correlation with artificially sweetened drinks and diabetes (opposite of what this study found).  They mentioned that artificially sweetened drinks might actually stimulate individuals to increase consumption of sweet foods at subsequent meals, but this was seen more as an idea rather than something that was proven true in the study.  I mention this because it raises an interesting thought.  Have you ever had a bite of a cookie, or ice cream and immediately wanted more?  I am sure you have, we all have.  Its so hard to put sweet foods down!  The observation that artificially sweetened drinks stimulates an increase in the consumption of sweet foods plays off this idea—we want more of a good thing!  Sweet foods have found to stimulate the pleasure center in the brain, sugar increases a hormone called dopamine—the pleasure hormone (Sex, and some drugs (like cocaine) also stimulate dopamine).

This study was interesting because it raised some intriguing points.  The sample population was limited (white, adult males), which does not represent the entire population as a whole.  But, it can provide some information between increased consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, and possibly even artificially sweetened beverages, and there role in the development of a preventable disease.

Try and cut back on the ever-so sugar sweet beverages—they’re not so sweet on your waistline!  And personally, I think these drinks are okay but in moderation. Consume diet, tea, coffee, favored water or any zero-calorie drinks if you can.

This post is going to be about the long road it took for me to get proper care, care I only started receiving last year.

For most people with bipolar disorder it can take up to ten years. One in four are lucky enough to get it in less than three.

According to Dr Wes Burgess in his Bipolar Handbook: “A recent study showed that almost 70% of bipolar patients had been misdiagnosed more than 3 times before receiving their correct diagnosis”.

I was misdiagnosed three times. Depression. Anxiety. Hormonal imblance. Voodoo Curse.

It took me three years to get a correct diagnosis.

It took me three more years to get treatment for it.

I’m going to refrain from making this entry really triggering because honestly I think that anyone who has fought with this kind of bullshit could find some help in reading this. That if you’ve stopped and given up you need to look and go “Damn, maybe I should try again.”

Keep going and don’t stop, because even if you get proper treatment you will be burdened from shit from all sides. It’s not just mental illness it’s for anyone who has suffered from a chronic lifelong disease.

This is just my personal experience and I just hope it echoes among some people. I have been worse off than some, much much more fortunate than most.

When I look back to when I was a child I can remember early niggling signs that something was wrong.

I thought about things too hard. Wondered if people didn’t like me. Little moments were blown up, VERY, little moments. I focused on them and I got angry and then I got overwhelmed and I cried. I cried a lot. I was put out in the hall for crying.

I was asked by teachers “Why” was I crying.

The answer is the same as it was then: “I don’t know.”

I learned to get some grip on it. I would pull myself away from the situation if I could. Choke back tears in the hallway or bathroom. Move on.

I learned that crying was bad because it made other people uncomfortable. While some can solve this emotional issue by warming up, making the crying stop through gentle words, soft gestures- I was not lucky enough to have these people as my parents.

I was punished for crying. Screamed at to stop. Why was I crying. WHY?

They did not see the emotions whirriing in my head they did not see the negative thoughts repeat themselves at a mile a minute. They did not see my mind become an ouroboros of self destructive thoughts.

It was just me. Crying.

It got worse through puberty. Other symptoms reared their ugly head. I don’t think I’m ever going to talk about some of the stuff that happened then.

One day I found myself in a counselers office, sobbing almost uncontrolably. Trying to calm myself while the woman on the other side stared at me wide eyed, my panic causing HER to panic. She called my mom and told her “YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO GO TO THERAPY.” The way she worded it just made it sound like a punishment.

Get this kid outta here! I don’t know what the fuck to do with em! Gettin tears all over the damn place!

I walked home and I cried home and I couldn’t remember what set me off originally or why it even mattered. I was just a bundle of mixed up brain chemistry, my mind sloshing and crackling.

My parents told me, once again, that I was just a very emotional and sensitive child and I shouldn’t listen to that woman I mean my grades were good I don’t need therapy!

My grades were good because I didn’t find High School particularly demanding. To put it in context: My highschool just graduated my brother, who did almost nothing the entire year and had F’s almost all across the board. The fear of graduating High School was almost non existant.

Then there was college. An art school that was 72 hours a week of anxiety.

I did not do well.

My symptoms exploded. It is not uncommon for people in their 20’s to get a real taste of their mental illness, because that is when things start to get really hard. When we get a taste of the amount of responsibility it is to be an adult.

I was diagnosed with depression.

The zoloft they gave me did help with the depression but it sent me spiraling into mania. People liked me more because I was “happy”. I was happy until it dove back into an aggravated mania again. Then I was angry. Then not only was I running over with hate, I had the energy to act on it.

“Jeez what a bitch!”

Then I crashed and became bedridden and sad.

“If only if you weren’t so lazy, if you tried harder.”

Those calm “normal” moments between symptoms were becoming rarer and rarer.

“This is hormonal you know, maybe if you ate right and exercised and took vitamins you would feel better!”

When I was nervous I ate, and I ate a lot. I gained a lot of weight. Sometimes I would stop eating, then I gained more from such inconsistent dietary patterns. Sometimes I didn’t want to leave my bed because of overwhelming depression.

My brain was causing my body to fall apart. It was causing everything to fall apart.

In ‘07 after having such a severe panic attack that my nose bled violently, I decided I wanted to see a therapist.

Six months later.

I saw a therapist.

I was too frightened of the idea that I was a failure, that I was sick, that I was wrong, that I would have to see a “shrink”.

I am lucky to be blessed with a wonderful therapist. A warm, kind, therapist. A therapist who took someone into her office who was crying and shaking and calmed them and offered them options and didn’t react with fear like so many had before. A therapist who will perform sessions over the phone if I am too upset to get out of bed. A therapist who will speak to my parents and explain to them what they are dealing with.

My first psychiatrist?

No.

My first psychiatrist was an oddly cold man who really didn’t care about what I had to say. One who made the same mistakes that many have before and looked at me, my weight, and gave me things that might help my WEIGHT and not my HEAD.

He put me on things that made bipolar people agitated. I told him that I had been diagnosed. Why was he doing this?

I attempted suicide in ‘07.

I was sent to the hospital for three days and the amount it cost was so staggering that I didn’t go back to see my therapist or psychiatrist (nevermind that I didn’t really want to see my psych anyway)

I stayed on the medications that did nothing, in fact they made me worse.

I trundled along. I dealt with it.

Then another bad person came into my life, another awful person that shoved my head into the dirt and used my hardships against me.

“You fucking loser!”

“Good luck making anything of yourself!”

“You’re so fucking lazy!”

I had a psychotic episode.

I finally returned to my warm therapist and she was disturbed to find me in that state and she insisted that I was going to see her every single week until things got stable because if things didn’t I would have to go straight to a hospital or I might die or I might kill.

So I got treatment. She talked me through it. I found a better psychiatrist. A man who specializes in bipolar disorder. He is warm he is kind he genuinely cares about my life. He carefully balances the medications that keep me going.

I don’t know why it has to be so hard to find people like this.

Doctors that aren’t shitty, who care.

I see so many people suffering who have stopped seeking treatment because their doctors didn’t care. Because their doctors spoke down to them. Because the people who should be helping them are just adding to yet another in a list of people who just don’t give a fuck, and would rather blame you for making THEM uncomfortable.

So let me just briefly stop and say that if you have the option to go see someone. PLEASE see someone. Do your research. Get some help. I don’t care if it’s a mental illness or a physical chronic condition just go out and do your research and call someone that can help you make your life a little less shitty. I’m only twenty-five and I feel like all my early opportunities have been destroyed because I did not have proper care. My story may be shocking to some but I am LUCKY. I have lived with people who have suffered and will most likely never get treatment.

Treatment isn’t easy.

I had to take a lot of different medications to find the ones that worked. Each persons brain chemistry is different. I had to take things that made me go up and down. Fogged me up. Made me too sick to eat. Gave me the shakes. I had to take up to eight different medications at one point.

Amounts were varied. Times I had to take medications were varied. Everything was slightly adjusted each week.

It got better but it got better slowly.

I didn’t realize that I was “cured” until one day my mother announced to the family that she had cancer.

Of course I was stunned.

I was overwhelmed.

But I did not curl up into that same depressed ball. I did not attack myself. I could comfort her and I could help my family and that is the greatest gift I have received from all this. I am no longer in pain and I am no longer spreading my pain. I told my mom that despite how much shit we’ve been through and how much fighting has happened and that while I don’t always agree with her and we will always be very different people I love the hell out of her.

One week later we found out that the cancer was a misdiagnosis. I was relieved and I was so happy that this was only an emotional “fire drill”. That I really was ready for the worse. That life wasn’t going to crush me.

While we still have tiny ups and downs my mother and I have gotten along almost perfectly since the incident and I would not trade that for the world. She has come with me to therapy, she understands my symptoms now, and when I am being manic she no longer acts with anger but with “Hey are you taking care of yourself like you should?” Then I stop, I think, then I remember that I drank a bunch of caffeine. Whoops!

Treatment has been the best thing for me but it will never be easy.

This morning I missed work, work that I was VERY lucky to have. Work that I REALLY need right now.

Because I was suffering from lithium withdrawl.

I have been going through it the last few days and I’m shaky and I won’t eat and I can’t sleep and little whirs of thought race through my brain. This article? I’ve already thought about it, milled over it, written it in my head about 50 times.

I cannot stop. I’m manic.

I did attempt to pick up my medication. I am very good about making sure it’s refilled properly. I do not like being off medication because I don’t like the withdrawals and the symptoms tumbling back even worse then before. I like feeling good.

So when I came to my pharmacy. They didn’t have it. They did not have the most common medication available for the mentally ill.

Call back tomorrow.

Maybe it will be in.

It will definately be in in two weeks though!

Cool. Two weeks. Right before I leave for a vacation I’ve been planning, scrimping, and saving for for four months. A potentially very very stressful vacation.

Fantastic

This has happened before. It seems to have happened with every single medication I’m on. I take four different kinds consistantly. Four in the morning, three at night.

Then there are pills for pain, for anxiety, for sleeplessness. They are to be taken as needed.

My road to recovery is never ending because there is no recovery. Every day I just learn to make it a little bit easier. I learn how to deal with the crap that life throws at me. Inconsiderate people, shitty doctors, not sleeping properly. I try not to dwell on it. Most of the time I don’t think about my illness beyond “did you take your pills yet?”.

Sometimes being on treatment is obnoxious. Sometimes you will meet people who are inconsiderate. Sometimes you will be so so tired of having to take pills and to go to appointments and get blood drawn.

But it’s worth it. Because if you don’t your symptoms will grow and overwhelm you. They will hobble your life and suck the joy out of it. You will be robbed of so many opportunities.

If you can’t get treatment. Seek alternative methods. Look up things that, while they probably can’t cure, they can make things easier. Hold on. Understand your symptoms so you have a better idea of how to control them.

Do not let this beast devour you from the inside out.

Video Blog - 12 / 06 / 11

Just another simple blog. Just letting you know what I’m up to and a short discussion of the book i’m reading ‘Run Your Butt Off’.

Hope you’re all great! Now… F1 TIME!!!

Sleepiness makes fatty foods extra tempting

Exercise:

  • Bike: 1 hour. Throughout the day. I did about 15 minutes in the morning and 45 at night.
  • Chest Press: 3 sets at 37.5 lbs of 15 reps.
  • Rows: 3 sets. 2 at 50 lbs for 15 reps. 1 set of 62.5 lbs for 5 reps!
  • Stretching

Food:

  • Breakfast: Kashi go lean with a banana.
  • Lunch: Yogurtland froyo :D
  • Dinner: Stew… again.
  • Snacks: Beef jerky.

I feel like I almost didn’t eat enough calories today. It wasn’t terribly healthy :) I went realized I was pretty hungry when I went to bed but I was too tired to think much about it.

So the video said to drink lots of water before eating anything and before you start your day. 1 to 2 liters. Now I don’t know about you, but 2 liters is a looott and before I even drink that to get to breakfast it will be 3 in the afternoon.

So, I will drink a lot of water, maybe half a liter and start there, then take a vitamin or two and begin the day.

:)

A new report published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) might make you re-think that “apple a day” — if it’s conventionally grown using pesticides.

The EWG points out that if consumers simply chose their daily recommended five servings of fruit and vegetables from the least contaminated list over five from the dirty dozen, they would reduce the amount of pesticides ingested by 92% - without having to shell out extra money for organics.

Feeling drowsier during the day because you didn’t catch enough ZZZs at night may make it easier for you to give in to temptation, suggests a preliminary study to be presented at the 2011 meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

….

When you don’t get the rest you need, “you might not have the ability to say no to that extra cookie or dessert,” points out Killgore, and you’re a little more likely to take in a few extra calories a day.

It says a tablespoon of mayonnaise, but you don’t have to...

I honestly think that a healthy weight loss does not have to consist of boring plain veggies, fruits, and lean meats… or just the typical “eat salad everyday”. Dress up your food a bit, add some spice, seasoning, and flavor! Of course, choose wisely

It’s the boring food that get most people of track and leading back to the less healthy choices. Make your weight loss experience worth while, because it takes a lot of time. So take the time to make amazing foods that’ll keep you going until you reach your weight goal and even the rest of your life!

Be creative lovelies!

So I got crazy excited last night, because I was 117.0, which is 0.2 lower than I was that morning! Normally I go down by about a lb overnight. So why this morning was I exactly the same? Anyone got any idea’s?

I hit 128 pounds today!

That means I’ve lost 9 pounds so far. (:

Sorry I’m really bad at updating this blog. :(

things i want to be able to wear:

1. new shorts! i bought them today (they were uber marked down on clearance, and i couldn’t help myselfff)  i went to Target to find some new bras, and after i tried on a bunch and gave up i found these shorts and didn’t want to waste any more time trying them on. they only had size Large.

Okay, now i’m going to venture on another direction:

the idea of my ass fitting into a size Large in Juniors is unheard of, okay? all of the women in my family have very very large backsides(we’re 100% whitest of white). i’m always a size 12 and its always super tight on my butt and thighs and then lose in my waist. when i started putting on weight, it all went directly to my stomach which started fitting into my size 12s and ventured into size 14 occasionally.

so now i’m losing weight, losing my tummy, not losing my butt. which is okay. its certainly who i am and i’m not willing to give my junk up entirely. however i’m totally looking forward to having a nice, smaller, toned backside to show off in nice floral shorts that i just bought.

back to the shorts. they only had large. i figured i might as well buy them as a goal. well, i got them and tried them on and they fit. “fit” means they go on my body, which is something noooo size large anythings do. so that was a huge acomplishment for me. however, they are skin tight.

i can’t even explain how impossible it is for a large to fit on my butt. like, i can’t. and it does. but i want to feel great in them! i’d never wear them in public like this, so i want to feel comfortable and great in them

so that’s goal number one.

2. my size 12 jeans. i bought them really tight and i could never wear them because it almost made me sick how tight they were (i’m broke okay) its so stupid that i can’t wear them now because they’re 12s and i can button them but they’re so tight on my stomach still, and i want to be able to wear them! it will be a really great moment when i can comfortably wear those.

3. i had another one what the hell was it.

3.

3.

3.

3.

I sometimes wonder if I’d be less afraid of rejection if I weren’t so large.

The personality I used to have is completely gone. The confident in your face chick is gone! The show everyone my tits is gone. The I like everyone is gone.

Well… I know that being smaller isn’t going to miraculously change my life but perhaps it will change my approach.

I fell down the past few days and am mustering up the nerve and confidence to go again. I’m not really mad at myself because I haven’t given up and it’s been 4 months since I started this journey. I don’t have a lot of weight loss to show for it, but I can honestly say that my mind is still where it needs to be. It’s not as focused as it could be but I say some effort is worthy of recognition. It’s better than ignoring it and doing nothing. Right?

Ugh. I hope so. I hope I don’t drop dead before I manage to get all of this under control.

(deep breath)

So, tomorrow, I try again. Tomorrow I’m going to be on top of shit, be prepared. … no bullshit. I need to feel lighter and not so heavy. I think a lighter step would mean a lighter heart.

Maybe?

Before you do ANYTHING else you need to run out and buy this:

Sure, the nutritional facts on the package may say that it has 190 calories per serving but this is a lie! The truth is that all dinosaur-themed products actually have negative calories!!! In good health news, a study finds that Californians live longer than the average American – 77.4 years for men and 82.2 years for women. Among states, California men have the seventh-highest life expectancy and women the fifth.

But with few exceptions, Californians’ life expectancy is still shorter than that of the healthiest nations. For men in Yuba County and women in Lake County, life expectancy was at a level not seen on the international frontier since 1978. Read more.

How times change…

Expenditures In Healthcare Globally As Well as in OECD Developed Nations:

A comprehensive study published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development last year in 2010, covering 30-plus nations including the majority of the most developed world economies (excluding Brazil, Russia, India or China), found stark contrasts between health costs here in the United States and those of other nations. Three years ago in 2008, the average of a list that includes, for example, the U.K., France, Germany, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Australia and the U.S., spent 9.0% of GDP on health care.  The highest figures were right here at home in the U.S. at 16.0% of GDP, France at 11.2% and Switzerland at 10.7%. Health expenditures per capita, on a purchasing power-adjusted basis (PPP), averaged $3,000.

Total health care expenditures around the world are difficult to determine, due to several unpredictable factors like emergencies and calamities, but $5.5 trillion would be a fair estimate for 2010.  That would place health care at about 8% of global GDP, with expenditures per capita about $800. This $5.4 trillion breaks down to approximately $2.6 trillion in the U.S., $2.4 trillion in non-U.S. OECD nations, and $0.5 trillion elsewhere around the world.  Outside the U.S. and the rest of the OECD, that would allow roughly $88 per capita per year.  Clearly, there is vast disparity in the availability and cost of care among nations, as there is with personal income and GDP.  Health care spending per capita in the U.S. was equal to about $8,290 in 2010, while spending in the world’s remotest villages was next to nothing. The trend over the near future is for the modest amount now spent on health care in emerging nations to rise dramatically, while OECD nations like America struggle to contain their own mountainous costs. The
total prescription drug market globally was in the $630 billion range in 2010.

Health Care Costs in the U.S.

Continuous increases in the cost of health care, especially here in the U.S., grow at rates far exceeding the rate of inflation in general, are hammering health consumers and payers of all types.  Insurance providers continue to struggle to contain costs. Employers, meanwhile, are hit hard by vast increases in the cost of providing coverage to employees and retirees. This, particularly felt, in small businesses all over the nation. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimated that in 2010, an employer’s premium cost to cover a typical family was $13,770 per year (that’s a 114% increase since 2000), with the typical worker paying 30% ($4,131) of that premium.

Many major employers are now utilizing preventative care programs in efforts to reduce employee illness, and thereby reduce costs. For example, many organizations have participated in providing/offering gym memberships to promote health through active, physical activities and exercise or the use of employee education aimed at better managing the effects of diseases such as diabetes.

Smart employers are showing their employees how to use the Internet to obtain better information about diseases and prevention.  Insurance providers are jumping on the Internet bandwagon as well.  Some employers are even hiring in-house physicians and nurses to provide primary and preventive care support in the workplace.

Patients and insurance companies are also dealing with sticker shock over the nation’s prescription drug costs. Other factors edging costs upward include expensive new medical technologies and patients’ demands for greater plan flexibility in choosing doctors and specialists at their will.  At the same time, hospitals and health systems write off massive amounts of revenues to bad debt, which increases costs for bill-paying patients.

In the wake of the tremendous growth of all aspects of the health care industry from the end of World War II onward, efficiency, competition and productivity were, regretfully, largely overlooked.  Much of this occurred because employers plus federal and state governments paid such a large portion of the health care bill.

Healthcare providers are caught between the desire to provide quality care and the desire for cost control on the part of payers, including PPOs, Medicare and Medicaid.  The cost versus care debate has spawned an energetic movement to improve the quality of health care in the U.S., much of it centered on patients’ rights, disease management, preventive health care and patient education. Wellness programs, nonetheless, with preventive medicine and health education remain woefully inadequate.

A Milken Institute study released in 2007 found that during the year 2003 (the year on which the study focused), 109 million Americans suffered from one or more of the most common, chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary conditions, mental disorders, stroke or hypertension.  This means that more than one-third of all Americans had these conditions to one degree or another. The study estimated one year’s cost of treatment of these conditions at $277 billion, but estimated lost economic productivity to be vastly higher at $1 trillion.  In other words, lost work and lost output due to these illnesses reduced the nation’s GDP by about 10%.  These burdens could be vastly reduced through better consumer health practices and better preventive medicine.  For example, obesity, lack of exercise and cigarette smoking are immense contributors to these diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that medical costs for obesity-related diseases rose as high as $147 billion in 2008, compared to $74 billion in 1998.

Back at our nation’s capital, both houses of Congress remain at odds—due to bipartisan differences, as to move forward with true reform in healthcare. Meanwhile, technology and innovations in the pharmaceutical/biotech industries, as well as in the holistic side of managing health—-together with health care costs, march ahead relentlessly.

Small Salad… which is necessary because I’ve been waiting all day long to eat at a friends birthday dinner. I’m irritated only slightly because she chose a breakfast place to eat at. Nearly impossible to find something healthy or that I won’t feel guilty about. I will just have to see how little of it I can eat without getting questioned

See, I ate over 1,600 calories because I was working out a lot, if I would have stayed at 1,200 and worked out the same that would be best. Or are you supposed to eat that much more when you workout? Help!
