The shuttle is due to land back on Earth on Thursday, but with it's most recent space station mission complete a chapter closes on an era of space exploration ongoing since the first Columbia lift off in April of 1981. Everybody was watching on television in the era before the internet and 24/7 cable news networks, but the launches quickly became so routine that few were televised as the program entered it's busiest years. The 5 shuttles completed 134 missions-two were lost along with their crews. A large crowd will be watching as Atlantis returns Thursday.
