Today in Rape Culture

[Trigger warning for sexual violence; physician assault.]

I would say this is unbelievable, except, by virtue of writing about this garbage day in and day fucking out, it is all too believable: The Florida Board of Medicine has decided in a 7-3 decision that being convicted of rape should not be an impediment to practicing medicine in the state.
The board, meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, made the decision in the case of Tampa doctor Mark Seldes a former Air Force flight surgeon who was serving in South Korea when he was accused of raping a civilian co-worker [while she was unconscious]. He was convicted in a military court-martial in 2008, served 3 years in prison, and was dismissed from the service for rape and adultery. He was also forced to be registered as a sex offender, and appears in the Florida Sex Offender Registry.

...[T]he board voted 7-3 to allow Seldes to practice, so long as he completes 300 hours of community service, remains in a monitoring program for troubled physicians, and works in a government facility.

The state agreed not to put him on formal probation, after Seldes argued that probation might make it hard for him to get a job in the future.
Wow.

In 2004, brain scans showed that people taking Accutane suffer a 21 percent decrease in frontal brain activity, the part of the brain that plays a critical role in mood and social interaction. These brain changes may explain the depression, suicidal and aggressive behavior, and psychotic reactions reported by some Accutane users.

I took Acutane in high school. Maybe I would have had a better high experience without it. Looking back, I wish I had known more about food and health. If I had eaten differently, I think my skin would have been better and I never would have needed it.

purple potato eater on Flickr.

I call this dish the purple people eater.

1 lb Peruvian purple potatoes (or whatever you have on hand)
1 red onion grilled or sauteed
1 garlic clove
Parsley (or any fresh herb)
S&P
Earth Balance (or Olive Oil)
Juice of half of a lemon

As you can see this recipe is very very easy and you can adjust it to your taste.
I cleaned the potatoes and slightly boiled them, then drizzled with Olive oil and roasted (at 400 degrees.) While they are in the oven saute or grill your chopped purple onion in Olive oil or earth balance and mix in garlic at the end just to slightly heat. After removing potatoes from the oven when the are slightly brown, mix with previously grilled purple onions and garlic, then sprinkled in lemon juice, olive oil to coat (or earth balance) and fresh herbs of your choice. I used parsley in this photo. Garnish with herbs and a bit more lemon. Bon Appetit!

PS The lemon is crucial to this dish as it is what brings back the purple color when the potatoes are cooked! :)

It’s not even 11am and it already feels an eternity. So I should update you guys, not sure how many of you actually read my text posts but whatever. My boyfriend’s mom went to the hospital with sudden intense confusion. She has regained some lucidity but where she remembers some things, she forgets others.

It’s looking more permanent by the day :[ she was supposed to get an MRI yesterday so we should hear of the results from that today. It’s terrible, the boy is 23 and already lost one of his parents last July. Losing both parents in just a year…I can’t even imagine. I am just so thankful I could be here for him.

Please put him and his mum in your thoughts guys, and put that positive and healing energy out there. They really need it right now.

Bottom line: We don’t know the real risks of excessive cell phone use to our health. There is simply insufficient evidence to make a firmer statement than what the WHO has made with their “may be linked to cancer” report.

I like this video from CNN with Anderson Cooper because it does discuss a very simple and real prevention action: use an earpiece.

I’m making my own meals now! I never cooked before this…Wicked rad! I’m making stir fry with a bunch of veggies and chicken. Yum!

CAN YOU SAY BOOKED!?

That’s my schedule filled with running club, dragon boat racing club, work, etc…

And I didn’t even factor in my 1/2 marathon training sched!

AWESOME!!!

I just finished some nice breakfast. Blueberry pancakes. (if you can’t tell I’ve been craving pancakes lately.)

The recipe is:

1/2 cup uncooked oats

1/2 blueberries

1 tablespoon honey

1 egg

Just blend it together and let it thicken. Sometimes I put it in the fridge overnight and make it in the morning. It is super delicous! I won’t lie though, it isn’t totally a pancake you can say, but made similar. Tastes great though, believe. Expecially if you love blueberries!

As for the workout today, I may just go for a jog. Because today is my off day and after kicking ass all week, I believe bodies deserve rest.

BUT that doesn’t mean I need to sit on my butt all day! After work I am definitely enjoying this beautiful day.

Vicky surprised me this morning by making a fried breakfast, complete with HUGE Yorkie Pudds!

Decided to take a rest day :]

Mnemonics:

Remember, guys, Oh Oh Oh To Tpuch And Feel Virgin Girls’ Vaginas and Hymens!

This is definitely true. I need to eat about 5 times a day, otherwise I’m starving if I only eat 3 meals a day.

So tonight, I fed Phin a bit of peanut butter and he started choking and gasping for air. I broke several laws speeding us down to the local vet while Dom and his amazing person gave phinny CPR. They put him in an oxygen chamber and managed to unblock his airways with some cotton swabs. We’re home now, he’s breathing, and Dom and I are keeping a close eye on him. I’ve also never earned a beer more than I have just now.

Also, and incredible thank you to the people at the Birarcliff Animal Hospital for being the only place in Atlanta open this late, and still helping us during our emergency despite their exotic specialist not being in that day.

So this is the book I have been reading today. It’s called Comfortably Unaware by Dr. Richard A. Oppenlander. What this book is about is about making us aware of how the choices we make concerning what we eat, whether we believe or not, is contributing to the issue of Global Warming. Aside from making us aware on how our eating habits have an affect on global warming it is also giving an insight on a much healthier way of eating that is not only good for us but our environment. I highly recommend this book.

Health - Die Slow

I went with MARY (http://marywanderingagain.tumblr.com/)! and Brooke (http://inksweat.tumblr.com/)

We did lots of abs (I planks! Twice! For a minute each!)  a little bit of legs, wall sits (death) and some arms. We also went to a zumba class. Great cardio, but I won’t be going back…. haha.

It was a great first-day-back-to-the-gym-in-forever workout!

Health Drinks Are Truly Healthy When They Are Alkaline:

Terry Pratchett initiates assisted suicide process:

Beloved science fiction and fantasy writer Terry Pratchett has terminal early-onset Alzheimer’s. He’s determined to have the option of choosing the time and place of his death, rather than enduring the potentially horrific drawn-out death that Alzheimer’s sometimes brings.

But Britain bans assisted suicide, and Pratchett is campaigning to have the law changed. As part of this, he has visited Switzerland’s Dignitas clinic, an assisted suicide facility, with a BBC camera crew, as part of a documentary will include Britain’s first televised suicide. Pratchett took home Dignitas’s assisted suicide consent forms.

I had to back out of getting Raiki, something that calms me down, because I’m too scared of actually going to the place to get it done. My social anxiety disorder attacks me each time I think about going, because the majority of people who go to this alternative therapy centre are elderly and… Well, let’s admit it. Old people are nosey and stare a lot. Staring is one of my triggers, which makes me panic and feel very sick.

Eh…

I hope the hospital contacts me about the specialists I’m supposed to see, as it has been months now. You’d think if someone’s health has caused them to drop out of college and be on sickness benefit, they’d sort it out. :c

From grungy to chic

I don’t think people understand that not eating actually does your body more harm than good. Diet in a healthier way.

It has been a long while since I have written anything in this blog about fitness.So I think that is what I will do before heading off to bed.I managed to get to the gym today to do a three hour session before doing other things.Normally I don’t work out for three hours but as with my body,it is taking longer for it to recover since I have reached 40 years old this month and which makes me suitable for an EKG test since at my ago I have a greater risked for a heart attack.But anyway getting back to the workout,I only did some light weights today just so that I can strengthen my left shoulder and do more cardio in the process because I think that the cake I ate last night really put on the pounds on my frame.Which made it harder for me to burn it off completely.I still have more work to do tomorrow or this morning in order for this cake to disappear from my belly and my thighs because cake,especially white cake which probably has a lot of chemicals in it.Chocolate cake probably has more chemicals than the white cake.Of course carrot cake contains a lot of calories.I didn’t head off to the gym that Sunday but I did get a yoga session in that Sunday which was good.

Breast cancer trial: New drug lowers risk for at-risk patients

  • 65%decreased risk after taking hormone-blocking pill source

» A huge step forward: The study, which involved 4,500 people, represents progress towards a safe-to-take drug that prevents breast cancer in at-risk patients. While anti-estrogen drugs already exist on the market, they’ve had pretty horrific side effects that discourage their use. So far, aromatase inhibitors don’t have any of these side effects — but it’s important to note that there haven’t been long-term studies with this, either. (This is the first time researchers tested an aromatase inhibitor tested clinically.) However, it’s still encouraging and worth keeping an eye on.

“The food pyramid is dead. Long live the plate!

“The food pyramid is dead. Long live the plate!

The USDA today announced the latest attempt to conceptualize the government’s dietary advice in a way consumers can understand.

Half of the plate is made up of fruits and vegetables and the other half grains and protein, with the sections for vegetables and grains slightly bigger than those for fruits and protein. Off to the side is a cup representing milk or other dairy product.”

—

I’m not sure this will have any observable effect on dietary habits of the American public, but simplifying nutrition recommendations is certainly a step in the right direction.  The food pyramid (the previous model used to illuminate portion distribution) was unnecessarily complex and made patient teaching harder.  I would print out the pyramid for my patients and they would immediately lose interest in what I was saying - a balanced diet seemed too complex and not for them.

This simple diagram will be a easier way for patient’s to reflect on their current diets and also to model future meals.

Of course, I love the advice Michael Pollan (well-know food intellectual, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma) gives “Eat food. Not too Much. Mostly plants.”

He offers an impressively simple solution to one our nation’s more challenging questions - what do we need to eat to be optimally heathy? Or for most people, what to we need to eat to be healthier than we are right now.

Top 5 Don'ts for Primary Care Docs

Top 5 Don'ts for Primary Care Docs:

I’ve always been against most routine mass screening…nice to read: “The authors urged doctors not to perform bone-density scans on women younger than 65 and men younger than 70 who have no risk factors for osteoporosis. The researchers also urged physicians to forgo basic blood screening in healthy adults (though screening for cholesterol was recommended, as was diabetes screening in some cases).”

The Radical Notion That Doctors Are People, Too [Psychology Today]

The Radical Notion That Doctors Are People, Too [Psychology Today]:

Medicine

I completely understand the argument. As doctors, people with lives on their hands, of course we expect them to be “different”. Someone who is better than us, smarter than us, more knowledgable than us. But what we fail to realize as patients alot of the times that they themselves too are only human, prove to error and mistakes. They are only “human”, the cliche goes. And wouldn’t you want doctors to be well rested and well adjusted in their personal lives. That way, they are better people and thus better doctors. I understand the flip side of things but I believe doctors, even more so than us patients, deserve a life. After a stressful day at work, everyone wants to return to a loving family. Imagine a day where many lives hinge on your ingenuity and intelligence, THAT is stressful. I, for one, would just like to say thank to all the doctors, nurses and health care practitioners out there. Thank you for keeping us safe and sacrificing your lives in the process.

This is what happens when you go to Mozambique...

What happens is, you have to pay 60€ for a Visa, take 4 vacinnes, plus pay almost 70€ por medicine, that most of them you only take them IF you get sick. Oh yeah believe me I cried, I cried when the Lady from the Pharmacy told me the proce of the medicine.

The one medicine that I HAVE to take without missing, is Mephaquin (Mefloquina), I have to take once a week, starting this week (one week before travelling), the 4 weeks that I'll be there, and then continuing taking for 4 more weeks after I come back to Portugal.
- Domperidona - In case I feel Nausea or Vomit;
- Loperamida - In case I have Diarrhea -_- ;
- Ciprofloxacina - In case de Loperamida doesn't work, I take these ones that are stonger;
- Redrate - Oral Salts for Hydration , in case I get dehydrated;
- Paracetamol - In case I get a fever;
- Dexaval (Dexametasona) - A cream in case I GET bitten by something,
- Previpiq - An insect repellent, that I have to put on my body thats is not covered by clothes to protect me from the insects (like mosquitos) so they DON'T bite me and suck my blooooood lol.

Besides all these shenanigans, I took 4 vaccines, one of them was repeated (Hipatite A) I had to take 2 shots, the 1st one was in October, and the 2nd shot you take a month later, and I took it today.
The first time I took the Hipatite A vaccine, I took another 2, yeah 3 shots in one day, mega cocktail, and yes as a secundary effect I had a fever. And when it came, it came HARD >.<

I should start packing now.... but I'm feeling lazy, I hate packing BAH, I never know if what I'm taking is enough, or if I'm gonna need it >.<
