For my internship we had to watch a video that was recently on Dr. Oz about childhood obesity. Some background: a child who was considered obese soiled himself during school. When he went to the guidance counselor she contacted child services, not his mother. Child services then took the child away from his mother.
I think it raises some very good points but I don’t necessarily think it is child abuse. I think if anything parents love their children “too much” and one woman on the video even says that she doesn’t want her son to experience hunger. I also don’t think that a child should be taken away from their family, this can only make matters worse.
Being someone who has grown up overweight I agree with both sides. I think genetics has a lot to do with it. I eat significantly less/better than a lot of my friends and yet they are stick thin. Genetics didn’t make me gain 50 lbs but I know it will be nearly impossible for me ever to be a size two. But I definitely think that parents have a LOT to do with the eating habits of children.
