1. Why is it so important to honor creativity?
Me: Creativity has a divine and spiritual quality. It involves choice and free will and imagination and joy and is like breathing for me. I express it through writing, artwork, piano, voice, baking, and photography. Without it, problems often cannot find resolution. With it, peace and endless possibilities are within reach.

2. Any suggestions for finding lovely and sacredness in the “everyday?”
Me: I think “just notice” is a good start. Slow down enough to notice your surroundings and your internal world. This takes some quiet and reverence. I accomplish it by sweeping the floor, meditating, and walking outside. The everyday is so full of beauty for me, and I feel it so deeply that my issue is actually finding balance in other things.

3. When I say ‘beauty in imperfection’ what comes to mind?
Me: I think first of humanity. How very broken yet beautiful we are. I think about my children and how I have always reminded them they were created perfectly to be loved. Which is different than simply being created perfectly. I think of a three-legged dog. I think of vulnerability and how much pure goodness can flow in and out when we’re willing to let it show. And with imperfect objects, whether the imperfection comes from age or use or neglect, I see beauty in the cracks and

4. How important is humor to your life and work?
Me: Humor is a critical aspect of my life since I am naturally quirky and twisted.
Laughing at my flawed self, muddling through as a parent, and coping with illness throughout adulthood demands it. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at age 18, and there is nothing remotely dignified about living with inflammatory bowel issues. I also struggle with excessive anxiety, and humor helps me deal. As a writer, I write a fair share of humor (dude! more rants than I care to own up to...), and it's HEALING.

5. What 3 things are inspiring you at the moment?
Me: Just three? Wow. Words are a constant source. Lately I’ve been collaging vintage book covers separated from their pages. They save them for me at the library. I'm calling the series DISCARDED AND WITHDRAWN. Handmade and vintage things never fail to inspire me. And there’s an idea penetrating my thoughts these days—healing in the absence of cure.
It’s a transforming prospect.
