Located just blocks from the heart of Downtown Athens and the University of Georgia campus, Hotel Indigo-Athens guests are able to enjoy outstanding service, contemporary ambiance and environmental awareness. A longtime hub for musicians, Athens has been called home by many well known bands including REM, the B52’s, Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic and more recently The Drive by Truckers, The Whigs and Of Montreal. Athens is also well known for its music venues. The 40 Watt Club is among the most famous indie rock venues on the East Coast. The Georgia Theatre, which burned in 2009 and is slated to reopen Summer 2011, along with lesser known clubs like Caledonia Lounge have hosted countless national acts. With an appreciation of Athens’ rich musical history, Hotel Indigo-Athens was built with a connecting music venue, The Rialto Room, that has been touted as the Southeast region’s premiere listening room. The size of the room and excellent acoustics create an intimate experience for audience members. Hotel Indigo-Athens also hosts weekly live music featuring local musicians each Thursday during “Live After Five”. Our guests enjoy the complimentary music offering, but it has become a popular event with locals as well.
Athens is home to many artists and art enthusiasts alike. The Georgia Museum of Art, The Lyndon House Arts Center as well as the presence of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA all contribute to Athens’ creative culture. Downtown restaurants and coffee shops regularly display the work of local artists. Following in this vein, Hotel Indigo-Athens has embraced local artists by housing an Art Gallery within the hotel curated by Mercury Artworks. Guest rooms feature oversized locally-reflective photo murals of native flowers found in a nearby garden. Colorful band posters from local musical acts were designed and printed in Athens and framed by a local artisan using reclaimed barn wood.
Another well known draw to Athens is The University of Georgia. Founded in 1785, it is the oldest and largest of the state’s institutions of higher learning and is the oldest public university in the United States. While The University of Georgia enjoys a reputable academic standing it also holds it owns in the athletics department. The Georgia Bulldogs athletic teams have won thirty-seven national championships and 130 conference championships. With an enrollment of over 35,000 each year, Athens benefits from the youthful energy of its student population and the job opportunities provided make UGA the largest employer in this relatively small city.
Athens has also established itself as an eco-friendly community. The cycling community is encouraged with dedicated cycling lanes and the annual Twilight Criterium speed race held in Downtown Athens. Athens-Clarke County began Georgia’s first municipally operated residential curbside recycling program and has earned national attention for its city and university bus systems. Hotel Indigo-Athens has furthered Athens green reputation by becoming the 12th LEED Gold certified hotel in the world. Environmentally friendly features such as an outdoor cistern that collects HVAC condensation for reuse to irrigate outdoor landscaping, regenerative elevators, a highly efficient heating and cooling system as well as a master switch system in guest rooms that control lighting are only a few of the ways the hotel promotes sustainability. Our restaurant, The Madison Bar and Bistro, sources locally and we promote alternative means of transportation by offering priority parking for hybrid vehicles and carpoolers along with bicycle racks and a public transportation hub on property.

Our Front Desk imagery features the photography of local artist, Rinne Allen. The art guitar was painted by Lou Kregel, who resided in Athens for a number of years and has a large following of admirers in the area. Kregel studied textile design under internationally acclaimed fiber artist Shigeko Spear at the University of North Texas. Her published works include album art for Sugar (“File Under:Easy Listening”), James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins (“Let It Come Down”), Azure Ray, papercranes, tour merchandise for R.E.M., and featured in music videos by Snoop Dogg (“Lay Low”), and Slimm Calhoun of Outkast. Her work can also be found in several Downtown Athens restaurants. The instrument itself is a Gretsch Guitar. The company’s operations center is based in Savannah, Georgia.
