Ray Liotta will join the cast of A Place Beyond the Pines!
Via The Playlist:If you weren’t already pumped for “A Place Beyond the Pines,” director Derek Cianfrance‘s follow-up to “Blue Valentine,” you’d better be now. Variety reports that Ray Liotta, one of the most manic and entertaining actors working today, will be joining ‘Pines’ which already includes “Blue Valentine” star Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Greta Gerwig. Cianfrance, who co-wrote the film with Ben Coccio, has compared the tone of the film to “The Godfather” and “The Deer Hunter” (Holy crap!). Sidney Kimmel, Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell and Alex Orlovsky are on board as producers.
Liotta will play a corrupt police officer in what the director has called a “generational crime flick.” The story focuses on a professional motorcycle rider (Gosling) who turns to to robbing banks in order to support his newborn son. Things go wrong when he crosses the path of a police officer-turned-politician (Cooper). Cianfrance has said of the project, “I have a film called ‘The Place Beyond The Pines,’ which is all about fathers and guns, and it has motorcycles and guns in it.” We’re definitely interested! Mendes will play the mother of Gosling’s son and Gerwig is slotted as Cooper’s wife. It was announced last week that “Animal Kingdom” actor Ben Mendelsohn will play Robin Van Der Zee, the mechanic who turns Gosling’s character onto the life of crime.
Liotta will appear next year in Andrew Dominik‘s “Cogan’s Trade” opposite Brad Pitt. Over the course of 25 years, Liotta has played a cop in no less than a dozen films, so the role will no doubt be familiar to him. Hopefully, ‘Pines’ will take him down the path of his portrayals in films like “Narc” or “Cop Land,” and less so than “Youth in Revolt” or “Date Night.” Filming is expected to begin on July 25th.

Yup, and it's different than the Logan's Run remake that's planned as well. Here's the story from Variety:Ryan Gosling is ready to reteam with his "Drive" and future "Logan's Run" director Nicolas Winding Refn, as thesp is in negotiations to star in "Only God Forgives" alongside Kristin Scott Thomas.
Set in the worlds of gambling, boxing and prostitution in Bangkok, pic is a revenge story centering on a Thai cop and a British gangster hiding in Thailand.
French shingles Gaumont and Wild Bunch are co-producing and co-financing the project, to which they'll share international sales rights. Pic will start shooting in November and will be delivered during the second half of 2012.
Luke Evans was initially announced as being in advanced negotiations for the film, but he was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Peter Jackson's adaptation of "The Hobbit," in which Evans will play Bard the Bowman.
Gosling remains set to star in Warner Bros.' crime pic "The Gangster Squad" and Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines." Thesp next stars in WB's "Crazy, Stupid, Love," due in theaters on July 29, as well as George Clooney's political drama "The Ides of March," which Sony will release Oct. 7.

George Clooney's project The Ides of March will open the Venice Film Festival!
Via Variety:George Clooney's "The Ides of March" has been tapped as the opening film of the 68th Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31.
Fest hasn't made an official announcement but a source not authorized to speak for the event confirmed the selection Monday.
Sony's dated the political thriller for an Oct. 7 limited release. Clooney directed from a script he co-wrote with Grant Heslov. He also stars in the film, which is based on the Broadway play "Farragut North," written by Beau Willmon.
Pic centers on a young press spokesman, played by Ryan Gosling, who falls prey to backroom politics. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei Jeffrey Wright and Evan Rachel Wood are also starring.
Sony nabbed U.S. distribution rights to "March" in November, with Exclusive Media Group handling overseas distribution.
Venice competition berths have been set previoulsy for Roman Polanski's "Carnage," David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method," Russian auteur Aleksandr Sokurov's "Faust," the fourth and final installment in his "Men of Power" series, and Philippe Garrel's "Un ete brulant" (A Burning Hot Summer).

Here's the story from Deadline:va Mendes is set and Greta Gerwig is in talks to star alongside Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in The Place Beyond The Pines, a multi-generational crime drama that Blue Valentine's Derek Cianfrance will direct for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. The drama tracks the tragic consequences of a showdown between a motorcycle rider-turned-bank robber (Gosling) and a cop-turned-politician (Cooper). Mendes will play the robber's love interest and mother of his child, and Gerwig is in talks to play the politician's wife.The film begins production next month. Mendes most recently starred in Last Night and The Other Guys while Gerwig starred in Arthur and Greenberg and has just begun shooting Lola Versus, the Daryl Wein-directed Fox Searchlight comedy that also stars The Killing's Joel Kinnaman.
Kimmel, Lynette Howell, Alex Orlovsky and Jamie Patricof will produce. SKE's Jim Tauber and Matt Berenson will be exec producers. Howell, Orlovsky and Patricof teamed on Blue Valentine. Cianfrance wrote The Place Beyond the Pines with Ben Coccio. Sierra/Affinity's Nick Meyer is selling foreign.

Anthony Mackie is joining Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, and Josh Brolin in Gangster Squad!
indieWIRE has the story:God damn if Ruben Fleischer doesn’t keep finding new ways to makes us excited about “Gangster Squad.” The “Zombieland” director is moving into more serious territory with Warner Brothers’ big-budget period actioner, and has assembled a mouth-watering cast of awards bait, with Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and “Crash” star Michael Peña all confirmed for the film, written by ex-cop Will Beall, based on a series of L.A. Times articles about an L.A.P.D unit in the 1940s.
Now, one other name thought to be circling the project is officially locked in, with Variety reporting that fast-rising actor Anthony Mackie, last seen in “The Adjustment Bureau,” has now signed on to join Penn, Brolin, Gosling and Peña. The actor was rumored to be being courted for the film six weeks back, but it looks like things are now official: the actor will play an ex-cop, Rocky Washington, ‘the Sheriff of Central Avenue,’ the first black lieutenant in the LAPD who went back to be a beat cop, only to be recruited by Gosling and Brolin’s characters for their elite unite, which aims to take down legendary mobster Mickey Cohen (Penn).
Mackie’s been on the up ever since his scorching performance in Kathryn Bigelow‘s Oscar-winning film: He might have lost out to ‘Hurt Locker’ co-star Jeremy Renner for the lead in “The Bourne Legacy,” but he’ll appear later in the year in the Anna Faris comedy “What’s Your Number” and the Hugh Jackman robot boxing flick “Real Steel,” while next year will bring high profile supporting gigs in the Sam Worthington vehicle “Man on a Ledge” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”
What’s unclear is what signing on to “Gangster Squad” means for his involvement in the Brad Pitt starrer “World War Z”—it was reported at the same time as his involvement in Fleischer’s film that he was also mulling an offer for the zombie epic. That film starts shooting shortly, while “Gangster Squad” doesn’t roll til September, so it’s conceivable that they he could do both, if the scheduling works out.
Either way, his presence in “Gangster Squad” can only be a boon for a film that’s already got one of the most promising casts of 2013, a director on the rise and a much-acclaimed script. Considering the success of similarly themed video game “L.A. Noire,” Warners must be clearing space for all the money they’re going to make on this one, and fingers crossed, some critical plaudits as well.

...according to Deadline, at least:Here's how fast things move in Hollywood. At Cannes, I got my confirmations and revealed that Ryan Gosling would direct and star in MGM's remake of The Idolmaker. Now, a couple weeks later, I get to report that he's had to back out of the picture, at least for now. He just informed the studio he would be too busy. He's in pre-production on A Place Beyond the Pines, which reteams him with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, and then Gosling moves immediately into the Ruben Fleischer-directed Gangster Squad, starring with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in the period crime drama for Warner Bros. MGM is convinced that Idolmaker is a plum project and the studio and will continue developing the picture. If Gosling is available, they will revisit it down the line. It is fun to watch Gosling's transformation from darling of the independent film set to arguably the most coveted young leading man for studio films. After turning down lead roles in recent years I've heard included Superman, Jack Ryan, Akira and The Lone Ranger, Gosling is suddenly giving the studios a chance. He impressed the Cannes set with the Nicolas Refn-directed Drive, and Warner Bros is offering him everything after testing Crazy, Stupid, Love, with the studio getting Gosling to reteam with Refn in a remake of Logan's Run. It looks like MGM will have to find another star for its Idolmaker, the remake of the Taylor Hackford-directed film that starred the late Ray Sharkey as a music promoter.

Guy Lodge from In Contention says: “DRIVE (A-) I won’t lie to you: I pretty much want to have sex with this movie. Hot, clipped, nasty, beautiful. Best thing in Competition.”

But ‘holy shit’ can mean a lot of things. Not long afterward, Mr. D’Angelo got down to a slightly more measured take, which still makes the film sound like a success:
Drive (Winding Refn): 76. Patchy and shallow, but the highs are just insanely high. Half a dozen of the year’s best scenes. Genre bliss… And it’s not THE DRIVER II, either. Surprisingly little auto action. It should really be called LOOK given how predicated it is on faces…
And Jeff Wells chimed in with,
“Drive” isn’t as good as ” Thief,” but it’s respectably and sometimes very thrillingly in the same ballpark. Spare, hard, very high octane… All stand back & admire Albert Brooks for his older, smart-mouthed tough guy with a toupee in “Drive”…yay, Albert!… Ryan Gosling’s hard-guy, Steve McQueen character in “Drive,” but what there is he plays the he’ll put of. His first action film…wham!
Chase from Gordon and the Whale sounded one of the sour notes I’ve seen so far: “DRIVE made me really, really sad; I wanted to like it so much.”

Apparently so, according to Deadline:Ryan Gosling is set to star and direct a remake of the 1980 movie The Idolmaker for MGM. It would be the Oscar-nominated actor's directorial debut. Idolmaker, directed by Taylor Hackford, starred Ray Sharkey in a story about the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Gosling -- in Cannes this week for the premiere of the competition film Drive, co-starring Carey Mulligan and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn -- has been shifting his focus from indies to more mainstream fare of late. He's co-starring alongside Steve Carell in Warner Bros' Crazy, Stupid, Love, which opens July 29, and he is starring in Logan's Run and Gangster Squad, Warner Bros' big Will Beall-scripted crime drama that also will star Sean Penn and Josh Brolin.

Who might co-star with Ryan Gosling in Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to Blue Valentine?
Via Variety:Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has come on to finance and produce multi-generational crime drama "The Place Beyond the Pines."
Project's been in development since last year, with "Blue Valentine" writer-director Derek Cianfrance directing from a script he co-wrote with Ben Coccio. Ryan Gosling is attached to star, and producers have offered Bradley Cooper a starring role.
Gosling will portray a pro motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son, when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer -- the role Cooper is being lined up to play -- their confrontation spirals into a generational feud.
Project is being sold at Cannes with Sierra?/?Affinity handling foreign sales. CAA and WME Global packaged and will handle domestic sales.
Principal photography will start this summer.

Apparently so, according to The Wrap:Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in Disney's "The Lone Ranger," TheWrap has learned.
It's early, and Gosling's schedule might not permit him to take the role of the Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp as Tonto. Gosling is starring as Logan in "Logan's Run" which is scheduled to begin production this fall."The Lone Ranger" is a big movie: Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, is directing the adaptation of the durable franchise for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
The Lone Ranger started as a radio serial and was later turned into a TV series. The Lone Ranger is a masked lawman who, with his Native American friend Tonto, fights injustice. Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels starred in the "Lone Ranger" television series form 1949 to 1957.
"Revolutionary Road's" Justin Haythe is writing the screenplay.
Gosling was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the 2006 film "Half Nelson."
"The Lone Ranger" is scheduled to be released in 2014.
