Universal, the global company that owns Amy Winehouse's label Island, has claimed the deceased star recorded the bases for a dozen tracks that could be released.

Since her last album 'Back To Black' came out in 2006, Winehouse struggled with addiction to drink and drugs before her death, though she went into recording studios at various points over the past two and a half years, the anonymous source said. One session acknowledged publicly was on the Caribbean island St Lucia.

The source told The Guardian that the "framework" was in place for a set of 12 unfinished songs. "Amy had expressed an interest in getting back into the studio, and after some consultation everyone thought that would be a positive thing and a distraction from the other things she was dealing with," he said.

Winehouse was confident enough about certain tracks that she allowed label bosses such as Universal chief executive Lucian Grainge to hear them. "She had put down the bare bones of tracks and some were further along than others," the source explained. "People were getting very excited, quite frankly they were really good. We heard rough cuts and they sounded like vintage Amy."

At the 2008 Music Industry Trust Awards, Grainge told the audience that the songs he had heard sounded "sensational". Any decision to release new material would be made by Winehouse's parents, both her management and label have said. Last year, the singer herself had described recent recordings as similar in style to her second album.
