The brilliant, inspiring, cavalry commander, representing General Lee's extended eyes and ears, was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on this date in 1864. After so many successes from First Bull Run/Manassas, to the Peninsula, Maryland and Northern Virginia campaigns, and a controversial mis-step of arriving too late at Gettysburg after a tough skirmish at Brandy Station, Stuart was shot by a dismounted Union cavalry trooper with a .44 revolver from less than 30 yards. He was shot in the stomach; the high caliber round blew out his back. He would suffer from the wound until dying the next day with the final words "I am resigned. God's will be done." Many agree that Stuart was the greatest American cavalry commander ever. Sure wasn't Custer.
