Biggest Loser.

In 2004, brain scans showed that people taking Accutane suffer a 21 percent decrease in frontal brain activity, the part of the brain that plays a critical role in mood and social interaction. These brain changes may explain the depression, suicidal and aggressive behavior, and psychotic reactions reported by some Accutane users.

I took Acutane in high school. Maybe I would have had a better high experience without it. Looking back, I wish I had known more about food and health. If I had eaten differently, I think my skin would have been better and I never would have needed it.

purple potato eater on Flickr.

I call this dish the purple people eater.

1 lb Peruvian purple potatoes (or whatever you have on hand)
1 red onion grilled or sauteed
1 garlic clove
Parsley (or any fresh herb)
S&P
Earth Balance (or Olive Oil)
Juice of half of a lemon

As you can see this recipe is very very easy and you can adjust it to your taste.
I cleaned the potatoes and slightly boiled them, then drizzled with Olive oil and roasted (at 400 degrees.) While they are in the oven saute or grill your chopped purple onion in Olive oil or earth balance and mix in garlic at the end just to slightly heat. After removing potatoes from the oven when the are slightly brown, mix with previously grilled purple onions and garlic, then sprinkled in lemon juice, olive oil to coat (or earth balance) and fresh herbs of your choice. I used parsley in this photo. Garnish with herbs and a bit more lemon. Bon Appetit!

PS The lemon is crucial to this dish as it is what brings back the purple color when the potatoes are cooked! :)

It’s not even 11am and it already feels an eternity. So I should update you guys, not sure how many of you actually read my text posts but whatever. My boyfriend’s mom went to the hospital with sudden intense confusion. She has regained some lucidity but where she remembers some things, she forgets others.

It’s looking more permanent by the day :[ she was supposed to get an MRI yesterday so we should hear of the results from that today. It’s terrible, the boy is 23 and already lost one of his parents last July. Losing both parents in just a year…I can’t even imagine. I am just so thankful I could be here for him.

Please put him and his mum in your thoughts guys, and put that positive and healing energy out there. They really need it right now.

Bottom line: We don’t know the real risks of excessive cell phone use to our health. There is simply insufficient evidence to make a firmer statement than what the WHO has made with their “may be linked to cancer” report.

I like this video from CNN with Anderson Cooper because it does discuss a very simple and real prevention action: use an earpiece.

So I was eating a gigantic piece of chocolate when…

I saw that the latest catalogue for Anthropologie had arrived. Naturally, I’m too poor to get anything from there that is not on sale, but I started perusing through potential fall bargains in the June edition of: “if only you were rich.” When suddenly, I came across this photo. This girl looks so elegant. And LOOK! She’s eating something! Granted, she’s probably not actually eating whatever this is. So, to make a long story short, I saw this picture, put the damn chocolate back, and walked upstairs. That’s true inspiration for ya.

Here’s the full catalogue if you find yourself stuffing some food in your mouth on this fine evening:

    http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/category.jsp?navAction=jump&viewall=true&id=CLOTHES-CATALOG3&cm_re=May_11-_-053011_hmpg_catalog-_-catalog1

Woot! I celebrated by eating a chocolate donut, a small piece of berry crumb cake, a chocolate chipper from Panera, and an iced grande cinnamon dolce latte. And half a bag of cheddar popcorn.

Don’t worry, there was some space between these things. A couple minutes, at least.

they’re called mio, and they’re really neat! they take your heart rate, tell you how many calories and grams of fat you burn in a workout, how many minutes you spend in, above and below your target heart rate and your average and max heart rates during a workout! the best part is, if you touch and hold the outside of the watch face, it takes your heart rate right there! it also connects to the computer with this chest strap thing and you can upload all of the information to a website.

hopefully i can have it all worked out by friday, because there’s a big pile of instructions i still need to read!

The Boss is having a rough night. She’s thrown up four times in the last six hours, and she has a slight fever. So far, no bloody stool or eardrum-rupturing screams. Just a kid who’s too hungry to sleep yet too sick to eat or nurse.

    I hope she’ll be okay.

Today wasn’t too terrible, health wise. For breakfast, I had two slices of ham and a pickle (we were all out of eggs). Lunch: chef salad with low calorie/low fat dressing. It was a very scrumptious salad, I’ll be having another one later. I had some pistachios for a snack, and a lemon-pepper pork chop and green beans for dinner. For dessert, I had honey roasted peanuts, and thought I was doing quite excellently until my dad gave me cherry pie and vanilla ice cream. I didn’t want to be rude, since it was so sweet of him to make it for me, so I had it. Dessert has always been my weakness. Overall, I think it was a good day.

Something that’s been helping me is thinking, “Would I rather have this now or be skinny later?” And more often than not the answer it in favor of the latter. Another thing that was helpful was thinking of my daily carbohydrate allowance as money. Do I want to spend that ‘money’ on potatoes at dinner, or on ice cream at dessert? Since I’m a fan of dessert, the answer is almost always in favor of ice cream. :P

Hopefully tomorrow will be another good day! I’m feeling optimistic about the future. I hope you are too.

Today was a very big slab of proof in just how far my body has come since moving to NYC. Yesterday, inspired by an episode of Anthony Bourdain trekking around Boston, I ordered a pastrami sandwich after work in a nearby deli. Oh my fucking god, was that thing full of meat. It looked more like a cave where a small monster could hide out, rather than a sandwich. I ate it with relish, over stuffing myself, but enjoying the taste anyway. I sincerely regretted that decision however, at 2 in the morning trying to go to sleep with a lump of meat in my tummy. If I’d been in Orlando, this wouldn’t have been a problem. My bedroom was built within the garage, where we kept an extra fridge for all of our food. So I often fell asleep in high school and my early college years, after self medicating with slabs of meat, potatoes, sugary drinks, and whatever else I could get my hands on. I went to sleep better with food in my belly.

But those days are far over. My bedroom now lies 3 stories high of any food source, and I took up dog walking as a job which did an immense job of exhausting my body in all the right ways. My cousin also doesn’t eat a lot of red meat, so most of my diet turned into heavy vegetables, and fruits. The occasional fish or chicken, maybe turkey pops in too. Slowly but surely my body changed gears, and I happily went along with it. Seeing how much ‘damage’ one pastrami sandwich could do to my mood/body chemistry/sleep habits really sort of shook me up and made me appreciate all the changes I’ve been able to make for myself.

    Man, I love New York.

So this evening, I went and took a nice jog/walk over to my local park. I managed to jog the WHOLE way there (super impressive), and I made a lap around, and surprised myself again by deciding to make another lap. I had to only walk that one though, because my core muscles were kicking up a storm and making it hard to breathe.

Ugh, my life. Such in a good place. Years ago I would have never imagined my stringing praises of physical exercise. It’s taken me a while to get where I am and appreciate it now, but it’s been all worth it. When I run, swim, walk, or do yoga, I think, “This isn’t just for me. This is for my kids, my future self, my family, or the person who might one day get my organs when I die.” I don’t just do it for me, I do it in a communal sense. And cause it just damn well feels good by the end of it. Even though the first 5-10 minutes can be fucking wack and I feel miserable. But it picks up after that!

    Tonight

Among wine’s recently discovered benefits are: improved heart health, less plaque accumulation in arteries, better bone health, cataract prevention, decreased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, possibly cancer prevention and more. The miracle ingredient appears to be resveratrol, a naturally occurring substance found in grape skins, that has antioxidant effects (meaning it wipes out compounds in the body that can damage DNA and lead to disease). However, more isn’t necessarily better. While the American Heart Association recommends up to one glass of wine per day for women and two for men, filling your bubble glass to the brim won’t keep the grim reaper away. Most studies say one 5-ounce serving is sufficient. There’s no clear evidence pointing to one varietal being better than another, so go with red or white — whichever your taste buds prefer.

So since iv’e been back in California my diet has changed greatly from when I was in New York. In New York I was on the poor mans diet i.e. lots of pasta, pb&j’s, and whatever vegetables I could get my hands on plus miles upon miles of walking a day. This lead to me losing about 7 pounds. Since I have been back in California and living at my parents house I am now able to get my hands on whatever food I want which sounds great but also makes it easier to fall of the horse since now I actually have the ability to eat more food…

But being able to notice the weight I have lost has helped keep me on track to my goal of 5 more pounds. I have been incorporating more salads into my meals with plenty of raw chopped vegetables * The less cooked your vegetables the more benefits you get out of them* and drinking more water through out the day which has always been a bad habit of mine. Also, more whole grains which has been pretty easy, cheerios and oatmeal in the mornings.

People always complain about how hard it is to eat healthy now a days but I think its never been easier. It’s really your own choice and no one else’s fault as to what food you put in your mouth. So think about what you are eating, and what benefits it has towards your health. Even though eating fat filled meals with no vegetables in sight hasn’t effected you right now it will always catch up with you in the end.

So eat healthy! I promise not only will it help with weight and overall health it will make you happier in the end.

    Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Shifting the balance in the war on cancer:

Cancer genomics, the study of the human cancer genome, is, according to the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health, “a search within ‘cancer families’ and patients for the full collection of genes and mutations - both inherited and sporadic - that contribute to the development of a cancer cell and its progression from a localized cancer to one that grows uncontrolled and metastasizes (spreads throughout the body).”

Modeled after the Human Genome Project, the 15-year long process to sequence all 3 billion base pairs in the human genome (a virtual blueprint for a human being) that ended in 2003, the Cancer Genome Atlas is a collective database as scientists and academics attempt to sequence the entire array of genetic mutations that cause every known type of cancer.

According to Eric Lander, one of the principal leaders of the Human Genome Project, the number of cancerous genetic mutations is finite because the number of base pairs in the human genome is finite.  “The key is finding the Achilles’ heels for the mutations in these pathways.”

So, I guess I should do an update on my life? Seeing as half the time, this blog consists of gifs, random pictures and constant liveblogging. of course I’ll put it in a cut seeing as, I’m not about to spam people that don’t really care about these little details.

    • I just got a part-time job as hostess for macaroni grill at the Orlando International Airport. I’m excited to a certain extent, and at least with this I can start saving for graduate school.
    • I’m not doing speech language pathology anymore. I guess, I just don’t like it as much as I thought I did. Instead, I’m going to get a masters in elementary education and then a PH.D in elementary education so that I can teach in a post-secondary/university setting. I love to work with children for sometime in my life, but I’d love to become a college professor in the long run, and so therefore a PH.D is needed!
    • Of course, not just needed. It’s wanted.
    • Some people in my life may not agree with this choice, but at this point in my life? fuck them, if you aren’t going to die for me, then you sure as hell are not going to live my life.
    • I’m still playing nurse for my mom. She’ll probably be in bed and out of work because of her surgery. I don’t mind really, she’s one of the only people who hasn’t taken advantage of me so it’s the least I can do.
    • I’m still single as fuck. I’m honestly okay with it, but I get those few moments throughout the day, where I really miss sex. I mean, seriously. It’s literally been almost 2 years. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME. I’m not actively trying to date anyways, so it’s not like it is an accidental dryspell or something. It’s technically on purpose? Just untill I can trust someone to get that close to be again. I’m not the one night stand type.
    • I’m still screening my dad’s phone calls.

    People came and I taught.

    it went pretty well.

I ended up timing it perfectly. AND I did laps afterward. Which was good. I didn’t get to do a lot of laps because I had to go work, but still. I did do some laps.

Um, I will post my aerobics workout sometime. I have to get ready for a practice I am helping at.

    Especially from those of you who know more about health foods~ T_T;
message me for more details ok? super need help and its killing me coz i feel so damn stupid~ T_T; (no anons pls~ i need to get back to you in your askbox~ >.<)

My grammar maybe really lousy today and I am also not sure why that is. All I can say is that i am really excited about strength training lately and it gets worse everyday I work because I may do a couple of pull-ups and get one more every time I try just teasing me to get just one more.

I need to definitely start getting into more advanced routines and move along…..

So what advanced techniques should I do?

Today there are so many things that are made out of plastic and many things that we eat and drink come in plastic packaging. The increased awareness of the harmful chemicals in plastics is causing concern and it is important to understand which plastics are safe and harmful. So, how do we determine which are the safe plastics and which ones we should try not to use? It is important to understand the types of plastics. All plastics are identified by a code numbered 1 through 7 that is typically located on the bottom of the packaging with the famous recycling triangle around it. The next time you use plastic (or buy canned food for your bomb shelter), pay attention to the following numbers to know what to avoid:

1 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) Used to make soft drink, water, sports drink, ketchup, salad dressing bottles, peanut butter, pickle, jelly and jam jars.
BAD: Due to antimony leaching although many sources will say it is ok for one time use.

2 High density polyethylene (HDPE) Milk, water, and juice bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, cereal box liners, and grocery, trash, and retail bags.
GOOD: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

3 Polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC) Most cling-wrapped meats, cheeses, and other foods sold in delicatessens and groceries are wrapped in PVC.
BAD: To soften into its flexible form, manufacturers add “plasticizers” during production. Traces of these chemicals can leach out of PVC when in contact with foods. According to the National Institutes of Health, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), commonly found in PVC, is a suspected human carcinogen.

4 Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) Some bread and frozen food bags and squeezable bottles.
OK: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones, but not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.

5 Polypropylene (PP) Some ketchup bottles and yogurt and margarine tubs.
OK: Hazardous during production, but not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. Not as widely recycled as #1 and #2.

6 Polystyrene (PS) Foam insulation and also for hard applications (e.g. cups, some toys)
BAD: Benzene (material used in production) is a known human carcinogen. Butadiene and styrene (the basic building block of the plastic) are suspected carcinogens. Energy intensive and poor recycling.

7 Other (usually polycarbonate) Baby bottles, microwave ovenware, eating utensils, plastic coating for metal cans.
BAD: Made with biphenyl-A, a chemical invented in the 1930s in search for synthetic estrogens. A hormone disruptor. Simulates the action of estrogen when tested in human breast cancer studies. Can leach into food as product ages.

For any of the newbs out there just getting started on their vegetarian/vegan diet, these things are easily attainable, easy to prepare with a few other ingredients, and good for you too ;)

Mono eating - the practice of eating one particular food for an entire meal, in sufficient quantity to produce satiation until the next meal.

This can be seen in nature. Animals usually eat one food, and one food only, until they’re full. There are no “recipes” containing 5+ ingredients in nature.

    Benefits:

    • Optimal digestion, absorption, and assimilation
    • Better able to recognize when you are satiated
    • Enhances your senses, so that you’re able to pick up specific tastes in your food
    • Helps you avoid addiction to stimulation and overeating
    • Doesn’t leave you tired and dull, instead: Awake, Clear head!
    • Simplicity. Preparation is as easy as cutting a watermelon in half and eating it with a fork.

    Examples:

    • 4 Bananas (480 calories)
    • 3 Mangos (390 calories)
    • 1/4 of a Watermelon (340 calories)

It might take some time for your stomach to adjust to you eating such large amounts of food, since we are generally used to eating concentrated, high-calorie meals. This is where blending is a huge help. For example, I usually fix up some Banana Milk.. one of my favorite Mono-Meals. Be sure to “chew your smoothie” so that you get some saliva in with the food, and drink it slowly.

I’ve always had body issues. They stemmed from my parents constantly trying to push me into diets and telling me that I needed to lose weight. They don’t do it so much anymore. The reason I’m bringing this up is because yesterday I realized something: my mom also has body issues. I don’t know why this never occurred to me before. I was weighing myself for weigh in Wednesday and she was telling me how I should be exercising and eating right. This is when I started to get annoyed with her. She told me that she didn’t want me to get mad at her because she knows how I feels.

I’ve always been fat. Your father has always been skinny. I understand the struggle. I know what people think of us.

Then we both weighed ourselves, and we’re literally less than a pound apart. I never thought that my mother, a strong, independent woman, would have body issues. For all these years, I thought my parents were being highly critical. I guess they care.

(Daily Mail Reporter By MARK DUELL) — An abnormal growth of blood vessels on her left eye could have blinded her. But Christian couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland relied on faith healing instead of taking infant daughter Alayna to a doctor.

Couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, members Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ

Couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, members Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ, relied on faith healing instead of taking infant daughter Alayna to a doctor

Her condition has now improved under state-ordered medical care but her parents have been convicted in Oregon of felony criminal mistreatment.

Alayna was born in December 2009 and developed the blood vessels that covered her left eye and threatened her vision.

But her parents belong to unorthodox Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ, which relies on faith healing.

So rather than taking their daughter to a doctor, they relied on prayer, anointing her with oil and laying hands on her.

Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy Emile Burley testified in May that he made a child welfare check at the family home in June 2010, and instantly noticed a ‘large bulging area’ on Alayna’s left eye.

It was ‘the size of a golf ball, maybe a little larger’, he said - and photos shown in court suggest at one point that it was as big as a baseball.

Her parents said in another hearing last July they wouldn’t have willingly taken her to a doctor because it would violate their religious beliefs.

Around 20 supporters from their church were in court to hear the verdict, made by the jury in an hour, and sentencing was set for June 24.

Two other couples from the same church whose children died from untreated ailments have been prosecuted in the last two years.

Jeff and Marci Beagley got 16 months in jail after their son Neil, 16, died of complications from an untreated urinary tract blockage.

The Beagleys’ daughter’s husband, Carl Brent Worthington, was jailed for 60 days over the death of his young girl Ava, who had bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection.

They are expected to receive probation or some jail time, although the maximum jail sentence for first-degree criminal mistreatment is five years.

But the Wylands were the victims of inflexible bureaucrats and religious persecution because of their faith-healing beliefs, Mark Cogan, defending, said.

They were loving parents who fully cooperated with court orders, taking the child to the doctor and giving her prescribed medication, defense lawyers added.

But this defense was just a smokescreen, Christine Landers, prosecuting, said.

The couple had more than six months to seek medical attention before the state intervened but they did not because of their faith, she said.

The Wylands are the third couple from the same church to have been prosecuted by Clackamas County in just two years.

The Followers of Christ was founded in the 1890s in Kansas but moved to Oregon City in the 1940s.

The devout followers firmly believe that the power of prayer and the laying on of hands - where ministers lay their hands on believers while praying - can cure illnesses.

It’s thought that some followers secretly visit traditional doctors - but if found out, they are likely to find themselves ostracized.

5 Best Natural Sources of Calcium for Healthy Bones:

Collard Greens.  Leafy green vegetables are one of the most healthful sources of calcium and magnesium.  One cup of boiled collards contains a whopping 358 milligrams.  Kale, broccoli, Swiss chard, bok choy and turnip greens are full of calcium, too.  The one exception is spinach, which has a high concentration of oxalate, making it difficult for the body to absorb calcium.

Baked beans.  Beans in general are a great source of calcium, as well as a hearty non-animal protein.  One serving of baked beans contains over 100 milligrams of calcium.  Navy beans, white beans and garbanzos are also full of calcium and magnesium, as are soybean products like tofu.

Oatmeal. Surprisingly, two packets of instant oatmeal contains between 100-150 mg of calcium, and more magnesium than a cup of collard greens.  Quinoa is another calcium-rich grain.  Try either for a healthy breakfast.

Sesame seeds.  Just one tablespoon of sesame seeds contains about 88 milligrams of calcium, and about a third of the daily value for magnesium. Make sure to buy the unhulled kind, though, as it’s the seed’s hull (outer shell) that contains most of the nutrients.  Try grinding them up like flax seeds and adding to breakfast cereal or soups and salads.

Almonds.  Almonds are a nutritional powerhouse, providing a dense source of protein and fiber, along with calcium and other minerals necessary for building strong bones.  Just one serving has 750 milligrams of calcium.  Almonds, plain or mixed with dried fruit, make great snacks by themselves, or try replacing your jar of peanut butter with nutrient-rich almond butter.

Indonesian worker slaughtering a dog for a meal. A meal of dog meat and rice is believed to cure skin disease and boost vitality, and is sold for 99 cents.

Interesting to compare, in America we are told that a healthy diet is subsidized by meat and dairy, when in fact a diet of over 5% protein is unhealthy because of its excessive, and proven carcinogenic effects.  To put that into perspective, some fruits and vegetables with the lowest amounts of protein generally range at about 7%, still higher than the necessary protein intake.  An over-abundance of this protein from animals results in heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancers which are almost unseen in areas of the world that exist off of a whole food diet.

Having healthy skin also includes staying away from certain foods. Below are the worst foods for skin and should be avoiding or at least consumed in moderation.

Coffee. Can’t live without your morning Starbucks? You might have to in order to avoid the high levels of caffeine and sugar that can cause oily spots and rob your body of moisture. Try getting one of their many teas instead.

Salt. No surprise here, too much salt can also dry out your skin and lead to other health problems. It is often found in chips, pretzels, and even many soups have a high salt count. Try substituting a small amount of sea salt in recipes that call for regular salt.

Greasy foods. Also not a shocker, the oils found in these foods contain a high level of saturated fats and little to none of the essential fatty acids. These foods can include pizza, cheeseburgers, or anything fried. If the bag or box you bought it in is soaked in grease, this is not a good food for your skin or body.

Alcohol. No one ever said getting healthy skin was easy. It can also dehydrate your skin, especially after over indulging. Many drinks, such as daiquiris and margaritas, can also contain lots of sugar. Those who must have a drink should stick to light beer or a clear liquor mixed with water or plain soda.

White starches. These include items made with white flour such as bread, pastas, and rice. They can raise insulin levels causing inflammation in the skin. This sort of food also takes the place of whole grains, which can contain high amounts of selenium.

Soda, this includes Red Bull and similar drinks. Getting your eight glasses a day from soda can do damage to your skin. The sugar and artificial elements make it more difficult for your body to hydrate. Lipton and Pepsi offer a sparkling green tea that makes a great substitute.

Processed meats. These can be full of nitrates, salt, hydrogenated fats, and many other harmful ingriedients which are damaging to the skin. Any processed meat, such as bacon, hot dogs, sausage, anything found in a Hot Pocket, and similar products can be full of these. If you’re not sure, flip the package over and read the ingredients to see if it passes the test.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by emaciation, a relentless pursuit of thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight, a distortion of body image and intense fear of gaining weight, a lack of menstruation among girls and women, and extremely disturbed eating behavior. Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting, or misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas.

Many people with anorexia see themselves as overweight, even when they are starved or are clearly malnourished. Eating, food and weight control become obsessions. A person with anorexia typically weighs herself or himself repeatedly, portions food carefully, and eats only very small quantities of only certain foods. Some who have anorexia recover with treatment after only one episode. Others get well but have relapses. Still others have a more chronic form of anorexia, in which their health deteriorates over many years as they battle the illness.

According to some studies, people with anorexia are up to ten times more likely to die as a result of their illness compared to those without the disorder. The most common complications that lead to death are cardiac arrest, and electrolyte and fluid imbalances. Suicide also can result.

Many people with anorexia also have coexisting psychiatric and physical illnesses, including depression, anxiety, obsessive behavior, substance abuse, cardiovascular and neurological complications, and impaired physical development.

Other symptoms may develop over time, including:

    • thinning of the bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis)
    • brittle hair and nails
    • dry and yellowish skin
    • growth of fine hair over body (e.g., lanugo)
    • mild anemia, and muscle weakness and loss
    • severe constipation
    • low blood pressure, slowed breathing and pulse
    • drop in internal body temperature, causing a person to feel cold all the time
    • lethargy

    TREATING ANOREXIA involves three components:

    1. restoring the person to a healthy weight;
    2. treating the psychological issues related to the eating disorder; and
    3. reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts that lead to disordered eating, and preventing relapse.

Some research suggests that the use of medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics or mood stabilizers, may be modestly effective in treating patients with anorexia by helping to resolve mood and anxiety symptoms that often co-exist with anorexia. Recent studies, however, have suggested that antidepressants may not be effective in preventing some patients with anorexia from relapsing. In addition, no medication has shown to be effective during the critical first phase of restoring a patient to healthy weight. Overall, it is unclear if and how medications can help patients conquer anorexia, but research is ongoing.

Different forms of psychotherapy, including individual, group and family-based, can help address the psychological reasons for the illness. Some studies suggest that family-based therapies in which parents assume responsibility for feeding their afflicted adolescent are the most effective in helping a person with anorexia gain weight and improve eating habits and moods.

Shown to be effective in case studies and clinical trials, this particular approach is discussed in some guidelines and studies for treating eating disorders in younger, nonchronic patients.

Others have noted that a combined approach of medical attention and supportive psychotherapy designed spe-cifically for anorexia patients is more effective than just psychotherapy. But the effectiveness of a treatment depends on the person involved and his or her situation. Unfortunately, no specific psychotherapy appears to be consistently effective for treating adults with anorexia. However, research into novel treatment and prevention approaches is showing some promise. One study suggests that an online intervention program may prevent some at-risk women from developing an eating disorder.

    Homemade Strawberry Milk

1 Cup Strawberries (Either fresh or frozen), sliced

    1/4 Cup Sugar

    1/2 Cup Water

    1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

    2 Cups Skim Milk

In a medium saucepan, boil strawberries, sugar, water, and vanilla extract for 10-12 minutes, or until the strawberries release all their juices and the mixture is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a fine mech sieve (save cooked strawberries to put on yogurt, ice cream, or pancakes). Refrigerate the syrup until cool.

Stir together the syrup and milk (if too sweet, add 1/2 cup more milk to dilute the flavor) and serve in chilled glasses.

*Can you tell I adore strawberries?

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food (e.g., binge-eating), and feeling a lack of control over the eating. This binge-eating is followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as purging (e.g., vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics), fasting and/or excessive exercise.

Unlike anorexia, people with bulimia can fall within the normal range for their age and weight. But like people with anorexia, they often fear gaining weight, want desperately to lose weight, and are intensely unhappy with their body size and shape. Usually, bulimic behavior is done secretly, because it is often accompanied by feelings of disgust or shame. The binging and purging cycle usually repeats several times a week. Similar to anorexia, people with bulimia often have coexisting psychological illnesses, such as depression, anxiety and/or substance abuse problems. Many physical conditions result from the purging aspect of the illness, including electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal problems, and oral and tooth-related problems.

    Other symptoms include:

    • chronically inflamed and sore throat
    • swollen glands in the neck and below the jaw
    • worn tooth enamel and increasingly sensitive and decaying teeth as a result of exposure to stomach acids
    • gastroesophageal reflux disorder
    • intestinal distress and irritation from laxative abuse
    • kidney problems from diuretic abuse
    • severe dehydration from purging of fluids

As with anorexia, TREATMENT FOR BULIMIA often involves a combination of options and depends on the needs of the individual.

To reduce or eliminate binge and purge behavior, a patient may undergo nutritional counseling and psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or be prescribed medication. Some antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), which is the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating bulimia, may help patients who also have depression and/or anxiety. It also appears to help reduce binge-eating and purging behavior, reduces the chance of relapse, and improves eating attitudes.

CBT that has been tailored to treat bulimia also has shown to be effective in changing binging and purging behavior, and eating attitudes. Therapy may be individually oriented or group-based.

The Missing Ingredient for Good Health:

    Article by at 2011-06-09 07:48:42

    Always trust a yoga student

Hmmm no…The other day someone said he like this one picture of me two years ago because I was ‘busty”. No, I never have been- you can credit my supposed bustiness to a good bra and flattering shirt.

Oh and then he said I’m going to feed you so much so you can look like that again. So yea I took that in a negative way. I was ticked.

I went vegan out of pure disgust for what I was eating, and for what I’d eaten all my life. The truth of the matter is, I think cannibalism is fucking unbearably gross - and eating animals is not different. Whether it’s a product of an animal, the eggs, or the flesh itself, it’s all the same. I went vegan because I no longer wanted to be a speciesist hypocrite contributing to an industry that commits genocide on hundreds of thousands of harmless creatures with the same natural right we have to not be made to die prematurely or be exploited. As it says in my sidebar, the vegan lifestyle is devoid of murder, cruelty, speciesism, and contribution to the rape the dairy industry exists from.

Beyond that? Veganism is the cleanest way to live (besides raw veganism, but that’s a step I cannot take yet). All the dairy you consume contains an incredible amount of fat, drugs, and not to mention byproducts you don’t want to be consuming (pus, blood, radiation from Japan…) the list goes on. I don’t want that in my body at all. We’re not meant to digest dairy or flesh - why do you think like 90% of the population of the world is lactose intolerant to some degree? That’s an insane amount.

See my Dairy, Milk, Meat, and Animal Cruelty tags for more reasons why I’m vegan.

AND THE CRAZY KEEPS ON COMIN'

I have to.  There’s no way it can be accurate.  I’m hungover.  I ate at a weird time last night that I don’t know.  I am dehydrated.

I have yet to step on the scale at all…and I am semi-tempted to just put it off until next week…simply because I don’t even think I lost at all…

I have 1 week until my graduation party.

    So here’s my week plan:

    • Monday - Gym
    • Tuesday- Six Flags(a lot of walking) - NO JUNK FOOD AT ALL
    • Wednesday - Gym
    • Thursday - Gym
    • Friday - Gym

See a trend?  I am angry that I feel like I am on a plateau, and I want nothing more than to beat the hell out of it and see the scale drop.

Anger is usually a bad thing, but it’s just what I need right now to keep going and not give up.

Medical problems of 1911 are still with us
Even after 100 years of medical progress, diseases and viruses like tuberculosis and the plague still spread in many countries.

what’s there to fear about weight loss? It should be something that drives and motivates you, not makes you fearful!

However I used to have a fear of weight loss because my “friends” (really just peers) were judging me SO hard. It was weird, at first they were so proud of me for losing weight, and then when I started looking really awesome (I reached my lowest weight of 140 lbs like three weeks ago— which I have since bounced back from…) they started saying things like “YOU NEED TO EAT” .. even though I was…

They were judging me on something they knew nothing about and that really bothered me. But it doesn’t anymore, I’m doing this for myself— not for them.

Oh, no. That’s totally normal. I think that happens to most, if not all girls. You could probably discuss it with somebody on this blog:

    Comparing MyPlate to farm subsidies
If the USDA says that vegetables and fruits should make up half of our diets, why does less than 1 percent of its food subsidies go to farmers who grow produce?

Drink 1/8 lemon and water every morning.

Why? Drinking lemon water helps you maintain a higher metabolism, fights hunger cravings, helps you lose weight faster and boosts your immune system, to name just a few benefits!

PS. It is recommended to drink the lemon water hot.

A Deficiency of Vitamins Can Actually Have Serious Health Consequences.: Symptoms of deficiency of...

My last name happens to be Popp, so you’d think I would drink alot of that carmel colored goodness that lurks in every vending machine, and food joint across America.  I do drink pop (or soda for some of you folks), I enjoy it from time to time but its has become more of a “reward” than being a regular staple in my diet.  Soft-drinks have been under much scrutiny over the last few years by many health officials because these drinks are seen as excess calories, especially amongst kids.  Really, they are.  Most sugar sweetened beverages contain around 150 kcals per serving, and if consumed in excess over an entire year can lead to around 10-12 lbs of weight gain just from these drinks alone!

In a recent study in adult males, the consumption of sugar-sweetened (or non-diet) beverages was highly correlated with an increased risk for the development of type-2 diabetes.  Type-2 diabetes is a very serious disease, and one that is preventable!  Type-2 diabetes results in your body pretty much becoming insulin resistant, that is to say that the insulin you produced has NO EFFECT on lowering your blood sugar levels (insulin is released after a meal to decrease your blood glucose levels).  The result: you have very high glucose levels that can lead to a whole cohort of issues.

So, sugar-sweetened beverages are correlated with risk for developing type-2 diabetes, anything else?  Yes, the study also found an inverse relationship between coffee drinkers and type-2 diabetes.  Coffee is low in sugar so it would make sense that they are inversely related.  They also found that artificially sweetened drinks—those lower in calories and sugar—were not associated with an increase risk for type 2 diabetes.  This would also make sense because a lower sugar, lower calorie drink would not have that great of an effect on insulin secretion, similar to coffee. But, they happened to analyze another group of studies on beverage consumption and type-2 diabetes.  These studies found a positive correlation with artificially sweetened drinks and diabetes (opposite of what this study found).  They mentioned that artificially sweetened drinks might actually stimulate individuals to increase consumption of sweet foods at subsequent meals, but this was seen more as an idea rather than something that was proven true in the study.  I mention this because it raises an interesting thought.  Have you ever had a bite of a cookie, or ice cream and immediately wanted more?  I am sure you have, we all have.  Its so hard to put sweet foods down!  The observation that artificially sweetened drinks stimulates an increase in the consumption of sweet foods plays off this idea—we want more of a good thing!  Sweet foods have found to stimulate the pleasure center in the brain, sugar increases a hormone called dopamine—the pleasure hormone (Sex, and some drugs (like cocaine) also stimulate dopamine).

This study was interesting because it raised some intriguing points.  The sample population was limited (white, adult males), which does not represent the entire population as a whole.  But, it can provide some information between increased consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, and possibly even artificially sweetened beverages, and there role in the development of a preventable disease.

Try and cut back on the ever-so sugar sweet beverages—they’re not so sweet on your waistline!  And personally, I think these drinks are okay but in moderation. Consume diet, tea, coffee, favored water or any zero-calorie drinks if you can.

This post is going to be about the long road it took for me to get proper care, care I only started receiving last year.

For most people with bipolar disorder it can take up to ten years. One in four are lucky enough to get it in less than three.

According to Dr Wes Burgess in his Bipolar Handbook: “A recent study showed that almost 70% of bipolar patients had been misdiagnosed more than 3 times before receiving their correct diagnosis”.

I was misdiagnosed three times. Depression. Anxiety. Hormonal imblance. Voodoo Curse.

It took me three years to get a correct diagnosis.

It took me three more years to get treatment for it.

I’m going to refrain from making this entry really triggering because honestly I think that anyone who has fought with this kind of bullshit could find some help in reading this. That if you’ve stopped and given up you need to look and go “Damn, maybe I should try again.”

Keep going and don’t stop, because even if you get proper treatment you will be burdened from shit from all sides. It’s not just mental illness it’s for anyone who has suffered from a chronic lifelong disease.

This is just my personal experience and I just hope it echoes among some people. I have been worse off than some, much much more fortunate than most.

When I look back to when I was a child I can remember early niggling signs that something was wrong.

I thought about things too hard. Wondered if people didn’t like me. Little moments were blown up, VERY, little moments. I focused on them and I got angry and then I got overwhelmed and I cried. I cried a lot. I was put out in the hall for crying.

I was asked by teachers “Why” was I crying.

The answer is the same as it was then: “I don’t know.”

I learned to get some grip on it. I would pull myself away from the situation if I could. Choke back tears in the hallway or bathroom. Move on.

I learned that crying was bad because it made other people uncomfortable. While some can solve this emotional issue by warming up, making the crying stop through gentle words, soft gestures- I was not lucky enough to have these people as my parents.

I was punished for crying. Screamed at to stop. Why was I crying. WHY?

They did not see the emotions whirriing in my head they did not see the negative thoughts repeat themselves at a mile a minute. They did not see my mind become an ouroboros of self destructive thoughts.

    It was just me. Crying.

It got worse through puberty. Other symptoms reared their ugly head. I don’t think I’m ever going to talk about some of the stuff that happened then.

One day I found myself in a counselers office, sobbing almost uncontrolably. Trying to calm myself while the woman on the other side stared at me wide eyed, my panic causing HER to panic. She called my mom and told her “YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO GO TO THERAPY.” The way she worded it just made it sound like a punishment.

Get this kid outta here! I don’t know what the fuck to do with em! Gettin tears all over the damn place!

I walked home and I cried home and I couldn’t remember what set me off originally or why it even mattered. I was just a bundle of mixed up brain chemistry, my mind sloshing and crackling.

My parents told me, once again, that I was just a very emotional and sensitive child and I shouldn’t listen to that woman I mean my grades were good I don’t need therapy!

My grades were good because I didn’t find High School particularly demanding. To put it in context: My highschool just graduated my brother, who did almost nothing the entire year and had F’s almost all across the board. The fear of graduating High School was almost non existant.

Then there was college. An art school that was 72 hours a week of anxiety.

    I did not do well.

My symptoms exploded. It is not uncommon for people in their 20’s to get a real taste of their mental illness, because that is when things start to get really hard. When we get a taste of the amount of responsibility it is to be an adult.

    I was diagnosed with depression.

The zoloft they gave me did help with the depression but it sent me spiraling into mania. People liked me more because I was “happy”. I was happy until it dove back into an aggravated mania again. Then I was angry. Then not only was I running over with hate, I had the energy to act on it.

    “Jeez what a bitch!”

Then I crashed and became bedridden and sad.

“If only if you weren’t so lazy, if you tried harder.”

Those calm “normal” moments between symptoms were becoming rarer and rarer.

“This is hormonal you know, maybe if you ate right and exercised and took vitamins you would feel better!”

When I was nervous I ate, and I ate a lot. I gained a lot of weight. Sometimes I would stop eating, then I gained more from such inconsistent dietary patterns. Sometimes I didn’t want to leave my bed because of overwhelming depression.

My brain was causing my body to fall apart. It was causing everything to fall apart.

In ‘07 after having such a severe panic attack that my nose bled violently, I decided I wanted to see a therapist.

    Six months later.

    I saw a therapist.

I was too frightened of the idea that I was a failure, that I was sick, that I was wrong, that I would have to see a “shrink”.

I am lucky to be blessed with a wonderful therapist. A warm, kind, therapist. A therapist who took someone into her office who was crying and shaking and calmed them and offered them options and didn’t react with fear like so many had before. A therapist who will perform sessions over the phone if I am too upset to get out of bed. A therapist who will speak to my parents and explain to them what they are dealing with.

    My first psychiatrist?

    No.

My first psychiatrist was an oddly cold man who really didn’t care about what I had to say. One who made the same mistakes that many have before and looked at me, my weight, and gave me things that might help my WEIGHT and not my HEAD.

He put me on things that made bipolar people agitated. I told him that I had been diagnosed. Why was he doing this?

    I attempted suicide in ‘07.

I was sent to the hospital for three days and the amount it cost was so staggering that I didn’t go back to see my therapist or psychiatrist (nevermind that I didn’t really want to see my psych anyway)

I stayed on the medications that did nothing, in fact they made me worse.

I trundled along. I dealt with it.

Then another bad person came into my life, another awful person that shoved my head into the dirt and used my hardships against me.

    “You fucking loser!”

“Good luck making anything of yourself!”

    “You’re so fucking lazy!”

    I had a psychotic episode.

I finally returned to my warm therapist and she was disturbed to find me in that state and she insisted that I was going to see her every single week until things got stable because if things didn’t I would have to go straight to a hospital or I might die or I might kill.

So I got treatment. She talked me through it. I found a better psychiatrist. A man who specializes in bipolar disorder. He is warm he is kind he genuinely cares about my life. He carefully balances the medications that keep me going.

I don’t know why it has to be so hard to find people like this.

Doctors that aren’t shitty, who care.

I see so many people suffering who have stopped seeking treatment because their doctors didn’t care. Because their doctors spoke down to them. Because the people who should be helping them are just adding to yet another in a list of people who just don’t give a fuck, and would rather blame you for making THEM uncomfortable.

So let me just briefly stop and say that if you have the option to go see someone. PLEASE see someone. Do your research. Get some help. I don’t care if it’s a mental illness or a physical chronic condition just go out and do your research and call someone that can help you make your life a little less shitty. I’m only twenty-five and I feel like all my early opportunities have been destroyed because I did not have proper care. My story may be shocking to some but I am LUCKY. I have lived with people who have suffered and will most likely never get treatment.

    Treatment isn’t easy.

I had to take a lot of different medications to find the ones that worked. Each persons brain chemistry is different. I had to take things that made me go up and down. Fogged me up. Made me too sick to eat. Gave me the shakes. I had to take up to eight different medications at one point.

Amounts were varied. Times I had to take medications were varied. Everything was slightly adjusted each week.

It got better but it got better slowly.

I didn’t realize that I was “cured” until one day my mother announced to the family that she had cancer.

    Of course I was stunned.

    I was overwhelmed.

But I did not curl up into that same depressed ball. I did not attack myself. I could comfort her and I could help my family and that is the greatest gift I have received from all this. I am no longer in pain and I am no longer spreading my pain. I told my mom that despite how much shit we’ve been through and how much fighting has happened and that while I don’t always agree with her and we will always be very different people I love the hell out of her.

One week later we found out that the cancer was a misdiagnosis. I was relieved and I was so happy that this was only an emotional “fire drill”. That I really was ready for the worse. That life wasn’t going to crush me.

While we still have tiny ups and downs my mother and I have gotten along almost perfectly since the incident and I would not trade that for the world. She has come with me to therapy, she understands my symptoms now, and when I am being manic she no longer acts with anger but with “Hey are you taking care of yourself like you should?” Then I stop, I think, then I remember that I drank a bunch of caffeine. Whoops!

Treatment has been the best thing for me but it will never be easy.

This morning I missed work, work that I was VERY lucky to have. Work that I REALLY need right now.

Because I was suffering from lithium withdrawl.

I have been going through it the last few days and I’m shaky and I won’t eat and I can’t sleep and little whirs of thought race through my brain. This article? I’ve already thought about it, milled over it, written it in my head about 50 times.

    I cannot stop. I’m manic.

I did attempt to pick up my medication. I am very good about making sure it’s refilled properly. I do not like being off medication because I don’t like the withdrawals and the symptoms tumbling back even worse then before. I like feeling good.

So when I came to my pharmacy. They didn’t have it. They did not have the most common medication available for the mentally ill.

    Call back tomorrow.

    Maybe it will be in.

It will definately be in in two weeks though!

Cool. Two weeks. Right before I leave for a vacation I’ve been planning, scrimping, and saving for for four months. A potentially very very stressful vacation.

    Fantastic

This has happened before. It seems to have happened with every single medication I’m on. I take four different kinds consistantly. Four in the morning, three at night.

Then there are pills for pain, for anxiety, for sleeplessness. They are to be taken as needed.

My road to recovery is never ending because there is no recovery. Every day I just learn to make it a little bit easier. I learn how to deal with the crap that life throws at me. Inconsiderate people, shitty doctors, not sleeping properly. I try not to dwell on it. Most of the time I don’t think about my illness beyond “did you take your pills yet?”.

Sometimes being on treatment is obnoxious. Sometimes you will meet people who are inconsiderate. Sometimes you will be so so tired of having to take pills and to go to appointments and get blood drawn.

But it’s worth it. Because if you don’t your symptoms will grow and overwhelm you. They will hobble your life and suck the joy out of it. You will be robbed of so many opportunities.

If you can’t get treatment. Seek alternative methods. Look up things that, while they probably can’t cure, they can make things easier. Hold on. Understand your symptoms so you have a better idea of how to control them.

Do not let this beast devour you from the inside out.

    Video Blog - 12 / 06 / 11

Just another simple blog. Just letting you know what I’m up to and a short discussion of the book i’m reading ‘Run Your Butt Off’.

    Hope you’re all great! Now… F1 TIME!!!

Sleepiness makes fatty foods extra tempting

    Exercise:

    • Bike: 1 hour. Throughout the day. I did about 15 minutes in the morning and 45 at night.
    • Chest Press: 3 sets at 37.5 lbs of 15 reps.
    • Rows: 3 sets. 2 at 50 lbs for 15 reps. 1 set of 62.5 lbs for 5 reps!
    • Stretching

    Food:

    • Breakfast: Kashi go lean with a banana.
    • Lunch: Yogurtland froyo :D
    • Dinner: Stew… again.
    • Snacks: Beef jerky.

I feel like I almost didn’t eat enough calories today. It wasn’t terribly healthy :) I went realized I was pretty hungry when I went to bed but I was too tired to think much about it.

So the video said to drink lots of water before eating anything and before you start your day. 1 to 2 liters. Now I don’t know about you, but 2 liters is a looott and before I even drink that to get to breakfast it will be 3 in the afternoon.

So, I will drink a lot of water, maybe half a liter and start there, then take a vitamin or two and begin the day.

    :)

A new report published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) might make you re-think that “apple a day” — if it’s conventionally grown using pesticides.

    Dirty Dozen 2011

    1. Apples
    2. Celery
    3. Strawberries
    4. Peaches
    5. Spinach
    6. Nectarines (imported)
    7. Grapes (imported)
    8. Sweet bell peppers
    9. Potatoes
    10. Blueberries (domestic)
    11. Lettuce

The “clean fifteen” are also included in the report - these are fruits and veggies with the lowest levels of pesticides so there’s no need to waste your money on organic versions. Some popular items include watermelon and avocado.

The EWG points out that if consumers simply chose their daily recommended five servings of fruit and vegetables from the least contaminated list over five from the dirty dozen, they would reduce the amount of pesticides ingested by 92% - without having to shell out extra money for organics.

Feeling drowsier during the day because you didn’t catch enough ZZZs at night may make it easier for you to give in to temptation, suggests a preliminary study to be presented at the 2011 meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

    ….

When you don’t get the rest you need, “you might not have the ability to say no to that extra cookie or dessert,” points out Killgore, and you’re a little more likely to take in a few extra calories a day.

truth: when i don’t work out, i’m an insomniac. when i do work out, i’m a narcoleptic.

    :)

I promise not to get any more meals at Sonic for the rest of the month, and halfway into July. Just because I work there doesn’t mean I should eat there after I get off.

I promise to cut down on my junk food intake.

I promise to cut down on my soda intake.

I promise to eat more salad.

    `

Today was actually a good day, towards the end.

I woke up 8am, for no reason and felt just insanely sad. What the hell. I did some planning and organising and forced myself to nap for 2 hours to get rid of my groggy headache. I chucked on an in season outfit I was trying for the first time and it turned out great. I went to my first chiropractic appointment ever and I have to say I’m quite impressed. Firstly the reception and staff were sooo nice. We did an assessment and took some x-rays and all of the areas I have pain in were spot on identified. The pain I have in my lower back, ribs and neck are from misaligned vertebrate and fluid and stuff. Apparently one that’s twisted may even have contributed to my sinus problems. It’s all so fascinating. I have to go back tomorrow to sort out treatment and stuff.

I also have an exam tomorrow. Need to study yet. I’m hungry and freezing. My boyfriend is complaining about how shit his day was because he didn’t get to play COD, because it was too much effort to move the console to the other tv and change the settings. I’m just like…. seriously? I had to go get my deformed spine checked out at a chiropractor today, I mention I went to the chiropractor and you didn’t even ask how it went, because complaining that you didn’t get to play video games was more serious. Wow. Now we’re talking about his insurance that this company isn’t paying him from his car crash, which is actually quite serious so I don’t really think video games were the real problem. It’d be nice to actually have someone care about how my day went though, and he should know better than anyone how serious of a problem my health is to me. Ah well, doesn’t matter.

    `

    -Gabby.

The following is my rendition of the Dalai Lama’s explanation of being fully healthy.

In order to be ultimately healthy, it starts with the mind. We must be strong in our minds and be able to control ourselves when the most extraneous of circumstances occur or even the slightest at the very least. Once we’ve reached that stage, nothing is impossible.

If our mind is at its full capacity health wise, our body will respond. Conversely, if our mind is unhealthy, our body will be unhealthy. If our minds are strong, our bodies will be strong.

Nothing will get in your way once your mind is cleared and at its full potential. I’ve seen this everyday. When students and teachers are stressed, they become sick, tired and just plain old sick and tired. Only you know your body, and you must know the signs of stress or mental ailments before you can fix your own problem.

I’ve played sports all my life, and when my mind isn’t positive or being productive, my body is done for, there is no other way to fix it other than starting back with the mind.

Be aware, learn from your body, and love it for it is truly your temple.

I don’t understand. I don’t understand why people are so afraid of food.

Recent internet trawling of a procrastinator-y nature has brought to my attention the MYRIAD of obsessive weight-loss programs out there that are entirely, in my opinion, too focused on casting FOOD as the enemy.

    Food is not the enemy.

If you have a weight problem, (or even, for some people, weight at all!), you should not be typecasting such an essential, and wonderful, part of life, but instead, tackling the problem in yourself. Chances are, if you’re unhappy with your weight, you should be focussing on the part of yourself that is creating the problem, whether that might be a tendency to over-indulge, or a complete lack of exercise in your routine.

I know, it’s easier to blame others. It’s easier to blame McDonald’s and KFC, and that gorgeous butter cake that your great-aunt Mildred makes that you can never resist, but if you don’t tackle the deep-seated issue underlying, even if you do manage to, probably painfully, increase/decrease your weight to a desired number, it will just fly up/down again (depending on where your problem lies).

Chances are, it’s in your head, or in your attitude.

Also, on the other hand, to avoid type-casting, there are equally many sites that encourage their audiences to just gorge yourselves on these horribly decadent meals that are enough to turn your stomach. That is just sick. Sites like This is Why You’re Fat and EpicMealTimes on Youtube aren’t combating the influx of negative food stereotypes that come from these crazed “Get Fit! Get Healthy! Get Thin!” schemes.

Rather, they’re just advocating the problems balancing on the other end of the spectrum.

Just as obsessive avoidance of meals is unhealthy, so is binging.

Eat balanced meals. Eat healthy meals, with nutritionally balanced portions. Eat salads. Eat meat. Eat ice cream. Eat chocolate.  Just don’t eat too much or too little of any of them.

And for heaven’s sake, if you need it, just jump on the treadmill and stop blaming food.

How do you know if you have a eating disorder? This site gives a handy list of symptoms. If you have an obsession with avoiding meals or binging, SPEAK to someone about it. Or, if you’re uncomfortable, there are resources out there with your doctor, or just at home, online. Do a quick internet browse!

    Stop victimising yourselves.

Note: If you have special nutritional requirements, please PLEASE PLEASE disregard this tirade completely. Listen to your doctor. They know better.

It is not easy to make your employees stay for a long time if you are an owner of a small company. This is one thing that is hard to manage when it comes to running your own business. It is a natural way of people to always seek for jobs that can give them more benefits. They can even choose to start their own businesses as long as they have enough resources to do it.

Israel saves a man from Zanzibar’s life not once but TWICE. G-d bless Israel and Save a Child’s Heart, an Israeli non-profit organization that brings children with heart disorders to Israel for costly, innovative, and efficient heart surgery and treatment for free. A majority of the children that benefit from Save a Child’s Heart are from Muslim and Arab nations including those from Gaza, Judea, and Samaria.
