Niki Tobi
Aloysius Katsina-Alu Chief Justice of Federation
Dahiru MusdapherMany local and international observers had adjudged the April 14 and 21 elections as one of the most fraudulent in history. Instead of defending the integrity of the electoral law and upholding the Nigerian constitution, some of the justices opted to subvert the cause of justice – after receiving and sharing the sum of $30 million.
The cash was provided by the Umaru Yar'Adua regime and channeled to the justices through then Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa. As SaharaReporters disclosed, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu was the conduit between Mr. Aondoakaa and other corrupt justices who fell for the bait
investigation revealed that the justices who accepted the bribe are (then Chief Justice) Legbo Kutigi, current Chief Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, Justice Niki Tobi, and Justice Dahiru Musdapher.
Mr. Niki Tobi, who recently retired from the Supreme Court, is currently facing a dire health crisis. A source close to him disclosed that Justice Tobi’s dismal health was triggered by the shock he got when the Yar’Adua regime reneged on other parts of its pledge to the justice. “Chief Aondoakaa had promised that Justice Tobi’s son, Ebowei, would be elevated to the Court of Appeal and that the justice would be made Chief Justice. Those two parts of the deal were scuttled,” said the source, handing the justice a shock that shattered his health.
Justice Dahiru Musdapher, one of the recipients of Yar’Adua’s bribe, is currently the number two at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Mr. Musdapher is expected to head a "probe" panel set up by the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) to look into allegations of corruption made against current Chief Justice Katsina-Alu as well as the President of the Court of Appeal, Ayo Isa Salami
An Abuja-based lawyer described Justice Musdapher as “one of the most corrupt justices at the Supreme Court.” He admitted in open court that he had mediated in the conflict between Mr. Katsina-Alu and Mr. Ayo Salami when the President of the Court of Appeal battled the CJN over the Sokoto State gubernatorial election case that was before a panel of the Court of Appeal. But Mr. Musdapher recused himself from hearing an appeal from on the Sokoto case only after he blocked the lower appellate court from delivering the judgment it had reserved for the case
Three justices, Aloma Mariam Mukhtar (the first female Supreme Court justice), George Oguntade and Walter Onnoghen dissented from majority verdict that upheld the validity of Mr. Yar’Adua’s presidential election
