EFCC begins fresh probe of el-Rufai

.
THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced a fresh probe of a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, over his alleged ownership of a telecommunication company, some
blue-chip firms and choice properties in Abuja.

Commission’s spokesperson, Mr  Femi Babafemi, confirmed the development, saying it was not out of order to investigate fresh allegations against somebody who is already standing trial.

The commission had arraigned el-Rufai and two others before an Abuja High Court for allegedly abusing his office.

In an eight-count charge of corruption and abuse of office, el-Rufai was accused of using his office to allocate choice plots of land to his wives and relations, in contravention of the Abuja master plan
It was gathered that the operatives of the commission, during one of his routine visits to its office, quizzed him over his alleged links with the said multi-billion naira companies and properties, but he was said to have denied having anything to do with them.

The fresh probe, according to sources within the commission, was compelled by fresh information linking the former minister to the ownership of a telecommunications company, some blue-chip companies and some choice properties scattered in highbrow areas of Abuja.

Some of the properties were said to be in the names of proxies and housed some companies linked to him.

His assets were reportedly being investigated by the commission.

A close associate of the former minister was said to have spilled the recent beans on his alleged multi-billion naira assets hidden under proxies and this reportedly gingered the commission to initiate the fresh probe.
