Locked-out motorist arrested after setting fire to get help
Unable to attract help after locking her keys in the car, a Fresno motorist set a fire that blackened a half-acre of brush north of Santa Clarita, officials said Friday.
Jena Liberty, 48, was on her way to Manhattan Beach when her vehicle broke down near the Golden State (5) Freeway and Highway 138 about 4 a.m., officials said.
She tried to use a freeway callbox, but found it had been disconnected. When she returned to her car and discovered she'd locked the keys inside, officials said she started a fire to summon help.
"To get attention, she decided to set the hillside on fire," sheriff's Lt. Joe Efflandt. "And she got our attention."
Liberty was arrested on suspicion of arson, he said.
The fire burned about a half-acre of brush before it was quickly put out by firefighters. No injuries were reported.
