Donating half a million dollars to Joplin, Mo. is a great way to shift the focus from the nasty Brad Pitt nanny rumor, isn't it, Angelina Jolie?

Scandals aside, the genetically-blessed couple is no stranger to charities, but their latest donation is one of Brangelina's largest yet- $500,000 to go toward long-term rebuilding efforts in Joplin, which was nearly destroyed by a May 22 tornado.

With a death toll that tops 150, Joplin residents are still struggling with the aftermath of the twister, rebuilding homes and buildings that were taken down by 200 mph winds.

In a statement on Wednesday, the couple addressed their desire to reach out to the depths of Missouri, and help kick start the rebuilding process.

"With the devastating loss of thirty percent of the city, the Joplin community faces great challenges ahead. Having spent much of my childhood there, I know these people to be hardworking, humble and especially resilient," said Brad Pitt.

Jolie acknowledged the more widespread effect of natural disasters.

"Last year 42 million people worldwide were displaced by natural disaster," she said."So often these disasters seem far away, but now the need is for thousands of people displaced right here at home."

"Our hearts go out to the families in Joplin who have lost so much."
