While in Paris it was recommended to take in a classical music concert at Sainte Chapelle and as it turns out the woodwind and harpsichord ensemble was almost as spectacular as the venue!
…And here’s some brief history: In 1239, Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, bought Christ’s crown of thorns from the Emperor of Constantinople, Beaudoin II. Two years later he acquired several other relics of Christ from Byzantium and decided to build a monument worthy to house his treasures within the Palais de la Cité itself.
The resulting monument was Sainte-Chapelle. The Chapel is a gem of French Gothic architecture adorned with a unique collection of wall paintings, carvings, fifteen stained glass windows and a large rose window which form a veritable wall of light. Enlightening. Literally.
