Recently, we needed a country select field for a form. We decided to use the official country select plugin from the rails team.

Congratulations!

[en] Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s, now popular in Hong Kong and all of East Asia. It’s milky tea with syrup flavours and taipioca starch, taro or sago pearls nestled at the base of the plastic cup. Here the favourite spots by TimeOut London, in surprisingly around China Town:

Places to Visit and Do While in Taiwan (from my own experience):

Taipei

1. Shilin Night Market

  • try snow shaved ice and pretty much everywhere you see a long line
  • play basketball arcade games
  • bargain with vendors everything you buy (shopping here is THE BOMB!)

2. Wholesale Wu Feng Pu- it’s the largest shopping wholesale area for clothes! Super cheap!

3. Danshui- a sea-side district with lots of old fashioned Taiwanese food, street games, vendors, etc.

  • must try black sugar shaved ice, octopus, stinky tofu, etc. Everything!
  • go there at night to experience the night atmosphere, watch the boats and take a boat across to the other side

4???- The youngest and hippest scene for shopping, food and gay bars.

  • There’s an art district that has great gay bars, live music, a cute art museum/shop, performance art center, etc,

5. 101 Tower-

  • This area is more expensive, but go clubbing here! Then around 5 am go get Yong He Soymilk breakfast after you go dancing. People don’t start dancing until midnight- but if you’re brave like me- you’ll start the dance floor early. Clubs close at 4-5 am.

6. Gonguan -

Taichung

1. Night Markets

Chiayi

1. Alishan-A famous mountain area in Taiwan. Watch the sunrise at around 4 am. You can ride the bus up and find any hotel for cheap- like 1000 for 2 bedroom, or even cheaper. Hike the mountain and absorb the beauty which is embedded in the forestry. EAT UP THERE and BUY ALISHAN TEA AND DRIED FRUITS, among many other things. Great place to pray, eat and love yourself.

Kaohsiung

1.BEACH- go to Kenting beach. And eat lots of seafood.

Anyways- there’s a whole lot you can do.

Personally when I go to Taiwan, these are the things I like to do:

1. NAILS-Get my nails done- like BLINGED OUT, because it is so much cheaper in Taiwan. I get fake nails with tons of crystals, fruits, music notes, I can’t get enough!

2. EAT-I eat a lot, yet I still lose weight because you do tons of walking. I literally walk like 10 miles a day, easily.

3. SHOP-I shop like there’s no tomorrow, I can get shirts for like 2 bucks. I bargain like there’s no tomorrow as well. Shopping in Taiwan is WAY WAY WAY better than shopping anywhere else- any country I’ve been to.

4. HAIR-I get my hair cut, dyed, permed, anything, washed even because Taiwanese salons are legit and they know Asian hair. You’ll come out a rock star when you go to one. Plus, it’s way cheaper than the US.

5. ARCADE-PLAY ARCADE GAMES! THEY’RE SO FUN!

6. HOT SPRINGS- IS A MUST!!! GOOGLE Hot Springs Taiwan. I wish there were legit hot springs in US, but there are none- so I end up hot springing in my own bathtub.

7. PEOPLE-Lastly, though there’s a thousand more things I would like to write here…getting to know the people in Taiwan is the most most important. Don’t hang out with expats, lol- even though I do….but get to know the locals. This is key anywhere you go in the world. Don’t stick with your kind, run down to the night market, morning markets and get to know local pig slaughters, small shop owners, the guy who sells the breakfasts, the student walking back from school, the mcdonald’s lady, etc.

Use mandarin even if your mandarin sucks, get laughed at, but you immediately bond with the people.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to eat pig blood, pig intestines, stinky tofu, oyster pancake, etc. Try new foods and be open to the way people do things in Taiwan- you’ll be surprised how Americanized you are.

o.o

I got up super early today - 7:15 when my earliest alarm was set for 9. I worked on packing the suitcase I took to Orophin’s house tonight and then worked out my credit card. After all of this hassle of not being able to get it to me and not having money I am no longer left no my own destruction!

I met up with Kiki in JhongLi around 11, I have missed that city so much and I can still remember my complete way around it. From just wandering around with her today the biggest change I can find is that the arcade that used to be next to the train station has been changed into a restaurant. We bought Coffin Bread, which I had seen but never actually eaten before, then waited for her parents to come get us.

We all went to Shimen Shan, a mountain which on the weekends becomes surrounded and the paths fill with different stands selling everything (clothes, fresh vegetables, every street food you could really want on a mountain, and of course a chance to sing a song at Karaoke 10 kuai/song). Her parents were worried that I hadn’t sufficiently tried enough things the times I had gone there before so I was treated to ?? (hard to describe, but it has different types of beans, tapioca, a pudding thing which I believe is made from tofu, and some sort of ice-y soup)???? (sweet potato boiled [I think] in sugar or possibly honey), another type of sweet potato food (fried and then you can pick what flavor to go on it, ours were seaweed) then given a black tea and 2 mangos to take home with me later.

I had a good time seeing her again and her parents invited me to come back anytime I could. I hope I can see her when I go to Taichung to see Peter, Kiki is one of my favorite former classmates.

On the train on the way back to Taipei I had today’s “Conversation with a Stranger.” Talked to a lady for maybe 15-20 minutes just about the usual, where I’ve studied in Taiwan, which city is my favorite, etc. A very soft-spoken woman, she seemed a bit sad to have to leave when her stop came.

When I got back to Taipei I finished packing my large suitcase and took it and a smaller bag to Orophin’s house. If I had gotten back earlier I probably would have taken a taxi from the Taoyuan train station but it was too late for me to feel safe enough. I have now taken my largest suitcase on a public bus in Taiwan, oh happy day.

Now I just have to finish packing everything up around here so I can take it and drop it off in a locker at the train station tomorrow and not have to hike around everything all day long. I somehow managed once again to completely forget about my pillow and blanket so I will not only have to put my remaining clothes and books in my small suitcase but also a pillow and blanket. Wish me luck!

Normal night at the park with some friends. Cops were called, we left before they arrived. Normal.
