Table For Two

I knew a surprise was in store the night before.

The tell tale signs were pretty obvious, as with the past years..."Please ask Daddy to take us out, we need to get some stuff"..."Do not open the fridge".... "Don't come downstairs tomorrow morning until we call you".. So, how wouldn't I guess?

Before I carry on, lemme say that I have 2 incredible teens. They were planning for yet, another surprise meal for Sunny's and my 17th wedding anniversary last week. Whilst now we get really different range of 'surprised' meals for special occasions, it really was something else 8 years ago. A tradition that started about the time when they were 7 and 8 years old, I'd say Kelly and Daniel have come a long way. I still get fondly emotional whenever I think about our first surprise meal from the kids. They were much younger, so when one of them blurted out "Mummy and Daddy, we're gonna give you a surprise breakfast in bed for your anniversary tomorrow", I chuckled inside. I can't recall which one of them said this and which one responded with a "Don't tell them la, stoopid..!". It was probably Daniel who said it and Kelly that responded....Haha, talk about 'Big Mouths' then. At that time, I didn't give it much thought, let alone get excited over it. They knew they were forbidden to handle fire of any kind, so 'cooking' breakfast for us seemed more like a I'm pulling your leg kinda thing.

The next morning (which was a Saturday or Sunday) if I remember correctly, I heard these loud whispers - you know the type of pretentious whisper that is meant for you to wake up. When I opened my eyes, I saw these 2 cute angels standing by the side of our bed and said "SURPRISE,!!" Before I could get crossed at being awakened so suddenly, both disappeared out of our room and in a split second, walked in again with a tray. I could not believe my eyes and neither could Sunny. We were being served breakfast in bed! By two kids who barely knew how to tie their shoelaces.

Grinning wide, with some of their milk teeth missing, Kelly and Daniel held a tray with a dish towel covering the top of it and placed it down on a stool. We were asked to remove the cloth to see our 'surprise'...Walaa!! On a saucer, sat 4 cream crackers and 2 glasses of water. My heart just melted. Emotions overcame my being and I was so overwhelmed I wanted to cry, but thought better of it. That breakfast of cream crackers and water, was and is still the best breakfast I've ever had, because it was prepared with so much love, innocence and sincerity.

The tradition continues to this day. And no, we don't get served cream crackers no more. It's more sophisticated now.

So back to our 17th wedding anniversary... We were given the green light to come out of our rooms at about 8.30am. (Heck, imagine the sacrifices on Kelly's part - waking up early on a weekend!) The minute we opened the door, there were arrows that led us down all the way to the breakfast site - Table For Two by the Lake. Breakfast was wholesome! As with the title of this post, they served us and insisted that we have a romantic start to the day, rejecting our offer for them to join us. Eventually they gave in and we had a wonderful family breakfast outdoors, complimented with the peaceful sounds of my bamboo chimes which added to a sense of  'togetherness'.

After breakfast, 'Daddy' was told that he can't take 'Mummy' out to dinner because there was another surprise in store later that night. I was excited really, thinking about what they were up to this time. So, we had to leave the house at lunchtime, and again, Sunny was briefed that we could only appear at Honeyville at 6.30pm. NOT before! Strict instructions from the 2 little Chefs. Later, our curfew time was extended till 7.30pm.

And here's what greeted us as we drove home.

The pathway and outlines of the lake were lit with candles. They knew where to place my Jordanian lamps for maximum effect (glad to notice that they have good decor sense as well). Once again, it was 'Table For Two", outdoors at the Courtyard facing the Lake. And this time, they were adamant about not joining us for dinner. Bygosh, I was really impressed at the setup. A pity really, we were caught up in the atmosphere, that taking pictures of the romantic settings slipped our minds.

Our handphones were taken away and dinner was served. If it was English last year, they went Italian this time. Soft rolls, Bolognese (the sauce was magnificent) and chicken wings, roasted to perfection. That's not all. Daniel, our die-hard romantic son, made sure that romantic tunes were in the air. His creativity never fails to amuse me sometimes....Later, we discovered that these wonderful musical pieces were coming from his handphone, which he hid somewhere on his drinks counter. So it was just Sunny, me and music floating in the air....Every now and then, either one would come out and ask if we needed anything...

A wonderful closure to all these was a delicious chocolate cheesecake that Kelly made specially for the occasion. I had been craving for it a few days earlier.

To think that they did everything by themselves without a single help or 'how to' from me. Sunny and I are so blessed to have these 2. Sure they drive us up the wall at times, but this? Up to now, I still can't find the proper words to thank them enough, for their effort. While some teens their age couldn't give a damn about their parents, ours' meticulously planned a special evening for their folks. Attention to detail, there.

And may I add, it sure beats any 'Valentines Day' candlelight dinner whatsoever... The 'mood' was definitely there - great food, perfect ambiance, charming sexy music. In our household, Love exists everyday. I'm not gonna start to say how many times a day  I hear the "I Love You" being thrown around across the hall, dining, kitchen, and sometimes even in the washroom, no kidding. It's just there and we don't wait for that ONE day a year to express our feelings towards each other.

To Our Small Wonders,
You are absolutely wonderful, darlings. Thanks so much for making our Anniversary a memorable one. We still cannot get over the fact that you planned everything so well, by yourselves. Both of you are awesome in your own special way. Keep up the good work and thanks for making us your priority. Love you loads...

Having said that, some roast chicken wings would be nice now...
