
Time there was when Christian missionaries were renowned for their Spartan lifestyle. They would leave their rather comfortable home bases, often in the western countries, to eke a living in the malaria-infested regions of Africa. They endured the hardship the natives suffered in a bid to impart in them the knowledge of Jesus Christ, as well as education that would improve their lives. Then, pastors were at the beck and call of members of their congregations, always with a listening ear to the supplication of the members, and ever ready to proffer a solution to their problems. The tradition of caring was transferred to the African pastors who trained under the foreign missionaries.
