Battle of Kwara! Bukky versus Gbemi and How a son betrayed his Father
When two elephants fight, the ground suffers. But in the battle of Kwara it's a case of cutting your nose to spite your face.I have watched with keen interest the unfolding events in Kwara state and the Saraki household with bated breath and heavy heart how the thirst for power can destroy a family and make a son betray his father.
There is a proverb that says those whom the gods want to kill they first make them mad and this is a classic example.
I remember eleven years ago while I was attending a social event which BaBa Oloye(Olushola Saraki)was the chairman of the occasion,I noticed a prominent Nigerian politician approach the Waziri of Ilorin asking for his blessings for his friend to be the next Governor of Kwara state in 2003.I was surprised when the elder Saraki replied in Yoruba saying OTI O,BUKOLA LO NI(meaning it belongs to Bukky),and this came to pass less than two years later.
I reckon alot of people are not fans of Saraki family for obvious reasons but I have never met a more pleasant and down to earth family despite their power and wealth.
Bukola Saraki is a Medical Doctor by trade and was vice Chairman of Societe Generale Bank before his advent into politics at his fathers request. It was Gbemisola who first shown an interest in politics when she contested for the House of Reps way before Bukky came on the scene and I reckon she is more experienced even though she is a woman.
When the rumour first surfaced about the fallout between father and son over Gbemis ambition I first thought it was a smokescreen to manipulate those Kwarans against the continous Saraki stranglehold on the state. It wasn't until it came to light that Bukky's mother is different from that of Gbemi,Laolu and Tope and subsequent washing of dirty linen in public that i knew the battle line had been drawn. If Gbemisola wins the election as expected as a result of her fathers influence then what next for Bukola?kiss and make up.Or if Bukky's candidate Fatah Ahmed wins, then Bukola would have succeeded where many men have failed, defeat his father and send him to his grave with a broken heart?but worse still if they both succeed in tearing their family apart in their quest for power with an unlikely victory for Dele Belgore a political novice then they would be doing the Ilorin Emirate a big favour.
