Located just blocks from the heart of Downtown Athens and the University of Georgia campus, Hotel Indigo-Athens guests are able to enjoy outstanding service, contemporary ambiance and environmental awareness.  Innovative design throughout the hotel is combined with features that are reflective our local community.  Athens boasts a vibrant art and music scene, a top rated state university well known for both its academic and athletic accomplishments as well as a Downtown District made up of unique, locally owned shops, restaurants and businesses.  The result is that Athens is an eclectic mixture of progressiveness tempered by a sense of history, a global perspective with a focus on local sustainability, while maintaining a small town vibe.

A longtime hub for musicians, Athens has been called home by many well known bands including REM, the B52’s, Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic and more recently The Drive by Truckers, The Whigs  and Of Montreal.  Athens is also well known for its music venues.  The 40 Watt Club is among the most famous indie rock venues on the East Coast.  The Georgia Theatre, which burned in 2009 and is slated to reopen Summer 2011, along with lesser known clubs like Caledonia Lounge have hosted countless national acts.  With an appreciation of Athens’ rich musical history, Hotel Indigo-Athens was built with a connecting music venue, The Rialto Room, that has been touted as the Southeast region’s premiere listening room.  The size of the room and excellent acoustics create an intimate experience for audience members.  Hotel Indigo-Athens also hosts weekly live music featuring local musicians each Thursday during “Live After Five”.  Our guests enjoy the complimentary music offering, but it has become a popular event with locals as well.

Athens is home to many artists and art enthusiasts alike.  The Georgia Museum of Art, The Lyndon House Arts Center as well as the presence of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA all contribute to Athens’ creative culture.  Downtown restaurants and coffee shops regularly display the work of local artists.  Following in this vein, Hotel Indigo-Athens has embraced local artists by housing an Art Gallery within the hotel curated by Mercury Artworks.  Guest rooms feature oversized locally-reflective photo murals of native flowers found in a nearby garden.  Colorful band posters from local musical acts were designed and printed in Athens and framed by a local artisan using reclaimed barn wood.

Another well known draw to Athens is The University of Georgia.  Founded in 1785, it is the oldest and largest of the state’s institutions of higher learning and is the oldest public university in the United States.  While The University of Georgia enjoys a reputable academic standing it also holds it owns in the athletics department.  The Georgia Bulldogs athletic teams have won thirty-seven national championships and 130 conference championships.  With an enrollment of over 35,000 each year, Athens benefits from the youthful energy of its student population and the job opportunities provided make UGA the largest employer in this relatively small city.

Athens has also established itself as an eco-friendly community.   The cycling community is encouraged with dedicated cycling lanes and the annual Twilight Criterium speed race held in Downtown Athens.  Athens-Clarke County began Georgia’s first municipally operated residential curbside recycling program and has earned national attention for its city and university bus systems.  Hotel Indigo-Athens has furthered Athens green reputation by becoming the 12th LEED Gold certified hotel in the world.  Environmentally friendly features such as an outdoor cistern that collects HVAC condensation for reuse to irrigate outdoor landscaping, regenerative elevators, a highly efficient heating and cooling system as well as a master switch system in guest rooms that control lighting are only a few of the ways the hotel promotes sustainability.  Our restaurant, The Madison Bar and Bistro, sources locally and we promote alternative means of transportation by offering priority parking for hybrid vehicles and carpoolers along with bicycle racks and a public transportation hub on property.

About our Front Desk imagery:

Our Front Desk imagery features the photography of local artist, Rinne Allen.  The art guitar was painted by Lou Kregel, who resided in Athens for a number of years and has a large following of admirers in the area.  Kregel studied textile design under internationally acclaimed fiber artist Shigeko Spear at the University of North Texas.  Her published works include album art for Sugar (“File Under:Easy Listening”), James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins (“Let It Come Down”), Azure Ray, papercranes, tour merchandise for R.E.M., and featured in music videos by Snoop Dogg (“Lay Low”), and Slimm Calhoun of Outkast.  Her work can also be found in several Downtown Athens restaurants.  The instrument itself is a Gretsch Guitar.  The company’s operations center is based in Savannah, Georgia.

morning blues (by Tim Gerdts)

I almost forgot!

SO, I've decided Fall 2012 I'm going to directly apply as an International Student to British Isle Universities

I am going to marry someone Irish for their accent.

“I can’t even remember what answers I got it’s all a blur at this stage! But I don’t care anymore I can’t change it now and everyone in the whole country thought it was a pile of crap so maybe they’ll be forced to compensate by marking it easier. Roll on paper 2 so I can be finished maths forever.”

And it sounds quite calm and forward thinking but after the exam I was quite upset. It would have been bad enough for it to go so badly and that to be the end of it, but I still have to try and do paper 2 on Monday.
Some colleges have it as a requirement to pass maths to get in as well so if I have failed, I’m looking at limited options as even if I do really well on Monday (ha!) you have to pass both papers to pass overall.

I’m just gonna stop thinking about it now and hope for the best.

Ireland does not do sales tax. When I bought my phone, the price was 20E, so, being an American, I had out a 20 note and some change, thinking that 20E would not be enough to pay for something marked 20E, because it wouldn’t be in the states. When he said “twenty euros” I handed him the bill and he took it. It felt really strange to me. In American, when something is $20, it’s really something like $20.13, so you have to hand them a twenty and a one and get a bunch of useless coins back. I’m so used to that kind of payment exchange that it felt really bizarre to just hand the guy one bill and have that be it. It’s hard to explain how twilight-zone that felt. If you had told me before I left that I would feel very strangely out of place when paying for things without sales tax, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I was so startled by the whole thing that I said “is that all?” and he said “what?” and I asked “there’s no sales tax?” and he said “what is that?” and I said “well in America when something is 20 dollars it’s actually 20 dollars and some cents” and he said “why?” and I said “the government?” and then he got this look of recognition on his face and said “oh, we wondered when we were in America why they always wanted some extra little bit of change, it was annoying,” and his buddy said “yeah that’s an American thing, we don’t do that” and I said that it was so fantastically convenient to just hand over one bill and have no one counting out change and he smiled and said yes it was grand. Score one for Ireland. Later I bought something else and it was the same deal. It feels so much cleaner and neater to buy something for 10E, hand them a 50 note and just get two twenties back.

““Don Broco - undoubtedly the next big thing in UK rock, Don Broco absolutely ripped apart the Kerrang! Introducing Stage, and rebuilt it using their super-slick brand of discord, vocal harmony and a stage presence that can’t be described and do it justice (or photographed - I tried). A huge, huge name to watch out for.””

I’ve got a 4.0, or 98-100% course grades.

I’m a Sociology major.

I’m not very competitive in extracirricular activities since I don’t participate in sports and I volunteer mainly within Catholic Charities.

I’m looking for somewhere with tuition under $30,000 a year if possible

P.S. LET ME KNOW SOME GOOD PLACES, YEAH?!

"I can see the fuckin future!"

Ireland

Growing up...Irish language theatre - is it time to stage a revival?:

While spoken Irish is encouraged in many sectors of society, theatre seems to be lagging behind in staging Irish language productions, but there are hopeful signs for the future, writes Caomhan Keane. (click headline/title to read more)

They always fall apart.

Just do stuff on the spur of the moment.

I’m going to fly to Ireland. Don’t know when.

Just when I get bored. Then I’ll see what happens when I’m there.

Sounds like fun to me.

My New Love

A black H&M bag that I bought last sunday.
Last Sunday after going to a Ikea with a colleague of mine from work, Plamina, I was on a mission to find a new bag. So here in Prague I went to New Yorker, Zara, Next (which sucks alot here, in the U.K. is much better), plus other shops... but it was in H&M where I found this baby. I admit it wasn't love at first sight exactly, but I really needed it a new bag. Don't get me wrong I love my River Island bag, but the problem is that it doesn't have a zipper, so in those rush hours in the public transport, someone can put their hand inside the bag, algo is not good for my back if I carry to much weight on one side of my shoulder, and it has 2 straps, but one is always falling off, which very annoying -_-, but still I love that bag.... 'cause it has a skull HAHA.
Anyways, I saw this bag, it's black so it goes it mostly everything, the style pleased me, and I can carry on my hand, or with the long strap. So I bought it, 599 CZ. I actually started to fall in Love with the bag on the next day, haha go figure...
