Madonna has commenced recording of her 12th studio album, the follow-up to 2008's 'Hard Candy,' her manager has revealed.

Guy Oseary splashed his scoop during the US's Independence Day, (4 July), via Twitter, saying "It's official.. Madonna's 1st day in the recording studio for the new album... Very exciting.. Happy 4th of july..."

Kylie Minogue retweeted the post with an added "Yaayyyy!!!" to which Madonna -- presumably -- responded (via Oseary) "thanks for the love -M." Her manager, then, is proving a useful source of news for eager Madge fans. Last month, he correctly predicted, again on Twitter, that his charge would re-enter the recording studio in July.

'Hard Candy' was Madonna's final studio album for Warner Bros Records, before she signed a mega-deal with Live Nation. Since then, the only new material Madonna has released is the title track to 2009's greatest hits set 'Celebration.'

Away from music, the pop icon has been busy opening fitness centres named after her last album, directing a biopic about Wallis Simpson and doting on Malawian orphans. So far, details on recording plans remain sketchy, with French house producer David Guetta denying rumours he is involved.
