Want to buy a bra that protects your health as well as cleavage? Women will soon be able to buy a “smart bra” that is able to detect early-stage breast cancer. Recent innovations in the science of thermography and its use in detecting breast cancer may lead to apparel items such as bras being used as a early-warning signal.

This smart bra was invented by Dr. Elias Siores, Ph.D., who holds the position of Director at the Centre for Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton in the United Kingdom. So how does it work? The bra uses a microwave antennae system integrated into the fabric of the bra, which detects abnormalities such as temperature changes in breasts.

Temperature changes represent increased blood flow which may indicated the development of tumors related to breast cancer. As these tumors grow, there is a higher demand for blood flow, which would then alert the user via the bra. The bra would then warn the user to seek medical consultation.

Work still needs to be done to increase the accuracy of the device, as there are many reasons for an increase in blood flow. However, Dr. Siores believes this technology is viable and is currently working to increase the sensitivity of the new technology in order to better distinguish tumor development from more benign reasons. I have no doubt this technology would be extremely popular and beneficial to women.

So I was eating a gigantic piece of chocolate when…

I saw that the latest catalogue for Anthropologie had arrived. Naturally, I’m too poor to get anything from there that is not on sale, but I started perusing through potential fall bargains in the June edition of: “if only you were rich.” When suddenly, I came across this photo. This girl looks so elegant. And LOOK! She’s eating something! Granted, she’s probably not actually eating whatever this is. So, to make a long story short, I saw this picture, put the damn chocolate back, and walked upstairs. That’s true inspiration for ya.

Here’s the full catalogue if you find yourself stuffing some food in your mouth on this fine evening:

    http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/category.jsp?navAction=jump&viewall=true&id=CLOTHES-CATALOG3&cm_re=May_11-_-053011_hmpg_catalog-_-catalog1

Woot! I celebrated by eating a chocolate donut, a small piece of berry crumb cake, a chocolate chipper from Panera, and an iced grande cinnamon dolce latte. And half a bag of cheddar popcorn.

Don’t worry, there was some space between these things. A couple minutes, at least.

they’re called mio, and they’re really neat! they take your heart rate, tell you how many calories and grams of fat you burn in a workout, how many minutes you spend in, above and below your target heart rate and your average and max heart rates during a workout! the best part is, if you touch and hold the outside of the watch face, it takes your heart rate right there! it also connects to the computer with this chest strap thing and you can upload all of the information to a website.

hopefully i can have it all worked out by friday, because there’s a big pile of instructions i still need to read!

The Boss is having a rough night. She’s thrown up four times in the last six hours, and she has a slight fever. So far, no bloody stool or eardrum-rupturing screams. Just a kid who’s too hungry to sleep yet too sick to eat or nurse.

    I hope she’ll be okay.

Today wasn’t too terrible, health wise. For breakfast, I had two slices of ham and a pickle (we were all out of eggs). Lunch: chef salad with low calorie/low fat dressing. It was a very scrumptious salad, I’ll be having another one later. I had some pistachios for a snack, and a lemon-pepper pork chop and green beans for dinner. For dessert, I had honey roasted peanuts, and thought I was doing quite excellently until my dad gave me cherry pie and vanilla ice cream. I didn’t want to be rude, since it was so sweet of him to make it for me, so I had it. Dessert has always been my weakness. Overall, I think it was a good day.

Something that’s been helping me is thinking, “Would I rather have this now or be skinny later?” And more often than not the answer it in favor of the latter. Another thing that was helpful was thinking of my daily carbohydrate allowance as money. Do I want to spend that ‘money’ on potatoes at dinner, or on ice cream at dessert? Since I’m a fan of dessert, the answer is almost always in favor of ice cream. :P

Hopefully tomorrow will be another good day! I’m feeling optimistic about the future. I hope you are too.

Today was a very big slab of proof in just how far my body has come since moving to NYC. Yesterday, inspired by an episode of Anthony Bourdain trekking around Boston, I ordered a pastrami sandwich after work in a nearby deli. Oh my fucking god, was that thing full of meat. It looked more like a cave where a small monster could hide out, rather than a sandwich. I ate it with relish, over stuffing myself, but enjoying the taste anyway. I sincerely regretted that decision however, at 2 in the morning trying to go to sleep with a lump of meat in my tummy. If I’d been in Orlando, this wouldn’t have been a problem. My bedroom was built within the garage, where we kept an extra fridge for all of our food. So I often fell asleep in high school and my early college years, after self medicating with slabs of meat, potatoes, sugary drinks, and whatever else I could get my hands on. I went to sleep better with food in my belly.

But those days are far over. My bedroom now lies 3 stories high of any food source, and I took up dog walking as a job which did an immense job of exhausting my body in all the right ways. My cousin also doesn’t eat a lot of red meat, so most of my diet turned into heavy vegetables, and fruits. The occasional fish or chicken, maybe turkey pops in too. Slowly but surely my body changed gears, and I happily went along with it. Seeing how much ‘damage’ one pastrami sandwich could do to my mood/body chemistry/sleep habits really sort of shook me up and made me appreciate all the changes I’ve been able to make for myself.

    Man, I love New York.

So this evening, I went and took a nice jog/walk over to my local park. I managed to jog the WHOLE way there (super impressive), and I made a lap around, and surprised myself again by deciding to make another lap. I had to only walk that one though, because my core muscles were kicking up a storm and making it hard to breathe.

Ugh, my life. Such in a good place. Years ago I would have never imagined my stringing praises of physical exercise. It’s taken me a while to get where I am and appreciate it now, but it’s been all worth it. When I run, swim, walk, or do yoga, I think, “This isn’t just for me. This is for my kids, my future self, my family, or the person who might one day get my organs when I die.” I don’t just do it for me, I do it in a communal sense. And cause it just damn well feels good by the end of it. Even though the first 5-10 minutes can be fucking wack and I feel miserable. But it picks up after that!

    Photo

I’m making my own meals now! I never cooked before this…Wicked rad! I’m making stir fry with a bunch of veggies and chicken. Yum!

    CAN YOU SAY BOOKED!?

That’s my schedule filled with running club, dragon boat racing club, work, etc…

And I didn’t even factor in my 1/2 marathon training sched!

    AWESOME!!!

    - Adelle Davis

I just finished some nice breakfast. Blueberry pancakes. (if you can’t tell I’ve been craving pancakes lately.)

    The recipe is:

    1/2 cup uncooked oats

    1/2 blueberries

    1 tablespoon honey

    1 egg

Just blend it together and let it thicken. Sometimes I put it in the fridge overnight and make it in the morning. It is super delicous! I won’t lie though, it isn’t totally a pancake you can say, but made similar. Tastes great though, believe. Expecially if you love blueberries!

As for the workout today, I may just go for a jog. Because today is my off day and after kicking ass all week, I believe bodies deserve rest.

BUT that doesn’t mean I need to sit on my butt all day! After work I am definitely enjoying this beautiful day.

I found this inspirational list on MamaVision’s blog
Found this list on Facebook written by Sarah and wanted to share. This just struck me as a really cool idea…add thoughts as they come about and read through them to reinforce positive reality. See list in process here

-Move forward eagerly, while embracing the now.

-I am free to choose to live as I wish and to give priority to my desires.

-Remember that your body only is not you. The sum of who you are is more important than your body.

-I’ll definitely remember who Stephen Hawking is – but not who won Miss Universe’s last contest.

-I am thankful for all the parts of my body that function correctly

-I appreciate all the movements that my body let me perform

-I am thankful for being able to touch, see, smell, hear and taste

-“I don’t ask for more: the sky above me and the path under my feet.”Robert Louis Stevenson

-Our physical body is a key part of our existence.

    -I listen to my intuition.

She’s a marathon runner (on and off mostly since she’s in school now) and usually runs San Diego’s Rock n Roll Marathon, but couldn’t this year due to school. And we were saying how we should get my dad to run it next year since he’s lost like 15 pounds now since he stopped drinking. Then I said I would run it, the half marathon at least. And at first I was just kinda joking around and saying it, but now I think I should really stick with this goal. I want to start training and maybe I could actually run/walk the half marathon next year. I’m gonna have to really train though because right now I can only run/walk like half a mile to a mile, and a half marathon is 13.1 miles. But I have until next summer. So I’m going to try my hardest to get there! If any of you are training for races or marathons, tips would be very much appreciated on how to get started training and where I should be running wise at certain points in the year I have to train.

    Help?

Today was the first day of my new, and hopefully permanent, lifestyle change. Well, almost. I’ve already been working on eating healthier, but I haven’t been as committed to exercise. So today, I woke up at 7:30 and got my fitness on!

Goal: Healthy, Happy, Beautiful. I want to be in my best physical condition; I want to have a flat sexy tummy before Micah comes home in approx. 3 months.

HEALTH - Tabloid Sores (Nosaj Thing Rmx)

Being on a low-carb diet means that your protein sources have to be as low in carbs as anything else you eat. If you eat meat, for example, you can only eat it breaded and fried if the breading is low-carb. The same goes for meatloaf, which typically has many more carbs than you would suspect. Not all meat is carb-free by itself, either. Read on to learn how to choose the protein sources you need without the carbs you don’t.

-If you eat meat, most cuts of beef, pork, poultry and lamb have less than a carb per serving. How you cook or prepare them can change that, however. Avoid any kind of liver or any internal organs, like chicken giblets. With the exception of ricotta, cottage cheese and Gjetost (or Brunost, as this brown Norwegian cheese is also called), cheese is also a good low-carb source of protein.

-If you eat fish and seafood, fish has no carbs. Seafood can, however. Oysters, mussles, clams and abalone can have the most. Still, the carb content for a modest serving is low. For example, 3 oz. of cooked Pacific oysters has 8.4 carbs.

-If you do not eat meat, fish, or seafood, try seitan. It has the highest amount of protein of the vegetarian meat substitutes. Plus, it is a good source of iron and has little fat and no cholesterol. You can make seitan at home; but you can also buy it at a natural foods store. Use it as you would beef. You can buy a chicken-flavored seitan, as well. Another good source of protein is tofu.

-Drink soy milk for extra protein. Choose one without sweetening so that you can have the benefits of soy protein without unnecessary carbs.

-Don’t forget to eat your vegetables. They have protein, too. Beans and peas have as much protein as the same amount of tofu. Broccoli and asparagus have half as much protein as the same amount of tofu.

While the Congressional Budget Office has said that only 7 percent of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) will have to switch to subsidized-exchange policies in 2014, a McKinsey survey which included more than 1,300 employers found that about 30 percent of employers will definitely or probably stop offering ESI after 2014, when Affordable Care Act will come into effect. The survey also found that at least 30 percent of employers would gain financially if they did not offer ESI benefits, and more than 85 percent of employees would remain at their jobs even if their employer stopped offering ESI, although about 60 percent would expect increased compensation.

Lunch: baked chicken, salad leaves, chorizo, onion and nandos sauce. Yum, nandos sauce is so good on salad if you like spicy food :)

I’m inclined to disagree with you knowing how to abandon a food, considering meat is different than cheese - meat doesn’t have casein. Casein is the milk protein that you’re addicted to.

We do deal with a lot, as vegans, and I commiserate with what you’re saying about getting shit from friends - I find that people being unsupportive of my diet, even though it’s no concern of theirs and doesn’t hinder their lives in any way, is the only hard part of this lifestyle for me. You know what, though? I don’t have any friends who say it’s stupid, because no ‘friend’ wouldn’t take the time to try and understand a life and moral change like veganism that literally hurts no one. If your ‘friends’ are being called stupid and aren’t willing to support you in something you care about, it’s really high time to get some new friends.

As for keeping up with everything, I’m not sure what to tell you - yes, there’s a lot of ingredient-reading in veganism. Yeah, there’s a lot of explaining. Worse, there’s a lot of substituting, especially when you find out our favorite alcoholic drink or shampoo, etcetera, isn’t vegan. But you do it because living cruelty-free means more to you than convenience and hopefully someday (as it’s been starting for years and years) veganism will be as convenient as an omnivore diet. We already have so many amazing products that make our lives easier (one being Daiya, obviously) and the list goes on from there. This day and age, it’s not hard to be a vegan - it’s just mind over matter.

Vegansoapbox has a list of how to get cheese out of your diet - I’ll throw it in for good measure: http://www.vegansoapbox.com/i-cant-live-without-cheese/

    Fitness Fun Fact:

I love double and sometimes quadruple dating. My boyfriend and I have so much fun hanging out and connecting with our friends. This more than likely ends up with us all meeting up to go out to dinner to catch up or heading to the movies together and ordering the popcorn. Last night, we changed that. We met up with my best friend and her fiancée at the park last night! We laced up our shoes and went for a 2 mile jog/run. Afterwards, we raced each other to see who was faster in the park parking lot(of course my boyfriend and I won!). It was a different type of meet up but we all had a blast and the best part: we burned calories and drank water instead of consuming calories with food and alcohol. This is just one of the things that we have done together fitness wise. As a matter of fact, my boyfriend and I are actually in a competition with my best friend and her fiancée!  Two weeks ago, we took before pics together. The couple who has made the most improvement at the end of July will receive a prize from the other couple! Cool, huh? It’s funny because the men are so competitive that in return they have been pushing my best friend and I to work that much harder. So fitness fact of the day is, include your friends in your fitness goals. You will have fun and all get healthier at the same time. Now that’s what I call a win win situation!

My grammar maybe really lousy today and I am also not sure why that is. All I can say is that i am really excited about strength training lately and it gets worse everyday I work because I may do a couple of pull-ups and get one more every time I try just teasing me to get just one more.

I need to definitely start getting into more advanced routines and move along…..

So what advanced techniques should I do?

Today there are so many things that are made out of plastic and many things that we eat and drink come in plastic packaging. The increased awareness of the harmful chemicals in plastics is causing concern and it is important to understand which plastics are safe and harmful. So, how do we determine which are the safe plastics and which ones we should try not to use? It is important to understand the types of plastics. All plastics are identified by a code numbered 1 through 7 that is typically located on the bottom of the packaging with the famous recycling triangle around it. The next time you use plastic (or buy canned food for your bomb shelter), pay attention to the following numbers to know what to avoid:

1 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) Used to make soft drink, water, sports drink, ketchup, salad dressing bottles, peanut butter, pickle, jelly and jam jars.
BAD: Due to antimony leaching although many sources will say it is ok for one time use.

2 High density polyethylene (HDPE) Milk, water, and juice bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, cereal box liners, and grocery, trash, and retail bags.
GOOD: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

3 Polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC) Most cling-wrapped meats, cheeses, and other foods sold in delicatessens and groceries are wrapped in PVC.
BAD: To soften into its flexible form, manufacturers add “plasticizers” during production. Traces of these chemicals can leach out of PVC when in contact with foods. According to the National Institutes of Health, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), commonly found in PVC, is a suspected human carcinogen.

4 Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) Some bread and frozen food bags and squeezable bottles.
OK: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones, but not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.

5 Polypropylene (PP) Some ketchup bottles and yogurt and margarine tubs.
OK: Hazardous during production, but not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. Not as widely recycled as #1 and #2.

6 Polystyrene (PS) Foam insulation and also for hard applications (e.g. cups, some toys)
BAD: Benzene (material used in production) is a known human carcinogen. Butadiene and styrene (the basic building block of the plastic) are suspected carcinogens. Energy intensive and poor recycling.

7 Other (usually polycarbonate) Baby bottles, microwave ovenware, eating utensils, plastic coating for metal cans.
BAD: Made with biphenyl-A, a chemical invented in the 1930s in search for synthetic estrogens. A hormone disruptor. Simulates the action of estrogen when tested in human breast cancer studies. Can leach into food as product ages.

This can be seen in nature. Animals usually eat one food, and one food only, until they’re full. There are no “recipes” containing 5+ ingredients in nature.

    Benefits:

    • Optimal digestion, absorption, and assimilation
    • Better able to recognize when you are satiated
    • Enhances your senses, so that you’re able to pick up specific tastes in your food
    • Helps you avoid addiction to stimulation and overeating
    • Doesn’t leave you tired and dull, instead: Awake, Clear head!
    • Simplicity. Preparation is as easy as cutting a watermelon in half and eating it with a fork.

    Examples:

    • 4 Bananas (480 calories)
    • 3 Mangos (390 calories)
    • 1/4 of a Watermelon (340 calories)

It might take some time for your stomach to adjust to you eating such large amounts of food, since we are generally used to eating concentrated, high-calorie meals. This is where blending is a huge help. For example, I usually fix up some Banana Milk.. one of my favorite Mono-Meals. Be sure to “chew your smoothie” so that you get some saliva in with the food, and drink it slowly.

I’ve always had body issues. They stemmed from my parents constantly trying to push me into diets and telling me that I needed to lose weight. They don’t do it so much anymore. The reason I’m bringing this up is because yesterday I realized something: my mom also has body issues. I don’t know why this never occurred to me before. I was weighing myself for weigh in Wednesday and she was telling me how I should be exercising and eating right. This is when I started to get annoyed with her. She told me that she didn’t want me to get mad at her because she knows how I feels.

I’ve always been fat. Your father has always been skinny. I understand the struggle. I know what people think of us.

Then we both weighed ourselves, and we’re literally less than a pound apart. I never thought that my mother, a strong, independent woman, would have body issues. For all these years, I thought my parents were being highly critical. I guess they care.

(Daily Mail Reporter By MARK DUELL) — An abnormal growth of blood vessels on her left eye could have blinded her. But Christian couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland relied on faith healing instead of taking infant daughter Alayna to a doctor.

Couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, members Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ

Couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, members Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ, relied on faith healing instead of taking infant daughter Alayna to a doctor

Her condition has now improved under state-ordered medical care but her parents have been convicted in Oregon of felony criminal mistreatment.

Alayna was born in December 2009 and developed the blood vessels that covered her left eye and threatened her vision.

But her parents belong to unorthodox Oregon City congregation the Followers of Christ, which relies on faith healing.

So rather than taking their daughter to a doctor, they relied on prayer, anointing her with oil and laying hands on her.

Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy Emile Burley testified in May that he made a child welfare check at the family home in June 2010, and instantly noticed a ‘large bulging area’ on Alayna’s left eye.

It was ‘the size of a golf ball, maybe a little larger’, he said - and photos shown in court suggest at one point that it was as big as a baseball.

Her parents said in another hearing last July they wouldn’t have willingly taken her to a doctor because it would violate their religious beliefs.

Around 20 supporters from their church were in court to hear the verdict, made by the jury in an hour, and sentencing was set for June 24.

Two other couples from the same church whose children died from untreated ailments have been prosecuted in the last two years.

Jeff and Marci Beagley got 16 months in jail after their son Neil, 16, died of complications from an untreated urinary tract blockage.

The Beagleys’ daughter’s husband, Carl Brent Worthington, was jailed for 60 days over the death of his young girl Ava, who had bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection.

They are expected to receive probation or some jail time, although the maximum jail sentence for first-degree criminal mistreatment is five years.

But the Wylands were the victims of inflexible bureaucrats and religious persecution because of their faith-healing beliefs, Mark Cogan, defending, said.

They were loving parents who fully cooperated with court orders, taking the child to the doctor and giving her prescribed medication, defense lawyers added.

But this defense was just a smokescreen, Christine Landers, prosecuting, said.

The couple had more than six months to seek medical attention before the state intervened but they did not because of their faith, she said.

The Wylands are the third couple from the same church to have been prosecuted by Clackamas County in just two years.

The Followers of Christ was founded in the 1890s in Kansas but moved to Oregon City in the 1940s.

The devout followers firmly believe that the power of prayer and the laying on of hands - where ministers lay their hands on believers while praying - can cure illnesses.

It’s thought that some followers secretly visit traditional doctors - but if found out, they are likely to find themselves ostracized.

5 Best Natural Sources of Calcium for Healthy Bones:

Collard Greens.  Leafy green vegetables are one of the most healthful sources of calcium and magnesium.  One cup of boiled collards contains a whopping 358 milligrams.  Kale, broccoli, Swiss chard, bok choy and turnip greens are full of calcium, too.  The one exception is spinach, which has a high concentration of oxalate, making it difficult for the body to absorb calcium.

Baked beans.  Beans in general are a great source of calcium, as well as a hearty non-animal protein.  One serving of baked beans contains over 100 milligrams of calcium.  Navy beans, white beans and garbanzos are also full of calcium and magnesium, as are soybean products like tofu.

Oatmeal. Surprisingly, two packets of instant oatmeal contains between 100-150 mg of calcium, and more magnesium than a cup of collard greens.  Quinoa is another calcium-rich grain.  Try either for a healthy breakfast.

Sesame seeds.  Just one tablespoon of sesame seeds contains about 88 milligrams of calcium, and about a third of the daily value for magnesium. Make sure to buy the unhulled kind, though, as it’s the seed’s hull (outer shell) that contains most of the nutrients.  Try grinding them up like flax seeds and adding to breakfast cereal or soups and salads.

Almonds.  Almonds are a nutritional powerhouse, providing a dense source of protein and fiber, along with calcium and other minerals necessary for building strong bones.  Just one serving has 750 milligrams of calcium.  Almonds, plain or mixed with dried fruit, make great snacks by themselves, or try replacing your jar of peanut butter with nutrient-rich almond butter.

Indonesian worker slaughtering a dog for a meal. A meal of dog meat and rice is believed to cure skin disease and boost vitality, and is sold for 99 cents.

Interesting to compare, in America we are told that a healthy diet is subsidized by meat and dairy, when in fact a diet of over 5% protein is unhealthy because of its excessive, and proven carcinogenic effects.  To put that into perspective, some fruits and vegetables with the lowest amounts of protein generally range at about 7%, still higher than the necessary protein intake.  An over-abundance of this protein from animals results in heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancers which are almost unseen in areas of the world that exist off of a whole food diet.

Having healthy skin also includes staying away from certain foods. Below are the worst foods for skin and should be avoiding or at least consumed in moderation.

Coffee. Can’t live without your morning Starbucks? You might have to in order to avoid the high levels of caffeine and sugar that can cause oily spots and rob your body of moisture. Try getting one of their many teas instead.

Salt. No surprise here, too much salt can also dry out your skin and lead to other health problems. It is often found in chips, pretzels, and even many soups have a high salt count. Try substituting a small amount of sea salt in recipes that call for regular salt.

Greasy foods. Also not a shocker, the oils found in these foods contain a high level of saturated fats and little to none of the essential fatty acids. These foods can include pizza, cheeseburgers, or anything fried. If the bag or box you bought it in is soaked in grease, this is not a good food for your skin or body.

Alcohol. No one ever said getting healthy skin was easy. It can also dehydrate your skin, especially after over indulging. Many drinks, such as daiquiris and margaritas, can also contain lots of sugar. Those who must have a drink should stick to light beer or a clear liquor mixed with water or plain soda.

White starches. These include items made with white flour such as bread, pastas, and rice. They can raise insulin levels causing inflammation in the skin. This sort of food also takes the place of whole grains, which can contain high amounts of selenium.

Soda, this includes Red Bull and similar drinks. Getting your eight glasses a day from soda can do damage to your skin. The sugar and artificial elements make it more difficult for your body to hydrate. Lipton and Pepsi offer a sparkling green tea that makes a great substitute.

Processed meats. These can be full of nitrates, salt, hydrogenated fats, and many other harmful ingriedients which are damaging to the skin. Any processed meat, such as bacon, hot dogs, sausage, anything found in a Hot Pocket, and similar products can be full of these. If you’re not sure, flip the package over and read the ingredients to see if it passes the test.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by emaciation, a relentless pursuit of thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight, a distortion of body image and intense fear of gaining weight, a lack of menstruation among girls and women, and extremely disturbed eating behavior. Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting, or misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas.

Many people with anorexia see themselves as overweight, even when they are starved or are clearly malnourished. Eating, food and weight control become obsessions. A person with anorexia typically weighs herself or himself repeatedly, portions food carefully, and eats only very small quantities of only certain foods. Some who have anorexia recover with treatment after only one episode. Others get well but have relapses. Still others have a more chronic form of anorexia, in which their health deteriorates over many years as they battle the illness.

According to some studies, people with anorexia are up to ten times more likely to die as a result of their illness compared to those without the disorder. The most common complications that lead to death are cardiac arrest, and electrolyte and fluid imbalances. Suicide also can result.

Many people with anorexia also have coexisting psychiatric and physical illnesses, including depression, anxiety, obsessive behavior, substance abuse, cardiovascular and neurological complications, and impaired physical development.

Other symptoms may develop over time, including:

    • thinning of the bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis)
    • brittle hair and nails
    • dry and yellowish skin
    • growth of fine hair over body (e.g., lanugo)
    • mild anemia, and muscle weakness and loss
    • severe constipation
    • low blood pressure, slowed breathing and pulse
    • drop in internal body temperature, causing a person to feel cold all the time
    • lethargy

    TREATING ANOREXIA involves three components:

    1. restoring the person to a healthy weight;
    2. treating the psychological issues related to the eating disorder; and
    3. reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts that lead to disordered eating, and preventing relapse.

Some research suggests that the use of medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics or mood stabilizers, may be modestly effective in treating patients with anorexia by helping to resolve mood and anxiety symptoms that often co-exist with anorexia. Recent studies, however, have suggested that antidepressants may not be effective in preventing some patients with anorexia from relapsing. In addition, no medication has shown to be effective during the critical first phase of restoring a patient to healthy weight. Overall, it is unclear if and how medications can help patients conquer anorexia, but research is ongoing.

Different forms of psychotherapy, including individual, group and family-based, can help address the psychological reasons for the illness. Some studies suggest that family-based therapies in which parents assume responsibility for feeding their afflicted adolescent are the most effective in helping a person with anorexia gain weight and improve eating habits and moods.

Shown to be effective in case studies and clinical trials, this particular approach is discussed in some guidelines and studies for treating eating disorders in younger, nonchronic patients.

Others have noted that a combined approach of medical attention and supportive psychotherapy designed spe-cifically for anorexia patients is more effective than just psychotherapy. But the effectiveness of a treatment depends on the person involved and his or her situation. Unfortunately, no specific psychotherapy appears to be consistently effective for treating adults with anorexia. However, research into novel treatment and prevention approaches is showing some promise. One study suggests that an online intervention program may prevent some at-risk women from developing an eating disorder.

    Homemade Strawberry Milk

1 Cup Strawberries (Either fresh or frozen), sliced

    1/4 Cup Sugar

    1/2 Cup Water

    1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

    2 Cups Skim Milk

In a medium saucepan, boil strawberries, sugar, water, and vanilla extract for 10-12 minutes, or until the strawberries release all their juices and the mixture is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a fine mech sieve (save cooked strawberries to put on yogurt, ice cream, or pancakes). Refrigerate the syrup until cool.

Stir together the syrup and milk (if too sweet, add 1/2 cup more milk to dilute the flavor) and serve in chilled glasses.

*Can you tell I adore strawberries?

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food (e.g., binge-eating), and feeling a lack of control over the eating. This binge-eating is followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as purging (e.g., vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics), fasting and/or excessive exercise.

Unlike anorexia, people with bulimia can fall within the normal range for their age and weight. But like people with anorexia, they often fear gaining weight, want desperately to lose weight, and are intensely unhappy with their body size and shape. Usually, bulimic behavior is done secretly, because it is often accompanied by feelings of disgust or shame. The binging and purging cycle usually repeats several times a week. Similar to anorexia, people with bulimia often have coexisting psychological illnesses, such as depression, anxiety and/or substance abuse problems. Many physical conditions result from the purging aspect of the illness, including electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal problems, and oral and tooth-related problems.

    Other symptoms include:

    • chronically inflamed and sore throat
    • swollen glands in the neck and below the jaw
    • worn tooth enamel and increasingly sensitive and decaying teeth as a result of exposure to stomach acids
    • gastroesophageal reflux disorder
    • intestinal distress and irritation from laxative abuse
    • kidney problems from diuretic abuse
    • severe dehydration from purging of fluids

As with anorexia, TREATMENT FOR BULIMIA often involves a combination of options and depends on the needs of the individual.

To reduce or eliminate binge and purge behavior, a patient may undergo nutritional counseling and psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or be prescribed medication. Some antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), which is the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating bulimia, may help patients who also have depression and/or anxiety. It also appears to help reduce binge-eating and purging behavior, reduces the chance of relapse, and improves eating attitudes.

CBT that has been tailored to treat bulimia also has shown to be effective in changing binging and purging behavior, and eating attitudes. Therapy may be individually oriented or group-based.

    Healthy Weight Loss Tips.

So, I went thrifting Mermorial Day afternoon, as I mentioned in an earlier post, and I snagged quite...

So my aunt finally came back from the Philippines and got me the body tape measure that I ask for (which was surprisingly hard to find in the US). I therefore measured different areas of my body and didn’t really feel good about the results.

I’ve been trying to seriously get to my ideal weight since the beginning of 2010. Although, I didn’t get really into it until last summer and the progress has been slow. I would lose some pounds then gain it back, lose it again, then gain it back. In 17 months, I have lost between 10 to 15 pounds total, which means I only lost less than a pound a month on average. Eek. Granted, I wasn’t as serious about exercising and eating right this year and I didn’t really get a gym membership until October 2010. I just feel like I should be further along now.

So now, my grand plan is to lose 20 to 30 pounds before grad school starts, which is in 3 months. 40 pounds by the end of the year in all and another 30 lbs by the start of next summer.

You can do the math if you’d like, by my ultimate goal is to weigh under 130 and my waist line to be no more than 28 inches. That’s not some arbitrary number that I picked out, that’s how much I need to weigh in order to have a normal BMI.  I know that’s possible for me because that’s my weight and waistline during Sixth Grade.

However, sometimes I feel like I put all this hard work of going to the gym three to four times a week, 45 minutes to 90 minutes and 350-800 calories burned each time. I eat brown rice and whole grain pasta, I cut down on meat, I try to eat more vegetables and fruits, I take vitamin supplements, and I eat reduced fat/calorie sweets. I reduced my alcohol intake immensely after college and I walk at least a mile a day in downtown dc between my bus stop and my work place.

And yet, all these hardwork is not reflected on the scale. And after I took my measurements, I’m larger than I thought. I know when I look into the mirror, my face, thighs, hips and arms look smaller and I have more muscle. I also now fit into Forever 21 regular L size dresses that are not stretch fabric and medium size belts from H&M. Work pants and jeans that I bought last Christmas are now loose by at least size bigger to me. I guess ultimately, that’s what matters, but the numbers are frustrating.

I guess, I know, the area I need to work on is portion control, snacking, and cutting down on sweets and junk food. I love chocolate and ice cream, what a girl can do? But do, I must.

Despite the cookie baking temptation (and falafel munching as I ate it hence the 8 falafels =[ ) I still managed to do really well!!! :D

I now realized I forgot to put the 1 T of soy sauce that was on my tofu in there which adds 8 cals, 1 carb, and 1 protein. I’m trying to tell myself crossing into the 1200’s by 7 calories is completely okay but it will be the first time I eat 1200 or more since I started this diet and I’m a bit anxious because of it. On the flip side I measure under so there’s a good chance something else wasn’t as high as I though. PLUS! My fat today was so great, only 20 grams DESPITE 13 for the falafel incident!!

Maybe I need to start working harder.

You know how people always say that you won’t be successful with weightloss unless it’s for the right reasons?

I’m afraid that I’m doing mine for the wrong reasons.

I have never had a boyfriend.  I honestly think it’s because I’m bigger.
I was also picked on for my weight from 6th grade through freshman year.  But then I learned how to dress myself and made some friends, so the bullying stopped.

I want to lose weight to prove all of those mother fuckers wrong.
i want them to see me and say, “Damn.  That’s Ali?”
I want them to want me, and then I want to shut them down, just like they did to me.

    haters gunna hate. :]

    • No eating past 7pm.
    • No eating at any restaurant that has a drive-thru.
    • No ice cream. (I work at an ice cream shop. Yikes!)
    • Lose 5 pounds minimum.
    • Run at least three days each week.

    Healthy Weight Loss Tips.

    1. Do not starve yourself.
I cannot stress this enough. Number one it is horrible for your body, but you’ll be shocked to know it doesn’t even work. What happens is that when you are lacking food, your body goes into starvation mode to keep you alive. It will cling onto everything you eat and turn it into fat, so instead of losing weight you’ll actually gain weight. After a while you will eventually start to lose, but when you are comfortable and go back to eating you’ll gain it all back, and maybe end up even bigger than you were previously. It soon turns into an obsession that is very hard to get out of. You will hurt yourself and your family&&friends.

    2. Drink lots of water.

    3. Eat lean meats like chicken and fish.
Try to grill it or pop it into the oven rather than frying. Do not add a bunch of sauces, but you can season it to your desire - Just make sure to not add a lot of salt.

    4. Eat lots of vegetables.
I’ve learned that when you are making your plate, it is a lot healthier to keep vegetables a staple rather than carbohydrates or meat/fish. It keeps you full longer and its less fattening. Make sure it’s a lot of greens!

    5. Get sufficient sleep.

    6. Slowly cut back on the ‘junk’.
Do not take it all out at once! If your having a few chocolate bars a day, slowly reduce it to only one a day, then when you feel confident you are keeping your cravings under control, make it only once a week. Find out what foods you absolutely love and feel as though you couldn’t live without, and make sure you let yourself have a little bit once in a while. This i not a diet, but a life choice, and you are allowed to have a little bit of junk, as long as you don’t binge on it. This makes losing weight a lot easier knowing that you can still have some of the things you like.

    7. Eat in moderation.
It is a lot easier to not overeat if you get a smaller plate to use. Pile up your food on that small plate and your brain thinks that your having a huge meal, so it makes you feel full easier. Also, if your daily life allows it, try to eat little bits throughout the day. It keeps your metabolism running and you end up burning more calories in a 24 hour period.

    8. Exercise!
If you are serious about this, then you need to do some. Don’t do a lot all at once because by the end of the week you’ll be burnt out and likely give up like i have done many an occasion. Start out with cardio - 20 min. a day. Then slowly build up to 30 min. and then even an hour once you get a hang of it. Add strength exercises, like lifting weights and things of that nature. If you are a woman do not fret over it. It is extremely difficult to get ‘bulky’ unless your shooting testosterone into your bloodstream :D Hahaha.

I will likely add more to this list, but for now i’ll stop. I’m getting quite the headache (as usual. haha.) but if you can think of anything please send it in the ask box and if it is good i’ll add it to the list! Thank you.

    …i hope i get followers, …hahaha.

Just finished my super crazy interval training. My hair is DRENCHED in sweat and I love it. Well.....

we need to overpower this whole “thinspo” tumblr fad. Let’s say “Enough is enough!” & start defining beauty our way, the REAL way. Health is what’s beautiful. Health is strength. Skinny isn’t power, it’s not achieving anything, unless your goal is to have everything good about you be hindered for a sickly outward appearance. Loving your body for what it is and how it’s made is what’s beautiful, THAT is what we call strength. NOT starvation.

Nearly 1 in 100 people will suffer from Schizophrenia in their life time, which although on the surface you may at first think that is not very many, that means that approximately 77, 7979.09 people in London alone right now, statistically speaking, have Schizophrenia. When put like this, the statistics are shocking.

Society seems to have a problem with the word schizophrenia often feeling fear. In a recent coursework presentation I did I found that when I said the words ‘mentally ill’ to people, the main disorder that repeatedly came up was schizophrenia which they associated with being ‘crazy’, ‘insane’ and ‘abnormal’. Words that none of us would wish to be labelled with.

I have no personal experience of schizophrenia however I see anyone with a mental illness as the same as someone without, its just that their experience of life and view of the world may be different. Who is to say there is something wrong with that?

In my presentation I included the video ‘schizo’ and this shows exactly how we can create the wrong idea of someone and how actually people with schizophrenia are just like the rest of us deep down.

People with schizophrenia can work, maintain relationships and have stable lives, it is just a matter of the individual learning to recognise their symptoms and when they need help. It is no different to any other illness albeit a mental disorder or a physical condition. It is all about management and about having people there. We all need someone to lean on.

So next time you hear the word ‘schizophrenia’, try not to allow yourself to think straight to the stereotypical views and images the media and world have planted, unconsciously inside of you, and remember, behind their illness lies someone just like you, with needs, with a personality, and with feelings.

That title was slightly misleading. I do wish I was a morning person, but that’s not the point. the point is…is that TODAY.

    JUNE 10, 2011,

I am going to start Insanity. I loved P90X, but it’s too much of things I don’t need. I’d like to have a bunch of muscle, but I need cardio more than strength at this point. Soooo Insanity it is. And the food plan is surprisingly easy to keep up with, except for the fact that you have to eat FIVE times a day. Which is around three more than what I’m getting right now. (I’m lookin’ at YOU, job…)

Annnd, I’m going kickboxing for the first time today :) yay!

    Background info

During normal reproduction, a single cell is formed by the penetration of the sperm in to the egg and then from that stage onwards, the single cells divides at an exponential rate and forms YOU. The case for twins is different, the fertilized egg divides first, forming two identical zygotes and the result is monozygotic twins.

    Research/Findings

Many people assume that these twins should have the same genotype and phenotype and that the only thing that can change them is the environment. Recent findings have found out that it is not only the environment that causes variations in these twins.

Dr. O’Reilly, a psychiatrist at Lawsom Health Research Institute, used a pair of identical twins where one have schizophrenia and the other one doesn’t and identify all the genetic differences. Surprisingly, after examining a million markers, they found out that 12% of DNA can vary between identical twins.

breakfast this AM: banana and nectarine smoothie (freshly made!) with bagel and tofutti cream cheese. yummm

It’s very interesting. Along with describing the metabolic changes within an obese body, the narrator also describes the downfall of most diets. Because people tend to starve themselves on a diet (inadvertently or not), their bodies crave foods with a higher caloric value (ie milkshakes, burritos, etc) to feel satisfied. Once someone caves and eats these foods, the set point (the weight your body tends to gravitate toward) for their body gets higher in order to avoid starvation, and they’ll gain more weight because their body will be hungry until they reach this set point. So once they check the scale and notice they’ve gained, they’ll start a diet again. This starts the whole process over, creating a vicious cycle.

It’s so important to just eat a normal, healthy diet and get exercise. Fad diets don’t work, especially those that try to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. Your body needs carbs, healthy fats & oils, and sugars to keep your metabolism going. The trick is portion control and making sure you get these things in healthy quantities. Unless you can find a diet that includes a healthy amount of food and calories for each day, you really should be wary of it.

I’ve been thinking about trying P90X for a while now. I think I’m finally in good enough shape to try it.

I tried the original P90 program a couple years ago and it was pretty good.  It’s a lot less physically demanding but I was still too fat to do the all the yoga work.  lol

I heard Insanity is good too.  My friend Mark raves about it.  After one workout his clothes are completely soaked in sweat.

(MyFoxHouston) — A Detroit father said agents with the Transportation Security Administration singled out his special-needs son for a pat-down while the family was headed to Disney World, MyFoxDetroit.com reported, an incident that the TSA admitted was a “case of bad judgment.”

    Drew Mandy

    Drew Mandy

David Mandy said agents at Detroit Metro Airport took his son Drew, 29, and asked him about the padding underneath his pants, which turned out to be adult diapers. Drew, who is severely mentally disabled, had trouble understanding the agents’ orders because his family said he has the mental capacity of a 2-year-old.

When the father tried to intervene and explain Drew’s disability, he said the two agents said, “Please, sir, we know what we’re doing.”

The agents confiscated a six-inch plastic hammer, something Drew had carried with him for 20 years for comfort. Agents called it a security threat, his father said, adding that they tapped the wall with it and said, “See, it’s hard. It could be used as a weapon.”

The family was told they’d have to ship the hammer if they wanted to keep it, David Mandy said.

“I understand they’re trying to keep people safe,” Mandy told MyFoxDetroit.com. “But come on, does he look like a terrorist?”

In a statement to FoxNews.com, the TSA said it’s reviewing the incident but early findings indicate this was an “isolated case of bad judgment.” The TSA reached out to the Mandy family to apologize and said the man’s toy hammer should have never been confiscated.

Day Six- Do you binge? If so, explain why you think you do.

I’m not exactly sure what binging entails. Like, do I sometimes eat food that I shouldn’t? Yes, all the time. Do I overeat? Sometimes. Do I overeat on purpose? Not at all.

I used to do a lot of mindless eating. I would be watching tv and eating chips, or doing homework and eating. I never got full from it.

I also eat when I’m bored, sad, angry. It’s weird, but I’ll finish eating a meal, and then thirty minutes later I’ll be hungry again. I shouldn’t be hungry. I usually eat fruit when that happens.

    I don’t think I have a binging problem. I think I have a eating-foods-you-shouldn’t-eat-and-not-exercising-problem, which I’m working on.

    The Simpsons on Your Conscience

On 11/6/11..my maid fell from steelless stain strais.Just in my head i know i’ll be the one who in charge to cook,to clean everything at the kitchen. But i like doing this work. Dishes, cook, clean all the table and everything as people know.To me it’s also an exercise, since i’m a diabetic.I prefer doing things like this than jogging.

The reason why is cause i feel tired fast than normal people does..so it’s no problem to me to do something healthy for myself,by doing this work. Moreover i faced a serious problem with myself..like eating disorder, bulimia and pre-anorexia (i call this cause ever face it nearly a month!).My body just like a stick..from my friends and family viewed. But i never think like that.

So..i don’t mind what work that involve sweating,i’ll be doing it with happy feeling, work hard feeling..haha.And it’s also for myself,my diabetes.Well, replacing my maid position is not bad at all,right..? I love it ;)

Stop in here for while..healthy thing..my sleeping time still worst!

Practicing forearm stands in my hallway before I go to the gym.

I know I don’t look like some of the pictures I post, but I’m a work in progress, and I’m pretty happy with how things are going!

last night i ran 3 miles and walked 1 mile.  it felt good! my local trail kinda sucks because it’s so hilly.  but i guess it’ll only help me for xc!

i’m putting an honest effort into trying to eat healthier.  i’ve been trying to add whole grains and fruits and veggies where i can and avoiding processed foods and sodas.  plus eating in moderation; i tend to over eat…

i have the thinnest arms, so i really want to work on upper-body strength.  i’ll do that along with some more plyo.

    • 15 push-ups
    • 2 x 25 sit-ups
    • 3 x my plyo routine
    • weights… (i need to get some heavier ones!)

I’ve always been the chubby kid.

Growing up I had to get clothes in the “husky” section.

I never liked sports or sweating for that matter.

Although I’m heavy, I really don’t eat terribly… I tend to eat very healthy, I don’t binge or over-indulge. I hate chocolate and don’t have sweets or junk food in my house.

I think most of my weight issues stem from the fact that I live a very sedentary life. I work in front of a computer 8-10 hours per day. Even though I don’t own a car most of my life revolves around a small 4-5 mile radius of downtown Chicago that I usually bus, train, or taxi around. I’ll walk if it’s not too far.

I’ve had gym memberships. My first was when I was 22 or 23. It took me about a year to work up the courage to go and join but I finally did it. I went in, took the tour, signed the contract, and got my membership card. A year later I had spent about $700 for a membership I never used once.

Every once in awhile I dieted. I did South Beach for awhile. Then there was the time I only ate chicken and potatoes. Thankfully, the idea of Jenny Craig or Nutri-System never seemed to pique my interest.

I moved to Chicago in 2007 and decided it was time to get serious. So, I joined another gym. This membership did get some moderate use. I signed up for some personal training sessions and met a great trainer. I saw some results but quickly the cost of keeping a trainer [and motivation] fizzled.

A year later, I decided to get serious… again. This time, I joined a gym that was less than a block from where I worked and I again hired a trainer. Over the course of a few months I lost about 30 pounds, went down 2 pant sizes, 1 shirt size and began to really feel good about myself and the routine I got myself into. However, some life circumstances cast a shadow over the progress and a few months later I was gaining the weight back.

The following year I did manage to get ANOTHER gym membership. This gym was embarrassingly close to my house, like less than 500 feet. However, my low sense of self-esteem and lack of courage and determination only got me to that gym twice. Again, another year’s gym membership down the drain.

Then, in the past year, I’ve made some dramatic changes in my life. I’ve changed jobs, moved to a different neighborhood, having a much better living situation, and personally I’ve made some choices and decisions that have helped me become a healthier person, emotionally and spiritually.

I knew the only thing missing at this point was my physical health.

Last October I got sick with mono, but it wasn’t just one of those cases that lasts a few weeks and is gone — this one stuck with me. I lost energy, was fatigued, and with the grey and dark winter days grew depressed.

My eating habits started to go downhill… living in the middle of a neighborhood filled with restaurants with fast and convenient delivery, I soon rarely left the house for anything.

Then, in May of this year, I got very sick. I was having persistent fevers and night sweats along with chills. Repeated visits to the doctor and countless tests yielded no results and after a couple of weeks I was admitted to the hospital. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Words like “cancer” and other serious illnesses were being discussed as possible culprits. Thankfully, it was nothing serious… just a bad combo of a viral infection and mono. Other than that, I was given a clean bill of health. My heart, blood pressure, and other vital signs were all normal.

Those few days and that entire experience really got me thinking about my life and my health.

For the greater part of my life I’ve been overweight and unhappy with myself. I’ve lacked the confidence and will-power to do something to change it. I’ve had moments where there’s been a spark of motivation but it’s quickly faded. I’ve taken some steps to better myself but they’ve not led anywhere.

And here I sit, 28 years old and nearing my last year of my 20s. I’ve had an experience that almost made me think my life was over… [I literally wrote an “if anything happens to me…” email] and now I know it’s not. I’ve been given another chance and an opportunity to do something.

    So I’m going to.

My goal is to spend these last days of 28 preparing to live the last year of my 20s in good health, in good shape, and to be a healthier, happy person. I want to lose weight but more than that, gain confidence and the willpower to be active and be healthy.

Being raised in a Christian home I know that our bodies are a gift and a dwelling place of God’s Spirit. I want to take care of mine and be the best I can be, stewarding the gift God has given me of good health.

So, the day after being discharged from the hospital I knew I needed to make some changes and thus, this journey began.

After being discharged from the hospital, I knew I needed to make some dramatic changes in my life for the betterment of myself and my health. I knew a diet wouldn’t work. This needed to be a lifestyle change.

I spent most of my first day home reading articles online about weight loss, getting fit, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I decided I needed to make commitments to myself and so I wrote up my health commitments. I posted a copy of these on my refrigerator and keep a copy in my wallet. I read and review them nearly every day as a reminder to myself of the changes I’m committing to embrace.

    Here they are…

1 - Eat 3 healthy meals per day no later than 7:30 PM.

    • I never eat breakfast, which I know is terrible. So this commitment was huge to get me in the habit of eating 3 meals per day.
    • Living a chaotic life in the city, my dinnertime hours can range anywhere from 7-9:30 PM. That has to change. I need not eat big meals so late and so close to bedtime. This one will be hard but necessary.

2 - Eat healthy foods and maintain and online food journal.

    • I’ve made a commitment to not eat any processed foods or foods with white flour, sugar, or any starches.
    • I want to mainly eat fresh [and if available, organic] fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.
    • Keeping an online journal, for me, has been very helpful. I love MyFoodDiary.com.

3 - Drink at least 64 oz of water per day.

    • Most days I would drink very little water. I’d start the day with Starbucks, have a diet Coke at lunch, and maybe have water before dinner while waiting for a diet Coke or cocktail to arrive.
    • Now, I’m committing to becoming a water-drinking fool. No sports drinks, very little coffee, and if I need a boost drinking green tea.
    • I got a Camelback water bottle and LOVE it.

4 - Limit going out to eat and alcohol consumption.

    • This is huge for me. Most of my meals up to this point have been from eating out. Chiptole [which isn’t awful for you if you make the right decisions], Chinese take-out, you name it. I never cooked at home. That has to chane.
    • If I go out, I will commit to trying to keeping that for the weekends only and will commit to making the healthiest decisions possible.
    • Alcohol-wise, I want to avoid it altogether for the first 90 days of this process. After that [or if I break down between now and then], I only want to drink on weekends and keep it to lite beers and cocktails like vodka sodas. No dark beers or sugary cocktails.

5 - Exercise at least 1 hour per day, 6 times per week.

    • Again, a big commitment.
    • I do have a gym membership now but without a trainer I only feel equipped enough to do cardio. But, I know if I want to lose weight I need to build muscle. Muscle burns fat.
    • After seeing the informercials and seeing some of my friends’ crazy results, I’ve purchased the Power90 in-home training program. It’s the step below P90X for beginners. I’m committing to doing the program for the next 90 days.
    • In addition to focused exercise, since it’s summer, I will commit to walking as much as possible to the various destinations that are a part of my weekly routine, trying to limit the amount of public transportation and taxis I take.

6 - Get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

    • Admittedly, I’m a night owl and with distractions like technology and Netflix, I’m often prone to having a very late bedtime. That has to change. I know that in order to lose weight you need to get adequate amounts of sleep.
    • So, my goal is to be in bed by 10:30 PM on weekdays and 12 AM on weekends, giving myself at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

7 - Give myself one “free day” per week.

    • With all of these dramatic changes, I know I’ll need a break.
    • I’m going to commit to having one free day per week where I cut loose and don’t freak out over what food I eat.
    • I won’t go buck wild but I will treat myself appropriately trying to make healthy choice and decisions.

I’m choosing to make these commitments to myself so I can reach my goal weight by my 29th birthday, November 25, and live the last year of my 20s as the healthiest year of my life so far.
