Sony Pictures Classics acquires David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method!

Here's the press release:

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired the US Rights to David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD from UK based Hanway Films. The film, produced by Jeremy Thomas (THE LAST EMPEROR, SEXY BEAST), stars Viggo Mortenson, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, and Vincent Cassel. The film is currently in post-production.

Cronenberg once again gathered a prestigious crew to work on A DANGEROUS METHOD, director of photography Peter Suschitsky (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES), composer Howard Shore (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy, AVATAR), editor Ronald Sanders (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES, CORALINE), costume designer Denise Cronenberg (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES, THE INCREDIBLE HULK) and production designer James McAteer (GOOD WILL HUNTING, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN). The screenplay was adapted by Christopher Hampton (ATONEMENT, THE QUIET AMERICAN) from his own play.

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient in A DANGEROUS METHOD. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud. Both men fall under Sabina’s spell.

“David Cronenberg and Jeremy Thomas have made a film that not only has an impeccable cast and crew working at the height of their talents but tells one of the most fascinating love triangles of the twentieth century. The American public will enthusiastically embrace this picture. We are delighted to be in business again with Jeremy and David,” states Sony Pictures Classics.

Producer Jeremy Thomas adds, “I'm very excited to be working again with my friends at Sony Pictures Classics on David's wonderful film.”

Sony Pictures Classics released David Cronenberg’s SPIDER as well as several films produced by Jeremy Thomas (Takeshi Kitano’s BROTHER, Wim Wender’s DON’T COME KNOCKING, and David Mackenzie’s YOUNG ADAM).

Circuit Round-Up, 06/05

* Last week, Joey Magidson published his long-awaited (and very conflicted) thoughts on The Tree of Life, while Mike Ward mostly dismissed The Hangover: Part II.

* Joey also recommended something dumb but fun for his DVD Picks of the Week.

* The awards season has barely started and John H. Foote already felt comfortable betting the house on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.

* I gave a controversial warning in response to the rapturously-received trailer for David Fincher’s upcoming remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

* Anna Belickis concluded her long-running series on “Dancing with the Stars,” with her predicted winner Hines Ward taking the Mirrorball.

* Anna also paid tribute to Dakota Fanning for Women in Cinema, almost a full decade after her first major film role in I Am Sam.

* Speaking of tributes, I celebrated the recent success and acclaim of actor Michael Fassbender.

* Finally, the weekend openings were previewed. As always, we love to hear what you saw and what you thought of it.

Michael Fassbender might star in Danny Boyle's next project...

...according to The Playlist:

Merely days after the surprise announcement of Danny Boyle‘s next directorial effort “Trance,” comes word that Irish-German thespian Michael Fassbender is now in talks to star. While details were scarce initially the picture has now been revealed as the remake of a 2003 British telemovie of the same name written and directed by Joe Ahearne.

The “edgy art-heist thriller” will follow the story of an assistant at an auction house who masterminds a heist and teams up with a gang of thieves only to suffer a blow to the head and wake up with amnesia. As the only person who knew the location of the stolen painting, the assistant is then subjected to analysis from a hypnotist as the gang begin to suspect duplicity. Fassbender is eyeing the role of the shady gang leader who partners with the assistant.

No word yet on who’ll be penning the script for Boyle (rumor has it Ahearne will be returning) but the project is apparently in the vein of the helmer’s earlier works in “Shallow Grave” and “Trainspotting”—both those films were scripted by John Hodge with the latter earning an Oscar nod for writing. Boyle and producing partner Christian Colson also look set to reunite with Fox Searchlight and Pathe for distribution.

Lensing will begin this September however Boyle won’t start post-production until mid-2012 after he fulfills his and Stephen Daldry‘s commitments to the upcoming Summer Olympics. A March 2013 release is subsequently being eyed which also seemingly suggests that the film is more genre fare than an award season contender. That, of course, can change later down the track. The in-demand Fassbender is striking while his iron is still white hot, cutting a tear through Hollywood’s top directorial talent with fierce precision. If he signs on board, by the time he works with Boyle in the fall, the actor will have already worked with Quentin Tarantino, David Cronenberg Steven Soderbergh, Ridley Scott, Matthew Vaughn and re-teamed with the man who helped put him on the map, British filmmaker Steve McQueen.
